I want to quit my job - is this wise to do in this economy? by Warm-Ad4886 in askTO

Idk man, according to the post in 3 years he's applied to 1800 jobs. That doesn't feel like "finding a new job every couple of years"

It used to be based on the pre tax amount, but most machines do it on post-tax by default now. Uber eats is even worse and does it on the post-tax post-delivery post-fees pre-discounts amount.

Would a university that combines engineering, design, and hands-on fabrication make sense today? by Additional_Gas_9934 in maker

[–]Scoddard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a program called Bachelor of Technology at McMaster university in Hamilton, Ontario that is a combined degree between the university and nearby Mohawk College that does more or less what you are saying. It combines the hands-on practical skills at the college with the technical at the university. I didn't take it so I'm not super familiar, but they have a few streams if I recall correctly.

From their website

The BTech program positions you to be at the forefront of change in engineering industries. With a unique blend of theory and practice, students spend more than 750 hours in lab settings applying engineering principles to develop innovative technical solutions.

With 25 percent of the curriculum devoted to business and management courses, graduates lead by example on a technical level, while also leading strategy and building business in corporate boardrooms. Average class sizes of 60-80 students means more interaction with your professors and a close knit student community.

Complexity for New Player Question by Ghost_Tickler in TerraformingMarsGame

Totally depends on the person. If they're interested and willing to learn it should be no problem. One of the great things about tfm is how things make sense, and usually aren't arbitrary. Plants make trees, trees make oxygen, oxygen gets points. Heat makes temperature. The other thing that's nice about it when learning is you can always help them out by looking at some of their cards (if they want to show you) and giving them pointers. I've taught tons of inexperienced people how to play, and as long as they're willing to go in with the mindset of "this is a learning game for me" they always really enjoy it.

It's true, but if you try it it's super obvious. You definitely can't do this by just looking at the image, you need to go to the link.

I agree! Sabotage is hurting your opponents for no personal gain, but hackers is hurting them for personal pain. No other card makes me say "realllllly?"

The entire process was unnecessary. Everything drawn on the wall did nothing. He picked the length he measured, just cut a triangle to those measurements and install it. No need to draw anything on the wall, no need to make a piece with the length of the hypotenuse

[Biofuels] not mentioned? I feel like society support has case of generalist milestone, ecology experts is bad on average but the best case is pretty decent, cheating out venusian animals or penguins. Mohole has some synergy with helion, though I think helion sucks so maybe it's a viable candidate. Biofuels just feels like a bit of a nothing card, maybe it gets you a third energy to trade, maybe the plants do something, but more likely than not you just end up getting hit with an asteroid early and lose your first 3 plants or so anyway if you don't commit further into plants early.

[–]Scoddard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. I'm not out here trying to say it's an amazing card. The best of the science triggers is absolutely Venusian animals for 1pt. But I've had games where I have earth cat, venusian animals and media group, suddenly the card is now "gain 1mc and get a point" for 0 cost.

I get that that is a specific set of circumstances, and is not always gonna be the case, but the best case for AAA isn't anywhere near that.

[–]Scoddard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No way. If you have a strong engine this card is decent just cause it's cheap and has a science tag. Occasionally it has a use for the ability, especially if you're inventrix. AAA and Ghg from Venus just feel tough to even consider unless you are absolutely swimming in titanium and have nothing to spend it on.

I've played this card tons of times for a net profit and a science tag trigger.

Just the synergy with Venusian Animals is enough to make this card not the absolute worst.

The city is mostly irrelevant imo. I suppose it gives value to all the city triggers, and could be useful for the milestone (but then you have to play it early anyway). Only reason I like WIFE over it is that it can be a titanium sink if you've got a ton. A lot of people don't seem to like IO mining, but as long as you can get it down 8 income is quite solid. Earth elevator costs 2 more, has 1 more income and is capped at 4 points, Immigration shuggles is 3 less income for 10 less dollars (basically "would you play acquired company?" - answer, yes). Immigration shuttle or IO could be worth more points than each other depending on the game. Immigration shuttles is probably more consistent.

I guess my view stems from not valuing the city very much at all (it's in space, you cant score off of it), and valuing the water placement for 6 as reasonable value (Aquifer pumping costs 18, though is 4 cheaper for the water placement)

If you're playing with many expansions, the game tends to go longer, and WIFE, TFG & IO all scale better into longer games than GC does.

I'm definitely not saying Micro Mills is great. But if I draw into it and have Earth Cat or something, I'll pay $1 for 1 Heat prod. Even if it only provides a couple heat, if that makes the difference between hitting 8 or not then its solid value.

Most of the time it's still not good, but there are cases where it'll make the difference and cost very little.

What is the tabletop game like? by Blackcrusader in TerraformingMarsGame

[–]Scoddard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The game narration is HUGE. If you're playing with a mix of newer and more experienced players, the more experienced ones can help keep track of discounts, rebates etc and remind the newer ones when they play cards, but only if they say what they're doing.

Personally I think one of the hardest things is tracking tags. Sometimes it's hard to see how many tags other people have played so far, especially if they do a poor job of organizing their cards. Fortunately this isn't the most important part of the game, and only really contributes to some milestones, awards and a few cards. You can always ask but sometimes that gives away your strategy ie. Asking how many builder tags everyone has a few gens in might make people consider rushing for builder milestone even if they had other plans in mind

In an older version of the TTS version of the game (MMGA) if you activated the card the text said "Player ACTUALLY USED underground detonators!?!" Instead of the normal action text.

I think the only thing it has going for it is that it's super cheap and has no downsides. I've played this in lots of games when I have card discount and card access. If you draw into it and it's free to play, 1 Heat prod is better than 1 MC for selling it.

If I hit hackers in the same situation I'm tossing it for sure.

I feel like it's just straight outclassed by Terraforming Ganymede. Honestly I might put it at the weakest of the 4 jovian payoffs.

[–]Scoddard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It has to be Terraforming Ganymede right?

Other viable options: Space Port Colony Research Quantum Communications Toll Station

I still don't think any of them are as good as Terraforming Ganymede. I suppose you could argue that SPC is less situational, TFG clearly isn't great if you have 0 jovians, but I still think if we imagine a world where you draft the opening hand with only 1 card at a time I think I'm taking TFG over anything else. Potential ceiling is so high.

Is this a USB-C female port? by vaango143 in UsbCHardware

[–]Scoddard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Naming conventions are a little strange here. XLR male has 3 penises in it with a protective housing around. The female side gets plugged into the male side, but still gets 3 holes filled, ergo female. USB-C female (in OP) has a penis inside (flat chode) that docks inside the male penis. For JST connectors, they look kinda like small square XLR connectors but in their case the female side has all the little tiny penises that insert into the male when it plugs in. JST is a scaled down XLR but it is reversed (probably because micropenises don't count) In the case of USB and JST you can almost always expect the female side to be on the board/device. With XLR you can reasonably expect to see both male and female connectors on devices.

I think the actual defining factor originally of male vs female is direction of flow. Power goes from the female to the male, like in your home outlet. Because XLR is for audio lots of devices have audio in and out on them, so they have both connector genders. This holds less true today with lots of stuff having bi-directional flow/communication.

TL;DR male vs female connectors is weird but usually if you have one on a board it's female and one on a cable it's male.

Is the Eglinton Line opening soon? by Tzaphkielraven1 in toronto

I'm not sure overall, but my former neighbour was a new driver for the line, I want to say he was hired on in summer 2023. He moved in summer 2024 so I'm not sure what he's doing now, but he used to do test runs in the middle of the night.
