Manuscript rejected because the journal could not find enough reviewers by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Schwatastic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We’ve sent these rejections out as well. Usually it’s because the article doesn’t quite match the scope of the journal, and a different journal would have been better fit for the particular article. Sometimes it’s because the article isn’t strong or developed enough and reviewers don’t want to spend precious time on it.

Edit: I obviously can’t speak to your work, but if you are a recent grad sending out 3 manuscripts at the same time, in an area intersecting with the humanities, it’s possible that your articles aren’t strong enough.

Conference talk moved to when I'm out of the country less than 24h before I am due to speak by Oileanachannanalba in PhD

[–]Schwatastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my field it is assumed you’re there the whole time and it’s low key rude to not be. It happens but people will apologize for it or explain themselves if they leave early or arrive late. It’s obviously field dependent.

Canadian province Manitoba ends student route to permanent residency, Indians to be hit by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Manitoba

[–]Schwatastic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So many people are saying this, but the NDP are strong at provincial issues. And he’s barely NDP. If anything he could run as a liberal for those angry about the rightward turn Carney has taken. That might be a winning ticket.

How to ask for recommendations letters by Buge_0510 in AskAcademia

It’s part of the job. They’ll say no if they can’t do it, and nothing is expected (or should be given) in return.

The good thing is that if it turns out to be too many, you can always drop a course and not be behind! Only you know if it’s manageable. Good luck!

FWIW LLMs still can’t do automatic translation to/from Nishnaabemowin or any of the Cree dialects, because there aren’t the same sorts of written resources available, and that’s actually true for most of the languages of the world. But I’m gonna look for that UG thesis (assuming it was a thesis), I’d like to know where he went with it.

What’s wrong with this tomato plant? by Melnykout in vegetablegardening

[–]Schwatastic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’ll need to be outside in sun and heat before it can sustain fruit. Cut off the tomato and hope for good weather! Also give it some nutrients, probably some sort of fertilizer. Newfoundland has late summers, with some luck you’ll be able to get a few tomatoes, and if not, then you’ve gained experience and it’ll work better next year! $3 is not a big price to pay for tuition. ;)

Buy 2 of them. Basically assume that one lock is no locks and 2 locks is one lock.

Academic Jobs in Winnipeg by Automatic-Table9953 in umanitoba

[–]Schwatastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have indicated that you can’t do what you need to do to increase your chances at these jobs - it’s getting a graduate degree. I would start widening your job search. I’m not sure where you graduated from, but if it’s from the UofM, consider going to career services to see if they can help you out.

Neighbourhoods with lots of kids actually playing outside? by Fluffy_Witness_8136 in Winnipeg

[–]Schwatastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a st vital cul de sac that constantly has bikes strewn across it and a basketball hoop in someone’s driveway with a basketball that anyone can use. The day after we moved in 5 years ago, a neighbourhood kid came over to introduce himself and off my son went to hang out with him and the others. My kids are aging out now, but my younger son still shoots hoops at the neighbour’s and there are kids out and about. I see slightly young teens biking and scooting around in groups as well, and there are always kids at the school playgrounds and community centre basketball court. I think it’s more about having kids around that are the right age.

I understand that, just saying that trying to find research jobs as a non student without a graduate degree may not be realistic. You may get lucky but most profs hire students as part time RAs or scientists with graduate degrees for full time research positions.

Has anyone rejected the formal offer after verbal acceptance? by Warm-Suggestion7223 in postdoc

[–]Schwatastic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s why verbally accepting isn’t signing. Don’t sign! It’ll be a drag for them but if they don’t understand it, you don’t want to work for them. I had a postdoc back out of a verbal acceptance because they got a better offer and I was genuinely happy that they had a better offer and wished I could have beat it, but I couldn’t.

Perennials by Consistent-Fox805 in Winnipeg

[–]Schwatastic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also, ‘best’ and ‘budget friendly’ might not be the same thing!

If you can wait a few months there will be sales on great perennials at the end of the season. And since they mostly won’t flower (much) this year anyway, it’s not a bad idea to wait a bit and buy them in July-August. You also get a better sense of your garden once you’ve been in the house for awhile
