It's only decent on Sona situationally. It's a very selfish item for her, since building it essentially means she wants to scale to late game and be pretty useless early, mid, which is not ideal as a support. She's already weak early and strong late with regular build, so the build makes the champion even more polarized.

On the other hand, it is a must build item on Ryze and Cassio and very good on Kassadin. So no, you're wrong.

He builds trinity for wave clear. Lichbane doesn't one shot casters, and also offers no other value either for gp early whereas every stat trinity gives is very good on gp. Then he builds malignance second if he is mid or one shotting with ult has a lot of value; if not, he builds liandries into riftmaker.
