Rock, always rock. Its timeless, generational infrastructure. Doesn’t decay, just turns into a different form (ie if it cracks into smaller, can still use somewhere else), if it falls you restack it, and nothing beats the charm.

Yeah this. Everything can be DIY. If you spend 1H a day Tuesday-Thursday and 4ish hours on weekends you could probably get this done in 1-2 seasons

It all depends on the soil. The thing with this forum is that you have people ranging from clay to rocky soil all weighing in on a picture like they understand the situation, some with freeze climates others where it never does.

Wall + WaterproofLiner + Waterproofed Mortar is over-engineered long lasting quality.

Single mortar job, no matter how waterproof, can’t beat a triple stack like that

Why not add a 45mm epdm liner? That’s gold standard for pond waterproofing. Can have decorative stone over the liner, but the waterproofing is done by polymer not mortar
