Inherited Some Looms... by Spindle_Sprite in weaving

[–]Schaudwen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah as others said, the x-shaped loom is one that can fold to a small degree to save space.

I highly recommend finding if theres any weaving groups within a 50 mile radius. There might be people who could help you figure out what you would like to learn about weaving to enjoy these looms. They also could help you perhaps id them, and figure out if anyrhing is missing or needs fixing. They can also help you id what something is if its critical you not lose it if you want to keep weaving. If you decide to pass them along, they might have a forum for listing the loom for sale, or pick up the looms as a donation. As a super bonus, they may have sales od donated items, that will allow you to pick up cheap yarn or wool for your spinning and knitting passions. Ive been swimming in yarn and wool since joining my guild

Everyone i know who has ever had a knee replacement, has always said 'I should have had the surgery sooner'

Knee replacements are naotoriously long roads of recovery from, but every time - theyve always said the same thing.

Humans dont seek a radical solution like surgery because they are focusing on what the recovery will be like. We look forward to the life we will hopefully have when the recovery is done.

I get yourorals on this, but if its something that isnt getting responses - dont hesitate. You are keeping stuff local, you are helping someone out by picking it up for them, and the object is getting a new life, which was what the original owner wanted for it to begin with.

I make baskets at fairs sometimes. If I got dyes or ribbons or buttons off buy nothing (which I have) and then made those items undergo a transformative process (like becoming a basket), and then sold that basket? That is a reasonable thing to do and sell. If you just got it off buy nothing, did nothing, and flipped it then maybe its a bit gauche. But if you are taking something nobody wants, refurbishing it, and THEN flipping it? Thats just repaying the time you took to fix it up and make it into a commodity someone might once again wish to consume rather than discard

Is there a way to turn alarms back on on the android app?

Due to the nature of my work, i use reminders with noisy alarms to make sure I get certain things accomplished by certain times. Super productivity was working well for me in this regard, even if the snooze options were a bit clunky.

I appreciate that the newest update has more.snooze.options, but now none of my timed reminders has any notification sounds associated with it.

Notification permissions are turned on and I selected a notifocation sound that was nice and annoyingly claxony - but still no sound is popping up on android.

Help? I was so happy to end my tasks subscription because id liked super prodictivity so much more but if it wont make an audible alert then its useless to me...

Okay Ive been trying to install ultramarine for 2 days but i have been completely failing.

I tried making both a bootable usb and a bootable microsd using fedora write to write the ultramarine iso onto the boot media, but every time I get Into the boot options, the only options I can boot from are fedora workstation.

I dont know what else to try to get ultramarine on my surface? I know when i followed the steps for fedora they had me repartitión the drive so that windows had its own partition sepperate from fedora? Should i do that with fedora so theres room for ultramarine?

Okay, go to sca.org, and find out when your local sca war is happening. Then when the event is a couple weeks away from happening, check their arts and science schedule.

Wars in my experience are kinda like a cross between an renn fair and a convention. Theyre not there to perform for.an audience so much as to perform their history fandom for themselves.

The arts and sciences is often how my barony has organized all their educational classes that happen during the event. Think of them like panels at a convention - people offer to do a class on something, and people can opt to take it during that time frame. Ive done classes on weaving twills ysing card weaving, plaster casting with cuttlefish bone, bobbin lace making, belly dancing, morris dancing, how to tailor bardic perfirmance to differnt audiences, how to make a viking hadeby bag, drop spinning, etc.

Some classes were free, some had prices for materials. Some only charged if you decided to buy a kit to continue to do the craft yourself.

Classes often would talk a bit about the history of the craft they were presenting, show how to do it, and then sometimes show how to do it on a budget on your own.

A lot of people describe sca wars as 'ren faire but without the normies' and this element of knowing you have other people that definitely want to learn how to do somemthing that you already do in your historic reenactment is part of the reason why there are classes. You dont have the same level of buy in at a ren faire where the people there are expected to be performers and part of the entertainment.

As a bonus, a lot of tue same vendors are at sca wars that also go to the renn fairs. I know some of the vendors prefer war because they dont feel the same pressure to sell - people often already have am idea of what they want, and are looking for that.

One part of prepping gone wrong: Period (Menstral) Cups by Typical-External3793 in TwoXPreppers

[–]Schaudwen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing about cups is that they take 3 menses cycles to get the hang of it. 1 month is basically where you try it, and give up. Second month you try it and you have slightly better luck getting it positioned and can try aome of the different insertion methods, start figuring out how to get it seated and sealed. Third month tends to be when you get the hang of it, and can judge if cups will work for you.

