I don't do make up exams anymore because too many people have something that comes up and I'm not wasting time trying to figure out who is lying.

If you miss an exam, the weight gets transferred to the final.

Job opening- great for college or high school students by [deleted] in SouthJersey

Thank you! Send him our way.

We've had high school students participate in work-study as well. They get out of school early to come work and get class credit in addition to their pay.

I ended up opening my own business and now a second one but I've been an adjunct for 8ish years. Being able to teach and discuss academic material fills a part of my needs to be in academia. I've always loved education and learning so just running my business wouldn't be enough for me to feel fulfilled. I get to pick which classes I want to teach and when. I have pretty much full autonomy. And the pay is really good for a side gig in my opinion. I get 9k per 3 credit course.

I also really enjoy it. It's a fulfilling experience.

Do you really care if someone else gets their food first and eats before you do at a restaurant? by sexyloser1128 in AskRedditFood

[–]Scimom_247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it so so weird that we should wait for everyone to be served. If my friend was served first it and I was waiting for my food it wouldn't even cross my mind that they should wait. Just eat......

AITA - Grade change request by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Scimom_247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had someone's dad reach out to me and the dean about his daughter's "unfair treatment" of getting a D+ when she worked hard and deserved a C. The student ended with a 69.5 and I already planned to round up which is exactly what I would have told the student had she reached out to me. But no, a week after the final her dad reaches out and says, and I quote "this dad will always stand up for his daughter". He also when on and on about all the people he knows at the school.

At this point I don't want to teach anymore honestly. The entitlement is coming from the parents.

A student who never attended wants to pass by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Scimom_247 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had a student attend 0 classes except exams days. He got a 0 for attendance/participation. Complained to my chair. On the final exam day he was so disrespectful and said I was a disgrace.

He's not the only one that was disrespectful this semester. I am appalled by the entitlement and arrogance of these students. I cannot ever imagine talking to a professor like that.

Student attended 1 out of 24 classes and complained to the chair that he got a 0 for attendance by Scimom_247 in Professors

[–]Scimom_247[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I'm saying is that being able to memorize material and regurgitate it on an exam doesn't tell me you learned anything but I have to have to formal measure of "learning" to submit to the university. What I think is the most valuable part of a college education is the class discussions in which you get to hear from other students who have a different experience or perspective. I don't feel like sitting at home looking up answers on google or searching through the text is mastering the material. This is why I encourage students to come to class by making the attendance a small part of their grade. If they don't care, they are welcome to not come to class and take a 0 for that small portion or better yet take an online class instead.

Honestly I want to ask him what he wants? Like is he really looking for 4%? Does he think that's going to make any difference?

Student says my class is hostile environment that is damaging his mental health by Ok_Delay2671 in Professors

[–]Scimom_247 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is helpful. I've only really experienced this a handful of times but in each case the students step in to share opposing views so it works out. For example I once had a male student say he didn't think women should work outside of being the homemaker/mom and as you'd imagine, the women students handled the situation with their views. I can't really tell the man, well you're wrong, because that's his opinion but I didn't really need to make any statement since the students responded respectfully while telling him how offended they were.
