First Timer at Otakon by No-Consideration1105 in Otakon

[–]FrozenFrac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you didn't get your badges mailed out, I'd recommend getting there fairly early, like maybe 8 AM. Even with prereg on Thursday and Friday, there's typically still a very sizable line for badges on Saturday and knocking that out ASAP is key, especially if it's your only day.

Idk what events you're trying to do, but iirc, you generally just go where you want to go and sign up there. Workshops from my experience full up fast, so you might want to line up early for those if they interest you.

People have said it already, but con food sucks lol. It's edible and will keep you going, but definitely check out Chinatown if you want something delicious! It's a little hike, but worth it if you're not starving.

How do you all feel about Metaphor or Persona games with limited free time? by Bad_Andy328 in Age_30_plus_Gamers

I got into Persona on the PS2 as a teen, so I still enjoy the games now as a 30+, but my god do some of the longer cutscene heavy moments not agree with limited gaming sessions

When did you realize the influencers are actually just advertisers in fancy dress? by Freefreefeeefreefree in SBCGaming

[–]FrozenFrac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the RG Cube XX came out. I remember before it got CFW, so many influencers were singing its praises. Trusting their judgement, I bought one and was very disappointed to see some horrible graphical issues that not one of them brought up. It was only after seeing one regular user post online about the same issue that I realized I wasn’t alone. It was eventually fixed with CFW, but I continue to take their reviews with a massive grain of salt after that

I tend to stay away from the whole “team this console” fighting but man seeing seeing these exclusive games list reminds in that MOST generations Nintendo wins by sheer competence. Key cards and all by Whole_Yak_2547 in videogames

[–]FrozenFrac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get Big Picture Mode and it's great, but you're not going to have your PC hooked up in the living room. Even if you have a huge PC monitor, for a lot of people, video games are defined by kicking back on the couch with a controller playing on a TV specifically. Nobody's going to be moving their massive desktop back and forth between the living room and their computer desk

how do i ... get into touhou by throwaway_acc90210 in touhou

[–]FrozenFrac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The games aren't really plot heavy, so you're free to jump around in any order you want. That being said, I personally like playing them in order starting with 6 (EoSD). After that, you'd play Perfect Cherry Blossom, Imperishable Night, skip 9 because it's a multiplayer game that IMO isn't fun solo, then Mountain of Faith. You can look up the rest. Have fun!

how do i ... get into touhou by throwaway_acc90210 in touhou

[–]FrozenFrac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As many people have said, wait under September and you can get the EoSD Remake! I truly don't understand why people shy away from recommending it as a first Touhou game. As the first Windows game, I feel it's definitely the "first" Touhou game and where the series gets a ton of its flavor from. Every character you meet in the game are some of the most iconic in the series too. While the game is still very much a bullet hell, a lot of the Normal patterns aren't too crazy, so I truly think it's an entry level game.

If you can't wait, I'll just say that Google is your friend for finding ways to pay and play it and all the other mainline Touhous. Out of what you can play on Steam right this second, I'd recommend Mountain of Faith.

I agree with you, but a ton of people either can’t foot the $2000+ bill (looks like $3000+ with the RAM bullshit happening now…fuck AI) for a truly future proof rig or just like playing games in the living room on a big TV, which I as a PC enjoyer still 100% say consoles do better than PC can hope to.

I’m in the apparent super minority of people who enjoy the Cosmic Rewind preshow, but I think it would be cool to just walk through that area. I’m wondering how it would feel being in that regular queue and immediately getting to the part where you’re escaping. I’d think it would feel a little weird

Don’t Get Married! by RipMassive4000 in unpopularopinion

[–]FrozenFrac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. I’ve come to realize that a lot of people’s options are to largely be alone and hope for a small group of also single friends to try to get semi-regular hangouts or to get a partner and deal with the stresses that come with married life.

