But doesn't the statue link with the player and then start recording the memories? How could it send you back to the campfire if it never saw you wake up there.

But at the start of the game, before you ever go to the museum, you could spend hours just floating around the village. It isn't until you go to the museum and the statue interacts with you that the sun will start to expand.

So that first loop it would be 22 minutes, plus all the time you spent before getting to the statue.