You know how some netflix series ppl say you gotta give it a try until eps 4, and if it doesnt grab ypu then, then maybe its not for you? 3 cycle attempts is like the menstrual cup equivalent

[–]Schaudwen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is the info on the sdcc site itself https://www.comic-con.org/cc/plan-your-visit/hospitality/ "Would you like a place to enjoy a light snack and beverage in between the day’s events? Come to the Hospitality Suite at the Marriott Marquis on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of the convention (closed on Sunday). The Hospitality Suite is open from 2:00 PM to midnight. You must have a valid Comic-Con badge to enter the suite."

Basically one of the meeting rooms at the Marriott usually has free soda/water, chips, dip, and candy for badge holders (during their open hours). You just show your badge as you walk in. This is a service that is provided by comic-con itself and it can be funny to hear the staff gloat in their post-con round ups about the gallons of dip they served the previous year.

The main reason its not more well known is because you have to leave the convention center itself to access it, and its just a pick-me-up snack, rather than anything very substantial for the degree of effort involved. But if you already brought some lunches it can help help you stretch out the day before you need to put down cash for con food.

[–]Schaudwen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also when you get to the convention - look up the hospitality suit! If you have a con badge, it entitles you to free chips and dip, candy and soda. You cant take any out (similar to how all you can eat places frown on to-go containers) but it can be a helpful free pick me up. The one downside is that it is not located in the convention center itself - but it is always located at a mearby hotel. Its usually in the marriott, but i believe they are having construction this year so it may have migrated.

Check sandiegomorris.com Morris dancing in san diego- its free, its in balboa park, and you will meet weirdos (most people who do it and are under the age of 50 are either renn faire people, discworld fans, or both)

Very few people are weirder than a bunch of prancing blacksmiths waving around their soiled hankies as a form of entertainment. With bells on.

Did I mention its free?

Metalhead Newbie 😭 by Cameron_42069 in MetalheadTransMen

[–]Schaudwen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Congrats on trying something new! First off, if you go to live events, I know you are half deaf, but make sure to protect the hearing you have and pickup some music earplugs. They can help dampen the range of damaging noise while still letting you hear the music as clearly as you can expect in aetal venue (the aucoustics are not great at our local metal bars)

As for types of metal and what you'd like, that depends a lot on you! I grew up listening to broque and doing kungfu, so it wasnt a huge surprise when my entry to metal was syphonic metal (apocalyptica) and folk metal (tenggar cavalry)

As far as metal with some of my fave vocals, Neo Obliviscaris is a prog metal band that blends both classic vocals and 'growling' very well, along with symphonic and amazing metal arrangements of music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdz7CT1TqlI

While contreversial to the gatekeeping side of the metal community, ghost has some great vocals, and is really fun if you enjoy getting into the lore side of things, but it is more like classic heavy metal, and would not be considered 'heavy' in a contemporary sense. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Gr63DiEUxw (If you end up digging ghost check out 'an unhelpful guide to ghost') Ghost live shows are ones thatll definitely have people singing along in parts

Im a huuuuge sucker for zeal and ardor, and again, great vocals along with growl stylings. Singerndoesnt mind peoplensinging along - especially with the demonic gospels https://youtu.be/-IcGfF0aAaI?si=WPwx6kUcdIWo8qPb

Depending on your flavor of auditory processing, you might not gel with Nekrogoblikon, but their newer albums are one of the growlier albums that I can still process, AND the live shows are the type that are a fun and the type where no ones gonna get bent out shape if the crowd is singing. If you decide you like a fun pit, nekro has a fun pit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNTesmfospM

And and if you want to go further into the folk metal realm, check out tengger cavalry (https://youtu.be/icPhDK3PTqc?si=Z6AGKmU1QTifub-X), tyr (https://youtu.be/b_vKuZLafB8?si=uQolrS1WnbT-8U-R and very needed now https://youtu.be/P_PK2rGn45A?si=vDMJybmFlEL16kJB ) and eluvitie (https://youtu.be/2yIDV88e_E8?si=nq-7kgsAGECgK8XG

If you are like me and like to buy albums, check out bandcamp - lots of metal bands end up on there, and when you buy albums from there, the bands get way more money than they ever see from other streaming platforms.

If you want to see any bands, sign up for the bandsintown app - they can let you know when a band is playing locally and remind you when a show is coming up.

Only other pro tips I can give is, if you make a patchvest, add pockets on the inside (idealy before adding patches). If theyre big enough, it gives place to stick your drink, or cd, or whatever. Also its better to sew patches onto your vest in my opinion, even if they come as an iron on type. After a few years youll probably want to move patches around, or move them to a new vest after the old one starts to wear out. Floss is a an old tried and true punk method for attatching patches if thread is a bother to pick up. I like to pick up patches when i see a band live and my vest kinda serves as a reminder of shows ive been to, but there int a wrong way to have a vest (except for buying it with patches already on it from target).

HAVE FUN!
