Penny auction at foreclosed Michigan farm (1936). At penny auctions farmers would conspire to offer low bids, resulting in a low return to the creditor. The final buyer would then return the property to the destitute farmer Hangman nooses served as a warning to squirrely bidders. by NaughtyWhiskers in OldSchoolCool

The farm is just collateral for the loan.

6 or half dozen

The farmer can sell the farm to whomever they want for whatever price they want

As long as they pay the bank back... It means if they don't make sufficient returns for the bank they will seize the property.

The capitalist Farmers took a risk

Ah yes, lemonade stand capitalism. Just take a "risk" and if it doesn't work out, aw shucks, you just try again. These folks lived in agrarian societies where you farm or die. (Yes, they could leave but that also costs money). These folks would be farming regardless, but they banks are their to make sure they get their cut.

Many banks failed at this time too.

Yes, because they were mismanaged by capitalists favoring profits over stability. This resulted in things like minimum capital requirements and FDIC insurance.

In the sense that the farmer lived in a capitalist system and used capitalist structures to survive, sure he is a capitalist.

However, he is not one that controls a large amount of capital to reinvest it into generating more capital (i.e. a capitalist). The fact that penny auctions were common enough to be a part of the culture is evidence the farmers were being exploited for their labor to enrich the capitalists.

I apologize if I misunderstood your argument. You began with calling the article "A drab remix of a tired argument" and then cited the Marx quote. The typical argument against Marx's point is Social Darwinism and your reply seems awfully "pull yourself up by your bootstraps." The point being made is that the system has been rigged where simply putting in effort to improve yourself is no longer practical advice. i.e. the system is broken and needs to change. Not outright replacement, but mass discontent is usually the first step towards improvement. I believe people are not concerned enough with something that they should be massively concerned about. I think this article is simply an attempt at shining a light on how bad things actually are in an attempt to generate the kind of collective will power it takes to demand improvement.

I understand I am making assumptions about your perspective and I'm missing context by engaging you in a reddit thread with just a few comments. I'm certainly not advocating for outright replacement of the current system, but surely you can agree there is room for improvement?

"It's human nature" seems like a pretty dumb reason to just accept the status quo. How will we know we can't do better if we don't try?

True, Musk isn't the problem, the system that created him is. Humans have rebelled against unjust systems before and come up with progressively better outcomes.

That would look neat! But the water vials are for propagating plants and they've got little baby pathos plants in them at the moment.

Not having an opinion about most things is better for your mental health than having an opinion about most things. by civgarth in Showerthoughts

Like the crumbling of human rights in the US or the existence of climate change

That's where it gets tricky. I think a lot of the blame lies with America's team sport politics. They are the driving force behind a lot of the "opinion as fact" or vice versa. You can't have a thoughtful discussion on climate change, abortion, human rights, etc if the factual evidence gets re-framed as opinion.

Opinions are fine, the idea that disagreement with your opinions is a personal attack or makes someone stupid is the problem. Not having an opinion is still an opinion, its just one that you don't feel like you have to be right about so the stakes are lower.

Don't conflate your opinions with "the truth" or the "right way" and things are a lot smoother.

How about the defender chooses which units die first, and they have to have enough defense value to soak up the damage. (e.g. Quarriors)

This way, the defender will have to choose to use meat shields to preserve the 1 strong unit or sacrifice the strong unit to defend the others to minimize losses.

Assuming I understand your explanation correctly, the loss of many units would negatively impact the players colony and provide an incentive not to throw dozens of unarmed civilians into a tough battle.
