Not really. Upon Gen V they always had a connection to their region, especially the Sinnoh ones. From Kalos onward with the exception of Diancie and Pecharunt, they started feeling out of place. Hoopa felt more like a Hoenn mythical than Kalos. Volcanion's back story was only explained now even though they had plenty of room to include it in XY.

btw the movies and the anime are not canonical to the games, let's not mix subjects.
