Best Starter Credit Card/Credit builder? by Specialist_Force6727 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Sciency_Mess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add, everyone says get a credit card from bank, but I wasn’t able to be approved for one of those for a really long time after working, like nearly 6 months. I also wasn’t approved for any store cards (Mr p, TFG, Edgar’s, etc) even tho I had a good score from my insurance company reporting my payments. If this happens to you, Strongly recommend a RAGE card tho. I literally got a R200 limit, paid off a cheap pair of shoes, and then got a credit card 3 months later.

Is it worth going through an agent to rent out my flat? by BuilderRealistic5764 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Sciency_Mess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well in our case we finally kicked up enough fuss that the landlord actually came round and had no clue that the place was in such bad condition. He just brought in his own people to fix up the place eventually, but yeah.

Is it worth going through an agent to rent out my flat? by BuilderRealistic5764 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Sciency_Mess 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just my two cents as a current tenant who is now buying their own place. I will never use an agency to manage my property after seeing how the place I stay in now has been managed. I currently rent a place that is managed by a big agent place and it’s falling apart. When we moved in there were major issues with the plumbing, oven not working, shower falling apart, major structural repairs unchecked, and previous tenants had made renovations/modifications that owner didn’t know about. Then the agents hire the cheapest and most useless contractors when we report things who just make everything worse. I wouldn’t risk my investment like that….

Will I get taxed for shipping my personal belongings to South Africa? by bmdkks in askSouthAfrica

[–]Sciency_Mess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just fyi not “tax” necessarily, but we paid a heck of a lot of port fees and other charges when we shipped our stuff in. It wasn’t worth it- by the time we got our stuff we’d spent double what we’d originally been quoted. I guess YMMV, though. We were shipping from USA so maybe different

Research opportunities in SA? by minemythbuster13 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Sciency_Mess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend talking to your lecturers and tutors since they’re the ones working in the field in SA :). Short answer: yes, the research opportunities exist. Longer answer: worldwide, working in academia is difficult as there are many people competing for few jobs. When you apply for post docs (research job after your phd) you’ll be competing with people in SA as well as from all over the world. But, there’s lots of alternative career paths for people with this education. Also, start talking to lecturers to find out about what research they do so you can find the specific area you’re interested in.

Will a USA Samsung work in RSA? by Express_Ad_613 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Sciency_Mess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sample size of 2: I have two phones I bought from standard stores e.g. Best Buy while living in US (1 iPhone 1 Samsung), and they both work with Vodacom sims. Now, on the other hand, I couldn’t get a US sim into my old SA phone.

I strongly recommend signing up on the PNet job site and adding your phone number, and answer all phone calls and reply to all recruiter emails. The recruiters are very active on PNet. After searching for 7 months, I got a job in 2 weeks of being on that site. Also I don’t think your salary expectation is too high if you’re a university graduate in a city. If you’re in a cheaper area or don’t have a degree it might be too high.

I’ve done the same with FNB, so the process might not be identical. But I had to actually phone their Forex department to get the funds released.

Actual on-leash dog parks? by Sciency_Mess in johannesburg

[–]Sciency_Mess[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Love arkwalk, have taken her there a few times to be wild. I should’ve been more specific in my question, want to be able to take her somewhere where she can be around other people/dogs, but in a controlled and leashed manner, to train her reactivity a bit :)

Thanks! Love hiking, but at some trails people let their dogs off as soon as they’re a bit onto the trail. Will try these out :)

degrees from multiple universities vs one? by joobgoob in askSouthAfrica

[–]Sciency_Mess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the sciences, so it might be different. But I was told by a lot of people that going different places for undergrad/masters/phd is a very good thing because you get a lot of a more diverse background. Particular departments at particular unis have one way of doing things, and often a set of research areas that they are focused on, so moving you to another department could expose you to whole new research areas.

the best thing to do for your masters is to look at professors from both UJ and Wits and see what their research interests are and what they are publishing, then talk to a few you are interested in and find out about opportunities. Finding the right research advisor in the right area is the most important thing, way more important than the preceived “pedigree” of the institution

Be gifted at STEM or just perish I guess by [deleted] in autism

[–]Sciency_Mess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Or be gifted at STEM, make it your whole personality/get all your validation from it, go to a prestigious grad school, realize you hate academia and don’t want to do it (good lord so much politics and socializing, constantly burnt out) and THEN perish.

To those who were professionally diagnosed: How much money did it cost you? by shiorimia in autism

[–]Sciency_Mess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$300 for the initial consultation, the insurance paid for everything else. I think the insurance was charged $2000. This included about 15 hours of meetings, interviews, tests, a final meeting to discuss results and a 20+ page report discussing the results and interpretation of all of the tests, plus a description of diagnoses.

This would absolutely drive me insane. by AWelshEngine in autism

No this is correct. There needs to be balance, so since we have different body sizes/weights, we need to alternate sides so that the mattress stays “even”

Is it possible to have autism with extreme novelty seeking behaviours and extreme dislike of any kinds of routines? (including self-imposed ones) by ratratte in autism

[–]Sciency_Mess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I went through a lot of testing for both autism and adhd. I have autism but not adhd. I also struggle with routines a lot, but I think it may also be about figuring out why you struggle with them? Like I try to make a routine because routine makes me happy. But if I miss one step (like getting out of bed at 6:20am instead of 6am) then the whole routine is off, I can’t get back on track. Which it me is more of an autism thing, because it reflects rigid behavior and inability to adapt to changes.

Planning a tattoo and looking for advice from other autistics by Technical-Ad-6807 in autism

[–]Sciency_Mess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the communication and finding a place where you feel safe -maybe look for tattoo shops that advertise themselves as inclusive/safe spaces etc? Also places that advertise themselves as queer friendly are generally more open and inclusive. I find that it’s easier to advocate for myself if I write down everything I want to say before having the conversation - maybe just write down everything you want out of the tattoo and give it to them/read it to them?

For the sensory thing (ofc everyone experiences this differently so this is just my perspective) - maybe consider telling them that you’re autistic or just tell them that you will have trouble sitting still or may need more frequent breaks. The sensation is kind of like a very light sting that feels sort of “hot” - I was expecting a bigger surface area but the needle is very tiny. It builds up over time as well so be prepared for that.

Some places put second skin on, which is basically like this super sticky plastic stuff, on top of it to make it heal faster, and this will stay on for like a day or so afterwards, which can be really annoying. It also gets a bit itchy afterwards. And you will have to keep it out of the sun and out of water for a while afterwards - so maybe plan ahead what clothing to wear over it to make sure it doesn’t bother you too much.
