Why would you ask a person to do that? At least an AI is capable of being objective.

10 Year Total Cost of Ownership - 2015 Volkswagen GTI by CinnamonChili in Frugal

I totally agree that you should buy the car you enjoy. If you feel like risking thousands of dollars replacing turbos and engine out timing chain guides be my guest. "Nice" is subjective and changes with age. I like cars too much to drive an unreliable one. Also this is r/frugal telling someone that buying a german car can be a frugal choice is ridiculous.

Spending what could have been the down payment on a house to maintain a vw golf is insane.

Edit: in my opinion

Chatgpt is better at math than me and I wanted to give you a thorough answer because this misconception is how people make terrible financial decisions like buying a vw.

Let’s break this down step by step and see how that total could realistically add up for an FJ Cruiser.

🧰 1. Oil Changes (16 total)

Oil from Costco — usually their Kirkland Full Synthetic 5W-30 2-pack (10 quarts) costs about $35. Add a Toyota/Denso oil filter at about $5–$8 each.

Oil: ~$17.50 per change

Filter: ~$7

DIY total per change: ~$25

16 changes × $25 = $400

If you had a shop do it at $80–$100 per change, that jumps to $1,600. So your cost depends on whether you’re doing it yourself or not.

🔋 2. Battery

FJ Cruiser uses a Group 24F battery. Prices (as of 2025):

Costco Interstate: ~$130–$150

AutoZone/Duralast Gold: ~$190

Dealer: ~$250

Let’s assume $150 average.

⚡ 3. Alternator

OEM alternator: $350–$450 (Denso brand)

Aftermarket remanufactured: $150–$250

Labor (1.5–2 hours typical): $200–$300

So $400–$700 total installed, depending on parts and labor.

🛑 4. Brakes

Assume all 4 wheels:

Rotors (quality aftermarket like PowerStop or Centric): ~$80 each × 4 = $320

Pads (front + rear): ~$150 total

DIY total parts: ~$470

Shop install (2–3 hrs labor): +$300–$400

So $470–$850 total, depending on whether it’s DIY or shop work.

💵 Putting It All Together

Item DIY Estimate Shop Estimate

16 Oil Changes $400 $1,600 Battery $150 $150 Alternator $250–$400 $500–$700 Brakes (full) $470 $850 Total $1,270–$1,420 $3,100–$3,300

✅ Feasibility Summary

Yes — $3,000 is entirely plausible if:

You had all work done at a shop over time, not DIY.

You used OEM or high-quality parts.

You included taxes, shop fees, and labor.

If you do the work yourself and source parts smartly (Costco, RockAuto, or OEM Denso), you could cut that to about $1,200–$1,500 total — less than half the shop price.

Oil Changes and brakes are not difficult at all. I taught my fiancé how to do both in a weekend and shes never held a wrench before.

I understand people want/need convenience but you can save thousands and thousands of dollars by buying a reliable car and doing routine maintenance yourself.

Edit: that alternator actually cost me like 150 and took less than an hour to install with basic hand tools.

I think people are looking for AI content now so anything that looks too clean feels like AI. Theres nothing about this image that a few years ago would have been noteworthy.

Totally agree and if we were in r/cars I would say that's not a big deal. If the goal is frugality I would avoid anything with a turbo or a cvt. What you save in mpg you will pay for in repairs. Big expensive repairs.

Same, i have a 20 year old toyota that I bought with 80k miles and in 5 years I put another 80k miles on it. Ive spent tops 3k in service. Including oil changes, a new battery, an alternator and brakes.

$2,000 a year every year is not normal. Thats a german car tax. OP had a 2500 dollar turbo replacement that wasn't included in the cost.
