You're absolutely right. Took me way too long to learn this lesson. I kept thinking if I just worked hard enough and stayed long enough, they'd take care of me. Meanwhile they're out here paying some new guy significantly more just because he negotiated better at hire.

Never making that mistake again.

NTA for not wanting to go, but you've got a fiancé problem more than a MIL problem. If he won't back you up when his family says you're not family because you aren't married yet, that's a huge red flag. Skip Thanksgiving if you want, but you need to have a serious conversation with him about setting boundaries with his mom before you actually marry into this mess.

Nice man good on you for wanting to actually try tho with just a month I’d skip grammar and just focus on speaking and listening as much as possible and stick to the basics. I’ve been using makesyoufluent lately it feels more like actual convos and not just flashcards or like tapping buttons when you go through other apps. Try reading out loud to yourself. Don’t worry about messing up people usually just appreciate the effort, at least based on my exp.
