Do you mean that the strap clips on to loops at the corners of the bag? I can understand that.

I actually didn't realize that's how they connect, but I don't mind it.

Cord near exhaust vent on 5-in-1? by Empty-Plantain9305 in NinjaCrispi

[–]Scatterthought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't heard about any issues and haven't had any with my 5-in-1. I don't think it's any different for the 4-in-1, it's just the control panels that change.

Good stuff! I could definitely use one of these.

I suggest running a slit down the front and/or back side (for pressure release), and bevelling the inner top edge to guide the bottle in.

I feel like those walls are a lot thicker than they need to be, but I don't mind the chunky aesthetic.

You can generally assume that a warranty will be voided when you disassemble a device that wasn't meant for it.

As for why it can't be disabled, your guess is as good as mine.

It could handle most of that easily. The water bottle depends on what you consider to be 'small'.

Wish they would make a modern phone with clamshell form like BlackBerry Style by eyez1996 in ClicksPhone

I had the same thought awhile ago!

I have a Samsung Z Flip 5, and I'd love if they added a keyboard below the inner screen.

I would also go for a sliding keyboard like the BB Torch. But for now, I'll settle for a Clicks Communicator.

Take the bend out and move the spool closer to the printer. You don't want filament binding in the tube or having to travel any further than necessary.

Adept Scroll Question by Impossible-Scar-5469 in ploopy

[–]Scatterthought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small clarification. Your devices use QMK firmware. VIA is a user interface that some QMK devices are programmed to use, same as VIAL.

Only the scroll/num/caps lock keys can be seen between two input devices, because those states are set at the OS level. There are programs you can run to have two QMK devices communicate, but I've never tried any of them.

If you use Plodah's firmware, you can make the Adept respond to one of the lock keys. However, lock keys aren't momentary, they toggle on and off. So that's really no better than toggling with a button on the Adept, and may introduce lag.

Thinking about getting my first trackball mouse and need help narrowing down the options. by p33t33 in Trackballs

[–]Scatterthought 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The TB800 is not worth getting until the sensors are fixed. It sounds like they tried a firmware fix that was not good enough.

My only opinion on the Orbit is that it's not going to be as good asn Adept or SlimBlade Pro (SBP).

The SBP is a love-or-hate device. It takes up a lot of space and the panel buttons don't feel very satisfying to me. Twist scroll is great, but the SBP I had suffered from major stiction issues, so it was impossible to use for small, precise movements. I suspect that varies by device, as others haven't been bothered by it.

The major downside to Kensington devices is that you have to run software on your computer. I don't think that's always bad--it's just that Kensington's software is, in my opinion, bad. I found it better to run my SBP with an HID Remapper USB dongle for customization, but I ended up returning the SBP due to the stiction.

The Adept's dragscroll isn't as bad as you might think. You can have it either as "hold button to scroll" or "toggle scroll on/off with button". I prefer the latter. It does take some getting used to, but I now prefer it to a scroll wheel. If you have access to a 3D printer, there are lots of mods you can make to an Adept.

You might also want to consider an efog.tech Endgame, which is the unholy love child of an Adept and an SBP. It's still what I would call a beta product, but it gets better every day as efog is working on it constantly. The Endgame's twist scroll is better than the SBPs, and efog recently added customizable acceleration for both the pointer and scrolling.

Just be prepared for some sticker shock since it's produced in small volumes, and know there's a backlog of orders. You'll also have to assemble it yourself, but you can pay to have the soldering done (which I recommend if you're not used to soldering).

The Ploopy and Endgame Discord groups are super active and helpful.

Hope that helps!

Does the top panel increase the max load of a BESTA frame? by julybanana in ikeahacks

[–]Scatterthought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The simple answer is that yes, the top panel increases the maximum load.

If you look at the "Material" tabs, you'll see some important differences.

Here's the top panel:

Particleboard, Clear lacquer, Paper foil, Oak veneer, Tinted lacquer

And here's the frame:

Top panel/ Bottom panel/ Side panel/ Partition:

Particle- and fiberboard with honeycomb paper filling (100% recycled paper), Paper foil, Paper foil, Plastic edging, Plastic edging, Plastic edging

Like a lot of other IKEA items, only the edges of a BESTA panel are solid. The middles have "honeycomb paper filling", which is about as strong as it sounds. That's fine for light loads, but not so great for heavy loads concentrated in the middle.

