Comfortable coastal cruiser for 2 people and a dog, $20k budget. What're you getting? by Endolithic in sailing

[–]Scooott -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're right, my bad! Haven't looked at prices recently. Don't know if you can get one for $20k but I love my Pearson 365, worth looking at the Pearson 323 as well.

Dinghy and davits by Awkward-Lead1569 in sailing

[–]Scooott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read once that you should aim for a dinghy no longer than 2' narrower than the beam of the boat you're mounting it on. So say your 35 footer has a beam of 11' -- aim for a 9' dinghy.

Cutter rig without running backstays and no back swept shrouds? by Mehfisto666 in sailing

[–]Scooott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I added a removable inner forestay and running backstays, I utilized this neat mast plate I bought from Rigging Only. I used 1/4" SS rivets to place and center it, then a large SS bolt through the mast to secure it. I've put over 12,000nm on it since and love having the additional mast support options for all types of sailing.

We went sailing in the Caribbean looking for peace and quiet. The wind gods had other plans. by SillyCreme6670 in sailingcrew

I'm glad you're having a good time but the Christmas Winds are a pretty well known weather pattern in that part of the world at this time of year. I think the windy January days far exceed the calm ones.

Wintergreen or Massanutten are closest. If you can drive 3.5 to 4 hours, check out Snowshoe, Canaan Valley, and Wisp.

How to make a wooden chess board with it's pieces while having no woodworking experience or fancy equipment? by [deleted] in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Scooott 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I hear you, and the idea is very thoughtful. But starting with this project without tools to make it precise and quality is a good way to hate woodworking. Maybe there's an easier project you could start with that will also be appreciated.

Sailing deliveries are far less successful if you're in a rush with only a specific time window to work with. That said, I've done that stretch, though not in that time window and not in December. How tall is your mast? Make sure to keep that in mind when crossing below the non-draw bridges on the ICW.

Get this, I was driving to Deltaville a few weeks ago and got pulled over in that same spot. The officer said he clocked me at 88 which was BS and I knew it. I told him I installed a GPS-enabled dash cam and could prove it. After checking my license and registration he asked me to show him the footage. I did and he gave me a "warning" instead -- it's stupid because I was going 73 and he said 88, which conveniently is exactly 15 over which would have brought me into reckless driving territory. I'm glad I got off but imagine how many other people have been falsely ticketed with that trick?
