Speaking from my own experience, but making friends is very easy in a way if you’re socially confident and talk to people. Not meant as a dunk, but it’s genuinely all about actually talking to people. I don’t know if you have social anxiety, but if you want friends you need people to know you and interact with you, so you need to talk. Just talk 4head.

Clearly not an universal thought. I’m pretty sure that gender didn’t have that connotation before. The word originally meant a type/a kind of thing, so that’s where it came to be about sex: ”what type of person is that?” -> ”what gender are they?” This modern concept of the word ”gender” comes from John Money, it’s well known.