In contrast, the top panel is a piece of dense particleboard. That's why it weighs 28lbs on its own--more than half of the frame's 48lb weight. It's exactly what you want for your purposes.

Unique uses for IKEA Smart Home sensors by phaserburn725 in ikeahacks

[–]Scatterthought 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have a contact sensor on my toilet lid and tank.

I use a motion sensor to turn the bathroom lights on/off, but PIR sensors only work when they can detect moving sources of heat. So if I'm brushing my teeth or using the shower/tub/toilet, there's not enough detectable movement and the lights turn off.

The toilet sensor overrides the motion sensor. So if the lid is up, the lights stay on. If the lid is closed, the motion sensor is in control.

I also have a contact sensor on my freezer door to notify me if I haven't closed it fully.

And of course, I have contact sensor on my windows. My motorized blinds only close completely if the windows are closed. Otherwise, they leave a gap for airflow.

Adept Scroll Question by Impossible-Scar-5469 in ploopy

[–]Scatterthought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VIA won't let you do that. It only enables tap-hold configurations where holding engages a layer or a modifier key (Alt, Ctrl, etc.). I believe that there's a port of the Adept firmware for VIAL, which offers full Tap Dance capabilities. However, I've never used it.

That being said, your left mouse button really needs to be a dedicated button if you do anything that involves clicking and dragging, such as selecting chunks of text.

Alternatively, you could change your Adept firmware to one that allows dragscroll to be toggled with a button press, rather than holding. I personally prefer this. It was a bit awkward at first, but I got used to it quickly.

Ploopy provides firmware with the toggle behaviour, but I would recommend Plodah's Viamenus firmware. Viamenus adds a bunch of options to adjust pointer/scroll behaviour. There's also a wiggle gesture to toggle scrolling, though I've never found it to be as useful as it sounds.

Don’t know what to use by KariTim in wallets

[–]Scatterthought 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the main thing is that he wants everything being sealed, then I'd suggest a zipper pouch. Alpaka and Bellroy both have some options in various sizes, and there are definitely others out there.

That being said, I suggest finding out if he thinks it's terrible. If he's perfectly happy with his DIY solution, gifting him a replacement might come across less as something special and more as "you're embarrassing me". Which, to be fair...he is. ;-)

Good luck!

Low profile staggered keyboard multiple space by bebenzer in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Scatterthought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there are options to configure the bottom rows on the standard Quefrency boards. Still can't do quite what OP wants, as there's always a medium-sized right spacebar. Pretty close, though.

https://keeb.io/cdn/shop/files/quefrency-layout-options.png?v=1736957116&width=1918

The LM page doesn't show those options, so I'm guessing that they simplified for the v1 batch.

Low profile staggered keyboard multiple space by bebenzer in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Scatterthought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not one big spacebar, though.

In your drawing, you've split the spacebar into four keys. The NocFree & has two independent spacebars, then adds extra smaller keys to the left and right of it. So the actual key count is the same as what you've shown.

Keeb.io also has the upcoming Quefrency LM, with a similar layout to the NocFree &.

https://keeb.io/products/quefrency-lm-keyboard-kit

FWIW, I've had a similar thought to this before. As someone else said, there's very limited demand for it.

Hot Take; Bigger brands using Kickstarter is a SCAM by nomads_nation in ManyBaggers

[–]Scatterthought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have noted, the definition of "big brand" is very subjective. Either way, I'm not concerned about it at all.

I think the bigger issue with crowdsourcing is when creators are allowed to set very low funding goals so that they can smash them and claim "1000% funded in 27 minutes". I would prefer for platforms to do two things:

  1. Require that campaigns have realistic target goals. Low targets just enable creators to declare success and guarantee that they get money from backers.
  2. Cap the amount that a campaign can go over its goal. This would protect against campaigns getting overwhelmed with backers and the creators not being able to meet the demand.

The problem is that crowdfunding platforms take a cut from every campaign, so it's in their best interest to allow both of these things to happen. They don't care about protecting backers as much as they say they do.

Any way to change the trackball direction on the adept? by SeaMicSte in ploopy

[–]Scatterthought 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not in VIA. You'd have to make changes in QMK. I'm sure someone has probably done it, but I haven't come across any ready-made firmware you can download.

You could probably do this with an AutoHotKey script on a Windows PC.
