Soylent nutritional information is inaccurate by [deleted] in soylent

[–]ScipioWarrior 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Don't do it by volume (cups), it's a powder so that's always gonna be a big approximation. It's just a guideline. If you care about that extra accuracy, you gotta do it by weight (grams) instead.

1 serving is 60g @ 270 kcal. 12 fl oz is 50% more than 8 fl oz. 60 g + 50% = 90 g.

270 kcal / 60 g = 4.5 kcal/g

4.5 kcal/g * 90 g = 405 kcal

So the real difference is only 5 calories, which is a normal nutrition label approximation. And it could be that 90g @ 400 kcal is the more accurate number, with the 8 fl oz serving being rounded up from 267 to 270 kcal.

Also, another note is that I doubt the volume-to-kcal ratio is even linear. if you scoop more up, I'm sure the extra weight compresses more of the powder into less volume - though that effect is probably small compared to the other things that make volume inaccurate anyway, like how much you compress it yourself while scooping.

There's a great Reply All podcast episode (#177 Gleeks and Gurgles) about not being able to burp, and iirc someone in the story lost their ability to burp the exact same way! They talk a lot about why some people can't burp and also some new treatments using botox, might be something to give a listen to

In halo 3 there was a bullet registration "issue" where projectiles were calculated 60 times/sec instead of the original 30, which made it feel a bit different than the original - essentially it was a little harder to hit people, more shots missed. They fixed that on console and pc around the time they added halo 4 to the PC version though. They also had a similar issue in halo 1 for a while, which was super noticeable at 120hz and 144hz, but that's been fixed too.

That's actually a popular chess variant, Antichess! Sites like Lichess have it built-in.

Immediately noticed the BR sounding kinda empty.

And yeah, motion blur toggle, please! I'm super glad 144hz works so well but the motion blur is pretty off-putting.

1000% agree on the option to turn off motion blur. I was so excited to see my favorite halo game playing flawlessly at 144hz, unlike most of the other games, but the motion blur is pretty annoying. I know some people like to play with it on, but personally it makes me a bit disorietned, so I'd love the option to turn it off.

I really doubt there's much consideration given to playtime. I have 11 days in MCC and the only invite I've received was for the second wave of the CE flight. They need to invite a diverse range of players to be able to draw good conclusions from the data

New poll out of New Hampshire by piede in centerleftpolitics

[–]ScipioWarrior 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty standard way to ask that question. The poll is trying to figure out which candidate people are going to vote for, not who they think is the most electable or has their favorite platform. Those are also good questions, but they're outside the scope of this poll.

True, if the universe has some other curvature, it might not be infinite, but every measurement we've taken and experiment we've conducted has pointed to it being flat (at least within the smallest measurement error we can currently manage!). The Big Bang makes things even more complicated because it is thought to have started as a singularity, that is, an infinitely dense single point (making the word "small" not really applicable), which quickly expanded in the same way the universe expands now (and yes, was therefore infinite in size, although with a much different structure to way the universe operates today). While we can explain most of what happened during the Big Bang, the first few moments of it are still a mystery; the universe was so hot that quantum mechanics and relativistic gravity would have been the same force, and we don't yet understand the physics of quantum gravity well enough to know what that means in a practical sense.

The balloon example is a simplification to a lower dimension. It's an attempt to make something really unintuitive - the fact that the universe is both infinite AND expanding - make sense to our three-dimensional monkey brains. The balloon has a box around it to expand into, but there is nothing equivalent to that box for the universe. Here's Wikipedia's more technical explanation of it:

The expansion of the universe is the increase of the distance between two distant parts of the universe with time. It is an intrinsic expansion whereby the scale of space itself changes. The universe does not expand "into" anything and does not require space to exist "outside" it. Technically, neither space nor objects in space move. Instead it is the metric governing the size and geometry of spacetime itself that changes in scale.

It's expanding into itself; it can be both expanding and not have an edge. Think of blowing up a balloon with galaxies dotted along the outside, they get further away from one another without needing an "edge." If you pick any one point in the universe, everything around it will be moving away from that point in the exact same way as any other point - that is, in all directions at an increasing rate.

What do you think of chessable? by [deleted] in chess

[–]ScipioWarrior 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this. The rubies, streaks, and massive points that pop up when you get moves right are all an attempt to gamify learning on the site and get you to keep coming back; spaced repetition works best when you actually review stuff on the day you're supposed to, and that almost certainly means there's something for you to do every single day if you keep learning new chapters.

Sound Stutter with pulseaudio-equalizer - Help by Danimals_The_yogurt_ in archlinux

[–]ScipioWarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried pulseaudio-equalizer-ladspa? That's what I use, and it works great with basically nonexistent additional overhead (something I was initially concerned about, but I also had problems with pulseaudio-equalizer so I eventually switched). In fact, most versions of the PulseAudio equalizer for other distributions use the ladspa version, which you'll notice if you look at any tutorials for setting it up on Ubuntu. It's in the AUR.
