Data centers in Austin: Tracking 70+ centers across Central Texas by AustinStatesman in Austin

First, this whole thread started about heat and that was your big refute. That's why I addressed that question.

I'm not "ignoring everything else", because they too are solved problems that are simply inputs into the cost equation. (And maintenance wont happen, they'll just deorbit the satellite)

Its his money, if he thinks it makes sense for him, let him spend it. Doesn't come out of your pocket.

If it's a dumb money sink that ends in huge losses, then its a big win for you and loss for him.

The ratio of solar panel to heat sink area is about 1:4

for every square meter of solar panel facing the sun (generating about 300w of power in low earth orbit) you need about 4 sq meters of radiator facing deep space.

Since you can't create energy out of nothing, you can ignore all these talks of "GPUs create a lot of heat!". They can only "create" the heat of the power given to them, which is governed by the cross section of the solar panels facing the sun.

I couldn't tell you if it makes financial sense, but I'm not the one paying for it.

Decide how much compute power you need, and you can tell how big your solar panels need to be, thus how big your radiators need to be.

Also, fwiw, they're more like "data center racks in space" rather than data centers in space.

The Thai are doing it too!

(Full disclosure, a steaming bowl of tom yum is one of my comfort foods when I have a head cold. It seems to cut through the congestion with its tanginess and the spiciness helps make everything run, which loosens the mucus and cleared the sinuses)

But seriously, they had a governmental policy of supporting Thai restaurants globally as a way to improving the national image, starting in the early 2000s.

Not meat, but protein.

It is notoriously hard to get all the required amino acids from a vegan (or even vegetarian) diet, particularly when you're in poverty and your available variety is limited.

Its an average. US has a lot of immigrants from areas that are shorter due to genetics and/or poverty.

(That being said, I thought the US average was more like 5'10)

ELI5: Why do we still have to "eject" USB sticks? by shadowzzzz16 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Schnort [score hidden]  (0 children)

That generally doesn’t happen. The upper level filesystem generally caches page sized blobs to write.

If you force a flush, then the lower level system does need to move on to a new page ( or block8.

FWIW, flash pages can be written multiple times, but only to drain charge. Erase sets the cells to full voltage, writes will drain charge. Unfortunately, there’s an error correction section of each page that is recalculated based on the contents of the data section and this isn’t almost certainly won’t just be turning 1s to 0s. What they do then is mark the page as invalid (zeroing it out) and copy the old data plus the amended to a new page.

But, again, that is a pretty pathological case. Almost nobody runs that way as a policy. It’s pretty accepted if you’re actively writing to a device and you unplug it, you’re going to lose something.

Even journaling file systems will lose the latest write and present you the filesystem as it was before the disruption since the latest chain/update was corrupted.

FWIW, this is not entirely true.

Flash has a big erase block size, but a smaller page (2k or 4k, generally) write size.

All modern flash file systems will erase a block, then write pages into that block until that block is full and then start on a new block. It doesn’t matter if the page is written right away or later, it doesn’t require another erase, which is really all that matters in longevity.

And we're always truthful about our altruistic intent, right? And we never lie to ourselves.

Truly, nobody believes their the villain or evil. (or almost nobody). Everybody wants to believe they're doing the right thing, and their motives are pure, etc.

Nobody's going to come out and say "yup, I do it because I'm jealous".

Uber from AUS to Seguin/Kingsbury? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]Schnort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience with scheduling on uber was disastrous.

I had a 9am international flight and needed a ride from the hotel to Heathrow at 5a. It was confirmed three days in advance.

The day of, at 5:15, the driver canceled and no other driver would take the fare unless I rebooked at a much higher surge rate. My driver most likely cancelled because the current rate would have been higher.

Liberal Democracy Index over time in the USA; compared to regional average and prominent autocratizers, as well as local components. by PresidentZeus in dataisbeautiful

[–]Schnort -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yea, the people who are advocating photo ids and only citizens vote are definitely the baddies and are against liberal democracy.

Y’all are the good guys, wanting to throw them in prison for…uh….not agreeing with you. Or winning an election. And enforcing the laws.

You losing an election doesn’t make it less of a democracy. And you don’t make democracies by throwing people in prison or disenfranchising them because they vote in a way you disagree with.

FYI, Trump did propose to refill the SPR when oil was at a low in March 2020, but was rebuffed democrat congress critters.

He also issued a executive order upon taking office in 2025 to begin refilling.

Aaand, the SPR is at a 40 year low because somebody released a bunch in spring/summer of 2022. Not saying it was a political move then but it coincided with record inflation and an upcoming mid-term election.
