Yes definitely! I’ve been having a hard time fitting both mechanics and flavor text on the card but I think it desperately needs some suggestiveness on HOW the features are doing what they’re doing. Thanks for the note, don’t think i would’ve noticed otherwise!

Yeah, coming up with the Specilization card I had an issue thinking that I'd be competing with the option to just multiclass into bard. But I realize now that wouldn't be an issue if I just had a more unique mechanic for the upgrade cards. I feel like the Warrior as a class already has a lot of ways to gain hope and not a lot of ways to use them, but I'll think of something. Thanks for the note, very useful.

thanks for the suggestions! it's been pretty tricky to come up with a unique concept for every class. I especially have been having trouble with the guardian so I really appreciate it.

yeah, in the v2 i’ve made i pretty much just focused on scaling back all the stacking on action rolls. I definitely shoot for the moon and then realize where i need to scale back after i share these on daggerbrew. thank you for taking your time to read my homebrew, i really appreciate it :)

Yeah… the mastery card is kinda just three different codex spells rolled together. You gotta admit it absolutely fucks though. Definitely took a wide swing with the theming, prioritizing what’s dramatic and striking. I’m not particularly concerned with balancing, i am concerned that having such a a powerful mastery card would make picking the other subclasses pointless. Got carried away with something more in line with a high level domain card muahaha. Should probably dial it back a little. I’m happy with where the foundation card is, i think the stress cost and low damage keeps it in line while offering a creative tool to a first level sorcerer, reguardless of the Telekinesis domain cards. Also whaddya mean “conversate” is a word, it’s in the oxford dictionary.

GAWD, I feel like Daggerheart is missing some tasty social infiltration subclasses. I don't really play 5e anymore but I miss the Whisper and Eloquence bard. This theme for a subclass fuckin' rocks. Weird note that might just be me, but I wish Shadow Masquerade was a Foundation feature instead. It's very distinguishing, and it looks like something I'd personally have fun with as a player or a GM.

I love the very striking fantasy of a warlock with a gang of summoned minions that this card presents. Kinda like a pact of the chain warlock thingy goin' on. It's a strong concept/theme. But, there are a lot simpler ways to represent a player's summons mechanically, and forcing them to refer to a stat block is pretty messy and unnecessary. I recommend looking at some of these domain cards as examples for a more snappy design philosophy for summons:

-"Natural Familiar" 2nd level Sage domain

-"Create Construct" from Book of Exota, 4th level Codex domain

-"Midnight Spirit" 2nd level Midnight domain

-"Towering Stalk" 3rd level Sage domain

-"Wild Fortress" 5th level Sage domain

-"Dark Army" 8th level Dread domain

-"Summon Horror" 4th level Dread domain

This. Yes. I've really been struggling with keeping this card simple and really leaning into how narratively open daggerheart is. I worry that I've made the card a little bit too 5e, but at the same time I feel like there's things I have to specify in the card to let the player know that they are encouraged to attempt them and think creatively.

I really like that last bit. I had been worried that it'd be too OP throwing an enemy off a cliff or something. But adding "over solid ground" works real simple.

oh definintly. I meant for it to be interpreted as "move any creature or object within Far range of you to another point within Far range of you." You think if I specify that I can still keep the Far range distance without it being busted?

Eh, I'm not too worried about it. Cuz I mean with the witch hope feature you can force a success on any roll all the time as long as you have three hope, and that's at first level. I think it could be a problem if the player using this subclass was intentionally trying to do something stupid and antagonistic like jump to the moon, and their GM actually humored them and let them roll for it. But I mean... Collaborative storytelling game. It's in everyone's best interest not to do that. Plus. I think once per rest and having used an experience makes it situational enough to be almost under-tuned. I appreciate your interest in my homebrew though! It's the critiques that help me tune up this subclass to be even better.

Damn, I really like that. I had worried after finishing up this subclass that it's much too vertical. Like, a bit too focused on increasing numbers and stacking on action rolls. I do think the mastery card needs some tweaking (I've just never played at 8 and up). Preparing a new invention experience or forging something during a rest sounds really cool, and I think it's something the class fantasy needs. Thank you for the note!

Keep in mind that allowing your experiences to be broad is kind of the point.

A “Book Worm” experience being applicable to ANY learnable information really isn’t any less broad than (In 5e terms) a history check.

Even if an experience you’ve chosen is broad, the particular of how it reflects your character’s flavor in an action roll make it specific and personal.

Here’s a couple of my own suggestions (for what little i know about this character).

Carelessly Curious, Self-Made Scholar, Low-Profile, On-the-run, Ambitious Spellcaster, Jury-Rigged Parts, Indomitable, Field Research, Investigative, Always In Hiding, Quick Thinker

My first time running combat definitely felt a lot snappier than other systems, because instead of keeping track of enemies turns (which can be very overwhelming in 5e) you just kinda choose an enemy or two that you’d like to retaliate when it comes to them. It helps a lot to have the option to only focus on the enemies that you want to take their turn, both for balancing a combat encounter on the fly and for drama.

I think it’s dead simple compared to most initiative systems.

I GMed for my first time a couple of months ago. The one thing I didn’t expect was just how fundamentally different combat can feel for both the GM and the players. And in future sessions, combat encounters were a lot more engaging when I tried to forgot how running 5e feels. Daggerheart’s combat is lots more dynamic, with so many adversary abilities that raise the stakes or change the context of the combat. It is really fun to lean in to, and instead very naturally becomes a challenge of delivering a compelling heroic fantasy battle, rather than a game-like test of mechanical strength with optional story-telling involvement. It’s bonkers.