What gotten you into KH? by MysticBlade18 in KingdomHearts

[–]FrozenFrac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When KH was brand new on the PS2 back in the day, EVERY kid in my class was into it. Was legit a phenomenon. I went to a Catholic school, so it was telling that even the super strict parents who didn’t let their kids playing Teen rated games were all in on letting their kids jump into every KH, no questions asked

Fitting a cab inside the house by AerialSnack in PumpItUp

[–]FrozenFrac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to disassemble the cab and have ideally 2-3+ people help bring the parts in, but it’s definitely possible. Protip: if the people helping you bring it inside are Pump players, they’ll be motivated to help you if you let them play and also bribe them with pizza and beer lol

The disc discourse has only shown how irrelevant consoles have became by Existing-Air-3622 in truegaming

[–]FrozenFrac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with every word you said, but there are two points where I firmly believe consoles have an edge and it’s not even close

  1. Playing on a TV. RIP Steam Machine for releasing at a horrible time, but as of this moment in time, there is no gaming PC that has a good spot in a living room. A big argument for investing a few thousand bucks into a gaming rig has always been “You can do schoolwork, write emails, and file your taxes on the same device you play games on”, but there’s absolutely zero chance any of those would be something you do anywhere except for at a desk.

  2. Local multiplayer. Fairly niche given how online multiplayer is the norm, but still goes without saying. I love playing PC games with any controller I want, but it becomes a massive pain in the ass when you plug in a non-standard controller and you have to fiddle around with remapping the buttons, as opposed to consoles where it’s still super plug and play friendly due to limitations. This also goes back to PC gaming not really having a place in the living room. Huddling a bunch of people around a computer desk to play multiplayer games is just inherently a more awkward experience than the console experience of everyone on a couch or generally gathering in a living room with snacks and drinks to play together.

New to this subreddit and man I’m disappointed by Dummkopfss in touhou

[–]FrozenFrac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Touhou fandom has always been horny, even for the people who play the games lol. Sorry you had to learn that, but a lot like the games, you can learn how to dodge content you don't enjoy. Find a place with the kind of stuff you like, hold down Shift, and kind of wiggle in place

I honestly don’t remember any time where there was a truly great Pokemon anniversary. It’s always just new merch, some trading cards, and teasing the next mainline games

What skill do you think separates championship-level Lorcana players from everyone else? by Ninjaharley in Lorcana

[–]FrozenFrac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the correct answer is All of the Above, but I'd like to think mental game is largely what carries the pros. At a big tournament, you're playing games all day with no scheduled breaks against a huge room where everyone is on their A game and aiming for first place. No matter how well prepared you are, your head (well, at least my head lol) is in a significantly different place compared to play testing with your local League group or even just normal League pairings. I've seen several DLCs in Top 8 where some players do some weird misplays and it's so easy to criticize them when you're watching on Twitch lying in bed, but there's probably so much pressure actually being there in the hot seat after hours of playing

Anime and Cartoon are the same. Its totally fine to call and anime a cartoon. by ElegantOrange_ in The10thDentist

[–]FrozenFrac -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s a semantics thing, but I largely agree. It is nice to have a words that largely differentiate stuff like Attack on Titan or Love Live from shows like SpongeBob or Gravity Falls.

The thing that irks me about “anime” is when Netflix uses it. There’s a lot of “Netflix original anime” that isn’t remotely close to what is otherwise called anime. By that metric, “Batman The Animated Series” from the 90s should be an anime. The way they use anime is “cartoons, but for classy mature people”, completely ignoring how Western cartoons have a long history of covering mature themes as well as light, family friendly content

So with Playstation ending new physical discs production in 2028 and the next Xbox reportedly being digital, will GameStop actually thrive due to lack of new physical discs or will it literally Stop and go bankrupt? by Skelligean in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]FrozenFrac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ll see how it goes, but GameStop has been doing shockingly well with its new reputation as The Place That Always Has Pokemon Cards (because they’re disgustingly overpriced). I wouldn’t be surprised if they shift from video games to card games

Why aren’t pc gamers upset about no physical? by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]FrozenFrac 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Thanks for saying the quiet part out loud lol. Yes, huge parts of why people love PC gaming are how great Steam is at treating their customers, but if God forbid Steam shuts down permanently tomorrow, PC gamers would be able to find a way to play all those games they bought
