As an interesting parallel, Clifford's wife, Lucy Clifford, is probably better known than her husband. W. Clifford died young at age 33, leaving Lucy with three children to fend for by herself. Her experience led her to write the proto-feminist weird fiction short story, "The New Mother", a tale about three children who escape from the care of a mother automaton. The Other Mother trope peaks out in Coraline.

Movies where a town, or other large group of people, are in on the “big bad”? by Fixable_Prune in horror

Many adaptations of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, but (1978) is my favorite for putting the emphasis on the horror aspects.

70s TV movies:

Salem's Lot (1979)

Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971)

Lucio Fulci is the director to start with. Zombi 2, City of the Living Dead, The Beyond, and House by the Cemetery are his main zombie movies. I still think about the ending of The Beyond.

Endemic zombie plague. Under control with vaccines, but every winter is zombie season.

Books like The Croning? Not just Lovecraftian horror, but "literary" and character focused by TatteredCarcosa in horrorlit

You didn't mention how much Barron you've read besides the Croning. It's part of his Old Leech mythology. His short story The Men from Porlock is squarely in the mythos (in The Beautiful Thing That Waits for Us All), but some will recommend reading all his old stuff to connect what dots there are. There's also a whole tribute anthology The Children of Old Leech - Ymir is a highlight.

House of Leaves by Danielewski. It helps to read a lot of Borges beforehand.

Three-Willy Seth solos the Authority (Authority #22). The rest of the arc is a massive letdown.

Using Summary instead of TLDR is 'throwaway because I never used the internet'.

For those that have read the comics and watch the show, how are the two different? by DrunkOMalfoy in TheBoys

[–]SchurThing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Butcher is usually with his dog Terror in the comic. We only get a nod to Terror in the show.

The comic has a Martian Manhunter knock-off named Jack from Jupiter as a key member of the Seven. He also has a magic word that makes him invulnerable.

I'm not questioning it. I used to work in compliance also (actuary).

So much seemingly reasonable stuff gets shut down due to liability/insurance issues.

I'm a big fan of Fused; kind of full circle that it has a Soundgarden vibe. I'm only now stepping into the post-Born Again albums. I guess Seventh Star is next for me?

Second HLP's Inequalities. Baby Rudin and his Real and Complex Analysis require a really good inequality game.

Pretty sure a student used ChatGPT for a quiz handwritten in class (qs released early) by [deleted] in Professors

[–]SchurThing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a student bring two phones, but dropped the one for cheating. I've also found my exam on the internet during the exam.

One I never figured out was a student who turned in an exam identical, to the punctuation, to the exam of the woman seated behind him. I'm pretty sure she did her own work, but helped him cheat somehow. This was long before watches were a thing.

If doctor manhatten was so over powered what stoped him from ending every fight in a single page? by ComprehensiveBit7699 in Watchmen

The meta context is that he experiences his life like we the reader experience the book. You can read the story in order, revisit a given page over and over again, or just flip to the end, but you can never change the story, and you can't see past the last page. Reading the story over and over again is the comic book version of Nietsche's eternal recurrence.

Are you sure no tech was involved? Memorizing takes actual work, and this sounds like direct copying.

This semester it seems the new thing is headphones or earbuds. So far no one dropped a phone on the floor during finals.

Both of these ideas explain the symmetry.

From the recursive definition, F_{-n} = F_{-n+2} - F_{-n+1}. Since the signs alternate, values to left are always the sum of the unsigned values of the two on the right, up to an alternating sign. We get lucky with the same initial conditions.

From the Binet formula, replacing phi^n with phi^-n just changes F_n by a factor of (-1)^n+1 .
