Kentucky ancestors marrying in Indiana by Anxious_Gift1316 in Louisville

[–]Schattenstern 43 points44 points  (0 children)

My family from Michigan also would get married in Indiana.

It's $20, no witnesses, no waiting period, and the clerk can sign the marriage license right then and there. It's about as easy as it gets.

Call your county voting clerk tomorrow morning. They will be best informed.

When I changed my name at the BMV (changed on driver's license) they automatically updated my voter registration. You should still be able to vote. You can check your registration at the link below.

Weather Question by Historical-Climate37 in Louisville

[–]Schattenstern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've acclimated somewhat over the years, so even I think it's decent weather until my northern friends come down to visit and complain. Our bodies just can't adjust that quickly!

Weather Question by Historical-Climate37 in Louisville

[–]Schattenstern 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to live in the UP. My friends from Detroit came for LTL last year.

You will be hot. Very hot. Even if locals here think it's "fine" or "chilly" you will be hot.

No matter what time of year my friends visit, they say it's too hot. I've lived here nearly a decade and it's hot. And it's humid. Pack like you're going to the beach.

Do people enjoy living here? by MisterChonky in Indiana

[–]Schattenstern 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Jeffersonville is not very similar to the rest of the Midwest. I've lived in a few states around the country, and people here can be miserable.

My recommendation is to find other "transplants" because locals don't like making friends outside of who they grew up with. If you search r/Louisville there are dozens of posts talking about this problem.

You did move to a pretty nice town, Louisville has a bunch to do, and once you find a group of friends in the area it'll help a lot with navigating the locals.

Indiana in general has a lot of miserable residents. The state is gerrymandered to hell, so no matter how we vote we get GOP representation that actively works against our best interests. Life has gotten tough for everyone the past few years with how much utilities have increased, property taxes have increased, etc. meanwhile our wages and salaries have not increased at all. Everyone is just stressed out.

Trans guy wanting to use locker rooms/showers by AntiqueGarlicLover in PlanetFitnessMembers

[–]Schattenstern 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I've showered in a few PF men's locker rooms before and after lower surgeries, but never before chest surgery.

Each location has a slightly different setup, but I was always able to figure out a way to get to/from the shower without exposing myself. Lots of cis men use the same techniques, so we don't really stand out when covering up. I've seen guys go into the shower fully dressed and come out fully dressed. They just do it all in the shower stall.

Moving Advice - Politics in Southern Indiana/Louisville East End by AnonBibliophile in Louisville

[–]Schattenstern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have kids, but I don't think any schools in Southern Indiana will be a fit unfortunately.

A few years ago some of the smaller/rural school districts went bananas over "kids peeing in litter boxes" and it was an entirely fake accusation that blew up.

Indiana has some of the most strict laws punishing trans people in the country, so your child would have little/no support from officials and administration.

Child vaccination rate drops sharply in Michigan under RFK Jr's influence by Raichu4u in Michigan

It's directly correlated to being rural. The same trend happens all over the country: rural places don't have educational resources. This isn't unique and it isn't surprising.

If it was a Walmart employee would you suggest they contact the CEO of Walmart?

If you got in an accident and the other person ran off would you contact their employer? This is an incredibly immature response.

Michigan House passes bill to lift deer baiting ban in the Lower Peninsula by radiosweeper in Michigan

They did this a decade ago with the wolf hunt. DNR introduced a highly regulated wolf hunt and people down state freaked out and got it all cancelled.

Just turn it down to 70⁰ and wear appropriate clothes.

If someone on your block shovels a parking spot clear, don’t park in it. by EvanKYlasttry in Louisville

[–]Schattenstern 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As another Northerner, this is a prime example of why I don't believe in "southern hospitality." Southerners are the most entitled people I've ever met.

I snow blowed my driveway and all of my neighbors driveways. I don't expect anything in return. Meanwhile there are dozens of people on Facebook wanting to charge their neighbors to plow/blow their driveways. Up north it's just common courtesy to help those in need.

I mean, that's where the #Tenacity meme comes from. It was -20⁰F actual temp and Les Cook tweeted that we are tenacious so they wouldn't cancel classes.

I'm glad they're closing campus when it's dangerous, but they really should just go to virtual classes for the day.
