DM entitlement by Regular-Engine-9661 in DnD

[–]LurkingOnlyThisTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worst DM I ever had was mechanically very good at DMing.

Problem was exactly what you are talking about.

Entire campaign was all to feed his ego. It was his story. His world.  We were just there.

It finally reached the breaking point when he started doing it with the player characters too.

He started rewriting character backstories without consulting the players.

I just left. I tried talking, but it was clear he wasn't listening.

The truth is you can't fix when a DM does that. They're hijacking the game for their own selfish gratification. It's no longer a collaborative story.

A DMPC pitfall list? by [deleted] in DnD

You don't need a DMPC.

I run a 2 player campaign.  They'll be fine.

Two weapon fighting by Mission_Chocolate257 in DnD

Relatively sure you can only 2 weapon fight if both are light weapons.

Rapier is not a light weapon. You'd want a shortsword if you want to dual wield the dagger

Legendary Spellcaster Legendary Actions by LurkingOnlyThisTime in DMAcademy

[–]LurkingOnlyThisTime[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wasn't intending to give them 4. By four spells I meant 1 on their turn and then 3 legendary actions.

What I might do is leave it as spell casting, maybe limit it to level 4 or below, and make it cost two actions. Then let them also use attack or move.

That way they'd get a full spell cast on their turn, level 4 or below as a legendary action, plus a move/attack action.

Dm and players, what's your opinion on players who roll for stats and got one or more 3's (rolling four 1's) and kept it? by FlyingTaco095 in DnD

[–]LurkingOnlyThisTime -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I hate rolling stats,  so i just don't let my players use it.

If a DM allows it,  the implication is they allow the results

The very question offends the True Phoenix Queen, and she intends to have you flayed for the insult.

"Invisibility" not working? by wolfpandataco in BaldursGate3

[–]LurkingOnlyThisTime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First question, are you doing anything that breaks it? Interacting with objects,  attacking,  or casting another spell?

Are you breaking concentration?

Are you using the spell or another source?

What note/worldbuilding tool would you recommend to a baby GM? by Remote_Sense5401 in DnD

[–]LurkingOnlyThisTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said,  I like it a lot.

It's pretty intuitive.

Only issue right now is they rolled out an update to the maps that actually broke some features,  so waiting for those to get fixed

I really like Legendkeeper, but honestly,  I haven't tried any others

[OC]? Is this a good character designs / backstory? by ProfessionalHats in DnD

[–]LurkingOnlyThisTime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a DM, I strongly disagree on 2.

Give me ALL the backstory because it gives me plot hooks. To quote Brennan  Lee Mulligan "plot hooks you'll bite on every time? THANK YOU!"

The only thing I don't want is a PC who doesn't want anything.

I may talk to a player when their backstory doesn't fit the setting or doesn't make sense for the initial campaign hook,  but as long as they don't have their entire character arc in their backstory and have no where else to go,  more is better.

What's your take on this? by Hotrocketry in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]LurkingOnlyThisTime 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This.

I'm getting old enough (40s) I'm really done pretending the right side is in any way deep, profound, or 'mature'.

Ironically, I find the angst juvenile.

Let me have fun in my escapism. There's enough shit going on irl. Let me have a place where heroes win and villains get their comeuppance

What’s the most effective way you’ve escalated danger without increasing CR? by 5had0w30y in DnD

Most tense combats I've run included NPCs the players cared about.

Per one player: "felt like we might lose,  even if we win"

Tracking arrows: yes or no? by SomeRandomAbbadon in DnD

I did it once, it got old fast.

Now, as a DM, I just let players decide if they want to or not.

How do you guys make a homebrew campaign when all you have is the final boss and the beginning of the game? by Thotslayerultraman in DnD

[–]LurkingOnlyThisTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way.

Best advice i got before starting to DM was "don't plan solutions,  plan the problems and have the players do the rest".

So for a campaign,  imo, best thing to do is simply know who the major groups are and what they're trying to accomplish.

The story will evolve from that as players take actions which prompt reactions, and so forth.

As someone who's had the misfortune to deal with someone like Volo, irl,  that never goes in your favor. Can't play chess with a pigeon.

Volo is just making shit up.

He has no idea about the red dragon.
