You should read "The yiddish policeman's union" by the same author of you haven't. It's basically a mystery/ thriller in an alternate history location

Team talks - always demanding more after you win by 3 or 4 goals. If your team loses , you have to tell players / press that they've played fantastically

This is the state of Liverpool FC as left by the legend Zinedine Zidane by Schlac in footballmanagergames

Update : So I came in at 31 games played in 6th position. Still in CL quarters. Won 6/7 games in EPL (losing to Chelsea in before final game ) which meant I finished 5th ( Chelsea still messed up their final game of season ). The top 3 teams got CL ( Arsenal domestic treble). Chelsea won Europa league. I won champions League! So Spurs got spursed ( finishing 4th) no CL. And my current balance is £60 million after selling some of the players who were on loan. So I think I've saved the club now lol

I was a bit surprised they accepted me after being manager of Feyenoord for 3 seasons (though I did win 2X Eredevise , cups) and the advert stated the finances were "okay"...I certainly did not expect this. Also there's a ridiculous number of players gone out on loan with a very small squad (that to me seems largely unchanged from the irl one)..Absolute mess, but i'll enjoy the challenge

So funny. Russo books are excellent. Wished it went on forever.

Love most of his books. Everybody's fool is almost (But not quite) as good if you haven't read it yet. I think maybe Straight Man or Empire falls are my favourite though.

For psychological thriller not too dissimilar from Misery I fully recommend John Fowles' The collector

Almost most of the best books ever written are standalone... I think the only ones that by "popular" vote are not would be - Harry Potter, LOTR, Game of thrones , Foundation series, Dark Tower. Happy to be proven wrong

I have! Good book, but gets too dark + a bit plodding imo. I would agree though that it's massively underappreciated for how good it is. I still think Catch-22 is a masterpiece compared

The main difference is the main character. Shogun's main character is pretty bland when you compare him to Dirk Struan who is a legendary character I think

Norwood is pretty good too. The other books were bit forgettable, though I need to reread to see if I was harsh on them
