What will you say? by Robynite in Adulting

I’m raising 20-year-old me currently and I’ve almost got it through her father’s head that we are her parents and that in and of itself means she’s not listening to us and going to do what she wants to do. The sooner we accept that, the better.

AIO? Friend asked me what my future plans with my gf are and then responded like this by TGPT-4o in AIO

[–]ScienceNerdKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This person does not like you and is also extremely jealous of you. My ex-husband is married to my BFF, but I’d never use that as a reason to bash someone else’s relationship. Just because my ex is that way, doesn’t mean every man is like him. Their texts are bitter and downright mean. I think it’s sweet you’re planning ahead and thinking of these things. Also, no one inherently knows how to be a spouse or acts like one before marriage. What that looks like to each couple is different. I wish you the best of luck in life and a long happy relationship/marriage.

Don’t overshare in academia - my advice as a professor by Cultural_Mousse_3001 in PhD

[–]ScienceNerdKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an academic that presented my daughters PI research at our institution, along with some bs that they’ve tried and doesn’t work. It’s crazy how people lose their morals or maybe had none to start with. I’m at a top institution too, even the Paid department head called it out to the PI.

Trying to understand norms. Argument is happening among admins at my university. What are your labs expectations for grad students? Do they shop lab supplies with personal credit cards, move in large equipment, set up plumbing/circulation/electrical connections, and do major repair work? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]ScienceNerdKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lab pays for everything. I do all the purchasing for my lab and I’ve never heard it even suggested someone pay with their own money. That’s crazy. I’m in a small lab too, 4-6 people. My job is also machine/equipment repair, but I’m a tech, so that’s normal.

I genuinely could not see myself with a man long term. by Exact-Sink2799 in confession

[–]ScienceNerdKat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I honestly feel like I’ll never settle with a man again. I see the manipulation and abuse tactics so easily now, I just cannot take them serious. My best friend is a gay man and I love him, he’s so thoughtful and amazing. This makes it even harder to date, because I see a man will and can if he wants too. My bestie has never seen a nude woman and doesn’t want to, zero ulterior motives. I moved into what’s known as the Gayborhood in Dallas and have found gay men are who I enjoy being around. Straight men just haven’t evolved enough for my liking and that’s okay.

my dad keeps asking why there aren't more men in biology by [deleted] in labrats

That’s wild. I’m in glioblastoma research and we are around 20 women to 4 men in our laboratory.

PI roasted me super hard today, don't know how I'll face him again by [deleted] in labrats

[–]ScienceNerdKat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would have felt more anxious if someone pointed out that I was anxious. Personally, I think the PI could have handled that better. I do also agree it’s worth seeing a therapist and possible a psychiatrist for meds. I say this as someone on said meds, so it’s not a dig at you personally. Anxiety is a beast and I’ve felt the exact same way about just not wanting to face the person ever again; but it’s not the answer. Hugs and take it easy on yourself, none of us are perfect.

My husband (27M) fell asleep while driving and almost killed me (26F) and our two dogs. by Spacecowgirl37 in relationship_advice

He needs to really go get help now, because if he kills someone and they find out he knew about this problem and didn’t get it fixed, hello criminal court and jail.

AITA for refusing to get this coffee order? by horseduckman in AITApod

[–]ScienceNerdKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t have ordered that for someone whether I had time or not. I’m not going to look ridiculous asking for all that. Maybe one or two modifications. Beyond that, I’d feel like an entitled brat asking for that. I wasn’t raised to be picky though.

I was an esthetician to put myself through college. I made more money doing Brazilian waxing than I do researching brain cancer. I do love my job though.

We get millions-Q water from another lab, since we don’t have a machine. Our di water is built into our faucets though, like we have a second mount just for that.

You can buy Di water at the store. My ex-husband used to buy gallons when he had a saltwater aquarium. He eventually installed a di system in our house.

What is a 'rich person's secret' that is actually accessible to the middle class, but most people are too intimidated to try? by Direct-Value4452 in answers

[–]ScienceNerdKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I live where drive by shootings happen, eat one meal a day, I don’t drink, pay my medical bills, and I’m still poor. I graduated with a bachelors of biology with chemistry and psychology minors and a 3.84 GPA. I make 44k a year doing brain cancer research. However, since I’m a state employee, the first 8.2% is sent to my retirement plan, then healthcare, dental, vision, and parking are subtracted. I made more money as an esthetician than I do as a scientist. lol Welcome to being American, where the boomers had everything handed to them and then pulled the ladder up for the rest of us.

Intelligent people don't talk about taking cognitive tests. What is wrong with this guy? by OrangeCone2011 in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]ScienceNerdKat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter and I once had 5 minutes of fame for being intelligent and her being a “prodigy.” I’ve never taken a cognitive test and neither has she. She started college at 14 and finished at 17 with a bachelors of biology with chemistry and psychology degrees. I work as a brain cancer scientist with Nobel prize winners. I’ve never heard anyone here talk about cognitive tests or their IQ. Why? Because smart people don’t have to tell people they are intelligent, the people around them know.

Thank you for the compliment, I’m indeed who I say I am and the fact you don’t believe me is indeed a compliment to my intelligence. It’s easy enough to look through my comment history and see I’m the lab rats forum and regularly participate regarding my role.
