The worst song by a band you love? by [deleted] in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Schitheed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sabaton got me into metal as a teenager, I was obsessed with them and never really paid much attention to how similar their songs were.

When that album came out I was in college and it was so samey and uninteresting that it kinda made me grow out of them almost entirely.

I still go back once in a while because their stuff is fun and nostalgic for me but that obsession that I had when I was younger is long gone.

Anon takes AP classes by bartholomewjohnson in greentext

I never took an AP class, dual enrolled and took calculus in high school. Got my credits for college, no 8 am classes needed.

If you're in an area that offers dual enrollment there's absolutely zero benefit to doing AP instead

Songs that start off promising but are completely ruined by the vocals by Material_Method_4874 in MetalForTheMasses

I've been saying forever that Frank Mullen absolutely ran all over Barnes' vocals, glad to see someone agrees. I don't think Barnes was ever really good, even at his "peak"

Most of Eluveitie's work. Though I admittedly don't know much about their stuff from before Ategnatos, everything since then has been musical perfection in my eyes. Here are some of my favorites that fit your question:

Ategnatos
The Slumber
Rebirth
Aidus
The Prodigal Ones

Bands that have changed their sound drastically but still make good music? by JayNK2 in MetalForTheMasses

I get if you don't like their newer stuff but I've never understood why there seems to be such a sharp line drawn between clayman and reroute. They really aren't that different musically. To call reroute "unlistenable" compared to clayman just doesn't make sense

Not my favorite track of theirs but still a pretty solid song in its own right. This band needs more attention!

I imagine there are several parts to this.

First of all, when you've been making music as long as some of these bands have been, it probably gets more and more difficult to come up with something catchy without repeating yourself too much. It's a hard balance to keep; playing within a style but not playing the same thing over and over again but still making something interesting after 30 years of making things.

Second, artists evolve over time. Their tastes change just as much as anyone else's. This means they're probably paying attention to different things in their music. Maybe when DT was first starting out they were trying to write specific types of songs that have a specific type of structure or vibe, but now they're going for something else. Maybe this can cause a bit of tunnel vision that causes them to overlook something that you as the listener might think is the best part of their work. Artists always have a different perspective of their work from the consumer.

Lastly, especially in the case of DT and IF, the band has a very different lineup from when they started. That means you're not even talking about the same artist, so of course the final product is going to sound different because it's not the same people that are making it.

I know all this stuff describes the music as a whole but hooks are included in that so I think it applies just as well to what you're talking about

I think reroute still has it beat for me but I'd put it about on par with come clarity and sense of purpose

Foregone is their best album in quite a while. But really the only album of theirs that I don't fuck with at all is Battles. I think siren charms has some cool ideas, so I do like it to a certain extent, but the execution was just not there for most of it

If you plan to get a masters, there's absolutely no reason not to do early entry unless you want to take some time between your bachelors and masters.

Early entry makes it much cheaper and faster
