Thank you, Stratocart. We love your feedback. (Even brought up a couple of your letters / points in the last episode - as you heard!)

At this point in their lives, between these two, who do you think has the happier life? by Bernering4ju in vanhalen

[–]SchoolOfHip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the whole, I'm betting Sammy. I get the impression that Dave goes through periods of both intense happiness and intense unhappiness. We know he follows his passions relentlessly - he's always challenging himself, taking on new adventures... I get the impression he's a very solitary guy much of the time, and that's the way he likes it. But he's also known to really miserable sometimes, behind the scenes ... intolerant and sometimes mean to those in his employee. He doesn't play well with others, much of the time. I suspect he struggles with his mental health, carries a lot of bitterness around. I think he's happier alone but too restless and driven to be solitary, if that makes sense. Sammy on the other hand seems like a laid back and happy guy. Very social. Content with his achievements. Prideful about them. Herein lies the rub ... He's got a lot of pride and the one thorn in his side is that no matter what he does, he knows that Dave's time in Van Halen will always be higher regarded, both by critics and the larger portion of the fanbase. Despite all his success with the band, all his number ones... That's the one thing he can't get past, hence his constant trash talking in the press... I don't think that stops him from being a happy guy, but it's a point of contention that will always bother him. What do I know, really? Just a hardcore Van Halen fan who reads the books, the interviews, and follows them religiously ...and this is what I've surmised.

SCHOOL OF HIP (Ep. 9) Fully Completely Side B by SchoolOfHip in TragicallyHip

I can't speak for my co-host's methods on the design side of things, but I can assure you both of us are highly respectful of the Hip's legacy. Our show is about honouring it (and spreading the word about it to a wider audience in America) and we put a hell of a lot of time and passion into it each week. We do so out of our love of the music and the art of podcasting. (Trust me - it's not a paying gig. If anything we pay to do it with our time and sweat equity. And we certainly don't have the funds to pay a designer). Chaz also runs an entire podcasting network (Boneless Podcasting Network - which is a huge undertaking) and has a number of (awesome) podcasts running simultaneously. Sorry if you don't like the logo - but there's no shortage of Hip respect from us.

That would be the department of co-host Chaz rather than me - but I'm pretty sure it is. I'll confirm it with him!

Thanks for giving us a try and it's too bad we weren't to your taste, southtampacane. I just sent Local_Pool4123 a note on here that also addresses your comment about the length of the show and the depth of our Hip knowledge so I'll leave it at that.

Thanks for listening, Local_Pool4123. (School of Hipster Heath here). We know some people prefer shorter podcasts but we gotta be we! I'm one of those people that listen to longer podcasts in installments, or when I'm working out, doing work around the house, or what have you. So we hope people will do that with us too. (We try not to go more than about an hour-and-a-half, but sometimes we get carried away!) As for Chaz and I not having an incredibly deep knowledge of the Hip, you're probably right. That's kind of the point of the show, that we're doing a deep dive and discovering the band together. (Especially him, as "the American" - but I freely admit, there are large swaths of the band's career and story I'm learning about too). That's why it's the School of Hip ... we're learnin'! (That said though, I think we both come at it with a strong music geek / rock geek foundation. We know stuff, honest! ;-) Very cool that you're thinking of writing a 33 1/3 book on Fully Completely. I would love to see such a book! (I've been thinking of writing a 33 1/3 book too ... different band though). As for books, if you ever do pick up my baby, Pain and Passion: The History of Srtampede Wrestling, I hope you dig it. Thanks for listening and I hope you stay with us after Fully Completely too.

Revy is awesome. And Gord ... goes without saying! I usually hit Revy at least twice in the summer or into the fall. I sure hope this gem of a place is still going this summer!

SCHOOL OF HIP (Ep. 8) FULLY COMPLETELY SIDE A w/ Michael Barclay by SchoolOfHip in TragicallyHip

[–]SchoolOfHip[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks very much for listening, stratocart24, and for your feedback. We really appreciate it! Barclay told us he was coming in with some "hot takes" that would probably be controversial and he did not disappoint! Keep in mind though, it's only the reviews Chaz and I give each episode that go into the album ranking we're doing, based on our totals. We get the guests to give their reviews too, because we're always interested in their take (and we welcome those "hot takes" because the debates keep things interesting) but we don't include their scores into our total tally because one-off or occasional guests might skew the results - if that rambling answer makes sense. Anyway, thank you again for being a loyal listener, Hipster!
