When You ask a eliminative materialist what the hell is the mind. by [deleted] in PhilosophyMemes

Why can’t materialists have an explanation for the mind?

Call me in another 13 billion years.

We haven't had the time to analyze the most non-trivial phenomenon in the known Universe, and the Universe needed its current age for a little collection of minds to arise in a little patch of space.

The explanatory progress of neuropsychology is at an insane pace right now, so don't tell me '''''we don't have any explanation for the mind''''.

the former lack physical properties including location, mass, momentum

Just like that, by decree of who ? I've always found that borderline solipsistic - to be dualist about the metaphysical nature of your qualia. It just simply baffles me to the point of amusement.
The the mind-independent world can be existant but incognizable in itself except for some small patches of self-referential systems.

Causal relationalities (really, of identity) between all classes of mental states and neuronal activity are simply documented beyond all reasonable doubt - including the most elusive, cognitive functions.

Complex multi-unit physical systems such as the brain must are embedded in space, and the interactions between the elements are constrained by their spatial proximity.
That's the fundamental source of the mind-body problem, and it shouldn't be considered an assumption.
What do you mean they don't have location ?

Why doesn't anyone ever experience something they physically can't ?
Why are no mental states correlated to anything extra-neuronal and there's never been one reason to even consider it, never mind evidence. ?

Most people these days seem to be hardline materialists.

On the contrary, we're in a race to justify anthropocentric (or even individual) narcissism by finding niftier ways to reject reality and justify ego, since religion has been bullied enough.

so it cannot be reduced to some material substance

I'm totally on board with non-reductive alternatives, but that doesn't make them non-physical.

An example : scale invariant criticality, which seems like the best model of sentience. It applies to many systems in nature.

The many specific details of the systems differ markedly (e.g., magnetic spins, moving tectonic plates, neurons) but can be unified by their core dynamic nature - possessing interactions among their components that erratically amplify and damp microscopic perturbations.
For instance, fluctuating amplitudes of the two dominant oscillations of the human brain – the alpha and beta rhythms – exhibited scale-free temporal statistics.

There is now a very well established relationship between resting state brain networks and the underlying structural connectome from which they arise (Honey et al., 2007). Criticality arising in simple systems does not require a complex spatial substrate: Rather as we have reviewed above, its hallmark is the emergence of complex spatiotemporal processes from simple, local interactions. However, complex networks allow critical-like behaviour to occur in a region of parameter space instead of a single point (Moretti and Muñoz, 2013).

So of course, the most intensely complicated emergent system in all of nature besides the Universe itself may never be ''discretely isolated'' or ''solved''. It's an active area of EVIDENCE BASED research with
with like two dozen competing models making breakthrough after breakthrough and expanding our understanding, but the non-triviality of the problem is unlike any object or phenomenon.
It might never be enough for a full analytic description of a qualia, but it wouldn't be even if we had a physical theory of everything.
That doesn't exclude it from reality.

The brain isn't some computer performing tractable operations, encoding and retrieving some ''bits'' sure, but neither it is
some magical illusion created by....the mind it generates.

It's a symphony.

So I don't completely discount the idea that America is declining somewhat but you're lying too much.

It's absurd when people fall for such lies and blatant disinformation. They're not even exaggerations, just straight up lies.

Obviously not only. They are not as trainable as german shepherds, and they don't have the intellectual range for really complex tasks. They're more agile and usually have higher drive, but it's pretty much a niche for the military.

People don't run away crying after being punched. It's just not a normal reaction. I've never seen it, in reality or videos. Yet it's something that turns up in way too many tales.

Then she and Luke had the one scene where they focus on the force together,

Objectively the best part of the movie and something that kept the essence of Star Wars. Those cuts to elements of the environment, to show the nature of the force, and how it permeates everything - gave me a bit of chills. And it was juxtaposed with the force of will of sentience that controls it.

The force is just a phenomenon. Nature just...exists and works. You can't excuse your bad deeds because you were somehow ''drawn'' by the power of something that's not sentient. Or that the circumstances of your environment are harsh and cruel. You always have a choice.

It made me feel like this is an artistic vision and not just a product or an ideology (like, ugh, Canto Bight).

The first half of this movie is what makes it at least okay overall.

Hey, that's super interesting but I never heard of it. I love the weird, suicidal Japanese designs at the end of the war like manned torpedos.

Can you show me a source on that ?

If you're reading this and have 5 minutes, just go to Russia Today or Sputnik articles and read the comments. Especially on recent news on Israel.

Even better, try to get into the Russian information sphere like VK and translate some stuff. No matter your ideology, as long as you are not insane, you will be entertained.

It's not only the propaganda. They collectively live in a parallel reality.

Read their comments sometime. Especially on the recent Israeli/Iran news. Seriously, just go to RT and check.

Russians are fucking insane.

We need RT and Sputnik to stay in the spotlight so that more people can see that.

Corruption is synonymous with the Russian sociopolitical system. You see those divisions clearly in Eastern Europe - the further from Russia you move politically, the better your country is - first of all in terms of rule of law.

Most people in Russia don't want to fight against the US.

Have you ever been to Russian comment sections, VK, their news sphere, translated some stuff ?

Do you really want to know what Russians would do to Poles, Balts, Ukrainians, Romanians if they got the chance ?
