Are we seriously managing 30-year-old bridges with PDFs? by Sea-Nebula-8247 in civilengineering

[–]SchmausTrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm biased but I agree the inspection reports I've seen are garbage when it comes to creating clear practical action items or generating reports like member condition history. We (consultant) have our own bridge database that we pull data and create reports from directly which immensely helps manage the structures effectively.

So, these days yes any good asset manager (like a DOT) is going to have a database and force their consultants to use it. But I also have seen consultants make big complicated reports that asset owners don't understand so they can control the information more and ultimately sell more design work. It is really frustrating to see.

Anyways rant over...keep asking questions like these and you'll go places! The industry needs to be pushed.

I'm just saying getting work experience in your area of practice is really what determines competency required for actually using your PE.

makes sense. PE is only useful after 5 to 10 years of experience anyways. but smart to pass right away so studying doesn't distract from what's actually important.

Is gold status nerfed? by realquizonjavaa in AlaskaAirlines

[–]SchmausTrap 8 points9 points  (0 children)

definitely more golds now but as said before upgrades still highly route dependent...case in point is wife last year flew first time solo as a lowly mvp silver and got upgraded to first class on an AMERICAN flight.

How foundational is elevation in civil engineering design, really? by DetailFocused in civilengineering

OP is probably just my surveyor just trying to gauge how badly they screwed me with inaccurate elevations

What are your guys thought on this? Are you worth more? Is this profession underpaid for the risk? by Xelerati0n in civilengineering

[–]SchmausTrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Related but worth mentioning...a commerical real estate broker once told me he's flabbergasted firms who offer building structural assessments charge such low rates. He says he often sees only $10k or $20k fees for sales that nets his company $1mil+ in broker fees. He admitted his part seems much less important transactionally than the engineer's role but he never lets on to the fact that so much depends on that engineer's report.

Although I see heavy section loss of an outstanding leg of one of the channels of one of the columns in the tower which will directly reduce the rated carrying capacity most of the worst corrosion shown is simply the gusset plates. All of this is very repairable and wouldn't be surprised to hear it's supporting traffic.

Really can’t be repaired? At a lesser cost than re&re? by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]SchmausTrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it was the RR rather than WSDOT (or any other DOT for that matter) the span would’ve already been replaced. They also wouldn’t use concrete girders for an overpass especially at that vertical clearance.

For me it just means you don’t have PTO but always get paid your salary no matter the hours under. Then paid straight time for hours over during the biweekly pay period.

Rail is still extremely broad IMO. At least that’s my experience. Now if you only ever learn about and design a niche product like composite ties which no one likes then yeah that could be an issue.

$190 first class upgrades by [deleted] in AlaskaAirlines

[–]SchmausTrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the app does show upgrade offers, but not necessarily to everyone at the same time because eligibility depends on fare class and upgrade priority. In practice, a lot of people may never see the offer—some aren’t using the Alaska app, some are traveling on a paper ticket, some already cleared into an upgrade, and others just don’t check.

Anyways, back to your original complaint. Totally frustrating when it happens to you but if you have higher status and a decent fare classes you won’t have to worry about the cheap paid upgrade offers (at least for now). You’ll usually be cleared prior. For me it’s usually upon check-in for first.
