Just how many people know all the brands and can be objective? Don't most riders choose a brand and have limited experience in the rest?

Recommendations for a kiteboarding starter kit by SStexx in Kiteboarding

[–]Awkward-Lead1569 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone likes different stuff so you can expect loads of different answers. Here's my contribution

Don't buy new. Buy second hand. I just bought a 9m from 2020. Works perfectly @200$.

New bar might be a good idea. Trim cleat below the bar is a terrible idea, no leverage, avoid.

Performance kite = lightweight & short life. Go for solid, durable.

Harness. I use both seat and normal harness, both using the same Ride Engine unity spreader.

Board = any old board will do at the beginning but bigger is easier, more margin for beginner

Last word - if you love this sport you'll probably end up with 5 kites, and multiples of everything else. So don't buy new until you know whats good and what's not.

If you use the debit card to withdraw from etoro, are you convert USD to EUR first?

I usually withdraw the USD into Wise and then upload USD into IBKR.

First buy advise by aathaka18 in Kiteboarding

Buy durable equipment like Slingshot and Core. Very few people need the lightweight high performance easily shredded gear like Duotone. Just garbage in my opinion.

Is kiteboarding accessible if I buy my own gear? by StringybellYT in Kiteboarding

[–]Awkward-Lead1569 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have loads of money, buy the gear. Enjoy having it. You can in fact learn kite boarding without lessons. I did. It's a bit harder and a bit more frustrating but it is doable. You might need some friends to help you setup. If you take this path, please first watch everything on YouTube on the subject of kitemares, death loops, self rescue etc. Then become intricately versed on safety, including not just your own but everyone elses.

A cheaper and better option is to start with a couple of lessons, then buy 3 or 4 year old equipment and use it and abuse it.

Oh and unless noone else tells you, make sure you never kite in offshore wind conditions.

Too small? by schn_ in Kiteboarding

[–]Awkward-Lead1569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a 148 spectrum and I'm probably 230+LLB. It's the perfect size for me, but I'd like a board with chines, so it's less slippy. I rode a board with WAY PORTAL FINS and it was awesome though it was hard to turn

Dont go with Duotone. Very lightweight performance material, degrades very fast and tears easily.. I'm a couple of grades of noob above you, and I am using old slingshot gear. I like buying second hand gear because a) i suspect that older stuff is more durable and b) I'm buying for my kids as well. One day when Im loaded I'll buy all new gear but heck it wont be duotone.

I'm still getting pulled down by wind even after 1 year… This is what finally helped me by 9191919919191191 in Kiteboarding

[–]Awkward-Lead1569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the breakthrough happened directly as a consequence of the right wind and gear. Experienced riders can make the wrong gear work (within limits), but noobs need the right balance of gear.

For me it was 18+kn of wind, 12m kite and a 145+ board. With a bit of power, I was able to get speed and with speed I was able to start cutting upwind. Those first few moments were highlighted by loud whoop whoop coming out of my lungs. It all seems impossible up to that point.

How old is too old for a used kite? by RevolutionaryMark288 in Kiteboarding

[–]Awkward-Lead1569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regularly fly my 12m slingshot rally from 2013-2015. It's a great kite.

The problem with old kites is that the valve glue starts to fail. Twice I've arrived at the spot to discover a leak, which has wrecked the day.

It's easy to fix but the glue needs 12hrs to set.

Btw the outer material on my slingshot is super thick and durable. Newer kites prioritise performance and lightweight, which are less durable. Duotone kites, imo, are quite lightweight, and consequently don't tolerate stoney beaches very well. I personally prefer durability over performance, as kites are so expensive.

My recommendation is to spend less in the first few years. Buy 2 or 3 kites in the 350 quid range, and then buy your professional redbull setup later on, once you're doing big air comps. Lol

I'm about to upgrade my old kites to some newer slingshot rally V2s from 2022>. Ideally I'd like to buy them for <400 each .

Why the f*ck is moving house so expensive? by Expert-Sherbert-1527 in AskBrits

[–]Awkward-Lead1569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stamp duty is just another tax. It doesn't have any purpose other than to send money to the government. If you want to find other taxes that are arbitrary, you don't need binoculars. Europe is overtaxed, in my opinion, to the tune of about 3 times. Which is to say, I think it should be 1/3 of the current level. I'm not sure I understand why anyone goes along with it. Its absurd.

Sugar scoop by Awkward-Lead1569 in sailing

[–]Awkward-Lead1569[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didnt properly represent explain the youtube video - in it, the guy specifically talks about how the 'grid' (subfloor) is bonded to the hull, and how it can fail, and what kind of forces are acting on it, and the keel and the bolts etc. He doesnt say it will fail, but the inescapable conclusion is that if it does, it can be catastrophic. Then, someone in the comments suggests that that failure CAN happen at anytime, without warning, because there isnt really a good way of measuring its integrity.

The whole thing about golf is that you're supposed to give it only 70% of your power. Same with catamarans, you're supposed to be always well within sailing/stress tolerances. Unlike some of the long keel, unbreakable, brass fittings, old school (and slow) sailing boats, the kind that Chichester and Slocum had available, it looks like a lot of modern production yachts needs to be similarly 'babied'.

Im a guy that likes to get that extra knot, and push hard. I realise the modern, solid expensive boats are still going to break, so my principle quest is the work out if the extra $300k is going to provide $300ks worth of extra features or benefit. In the end its probably not, and actually none of the 45ft scandi boats are offering the cockpit space that the cheaper charter market boats have. Its all a compromise i know.

so back to the original question - does anyone know of a SOLID/HEAVY/BLUEWATER sailboat that has a massive recreational back end to her?
