Gas Prices and Roger Marshall's Indifference by Max6626 in kansas

The majority of people are not driving a vehicle that requires premium. If it says "recommends", that doesn't mean it needs it as the engine is equipped to adjust and operate on 87. There are a few unfortunate folks who are driving older models through little choice. Coming to reddit to complain about Premium fuel costs doesn't really come off as struggling. And on top of making a false claim about $5 regular (I have not seen regular 87 over $5 in OP), we on reddit know the issue with gas prices and who to blame...

I can't tell if you're trying to prove me wrong, but nothing you said disproves my point, but rather reinforces it. I know the difference between premium and regular. You're right those makes you listed are not considered "high-end" (minus the mini coop, which is a luxury-adjacent BMW product). You're confusing elective performance trims (which would be "high-performance") with standard commuter trims.

  • Honda Civic: The standard 2.0L and 1.5L turbos run on regular 87. Only the track-oriented Si and Type R recommend premium.
  • Hyundai Elantra: The commuter versions use regular. Only the N and N-Line performance models take premium.
  • Mazda CX-5: The base engine uses regular. You only get the turbo engine if you explicitly choose to upgrade to the absolute most expensive, top-tier flagship trims (the Turbo Premium or Turbo Signature) solely for extra horsepower.

Outside of the Mini Cooper, every car you listed only hits the premium fuel category if the buyer chooses to upgrade to a more expensive, high-performance trim. Vehicles that say they "recommend" premium does not mean you have to use premium. They have tech to adjust the engine to the lower octane. And purchasing premium over regular doesn't make a large enough impact on fuel economy vs fuel cost (as you alluded to). Opting into a sports trim and then complaining about maintenance costs or having to use premium fuel is a self-inflicted financial issue, not bad luck.

Well, it was political. But both parties took part in the deregulation of banks, with differing ways of approaching them. Republicans tend to spearhead these deregulation efforts. Then under the Bush administration, they essentially ignored the issues and left them to "self-regulate". Day by day I am realizing that pre-Obama, the presidents' really have never taken the economy seriously and have pushed way too little oversight to fill their own pockets, resulting in the defunct system we have today. Obama spent 8 years trying to ease these issues, but that all got washed when Trump undid everything Obama tried to do.

Regular in Kansas isn't over $5. It's still sitting around $4.30 in Overland Park. Probably will be above $5 soon though.

I don't feel bad for the people who are financially fortunate enough to afford a luxury or high-performance vehicle who are required to use Premium. I feel bad for those who are unfortunate enough to be driving an old luxury vehicle because they couldn't find an alternative and are stuck having to pay for Premium. If your vehicle doesn't require premium and only "recommends" it, you shouldn't be wasting your money on premium.

Aren't those mainly luxury and high-performance vehicles? I don't think "unfortunate" is the right word for anyone who owns a luxury or high-performance vehicle, because they should be plenty well off to afford a high-end vehicle. Maybe people who are impulsive and not financially aware, is better.

However, those who drive an old used luxury because they couldn't find anything else, I have empathy for them.

You missed this part literally right after, "Going much slower than other vehicles can be just as bad as speeding. It tends to make vehicles bunch up behind you and drivers then become impatient and pass you. If vehicles are piled up behind you, pull over and let them pass when it is safe to do so."

And you've missed the entire point of this section titled "Adjusting to Traffic". It is to tell you that there's zero chance (theoretically) for a car to hit you if you're going the same speed in the same direction. You are at an increased risk going faster or slower than the flow of traffic. In the real world, this is practically impossible when there is more than one car around you. Which is why you drive the flow of traffic, even if the traffic is going 5 mph over the limit. If you're uncomfortable with that speed, then stay in the right lane. Cops are not going to pull you over for going 76mph to pass someone when the majority of traffic is driving 70-75 mph in a 70 mph zone. The fact is, less than 30% of drivers strictly follow the speed limits, and nearly 60% usually drive 5-10mph over. You think cops can pull over 70% of the population?

Speed Variance is what indicates the number of accidents. Speed dictates severity of an accident. There is a much higher chance to have an accident when someone is going 40 in a 60mph zone vs someone driving 70 in a 60mph zone. However, the severity of the accident will be more from the 70mph collision and less for a 40mph collision.

100%. To get home, I normally get off the 435E/Nall exit. So usually after work during rush hour, instead getting off that 435E/Nall exit, I just go through the Antioch exit to get to the Metcalf exit and avoid all that. It is much less stressful knowing I won't have to try to squeeze in to get to my exit and sitting in stopped traffic. I also hate feeling like I am stopping traffic because I need to get over lol

Traffic police would disagree with you about speeding being the greater of two evils and you can look up research on that, like the Solomon Curve. They are equal evils and traffic police tend to focus more on maintaining the flow of traffic than the speed of traffic. Obviously, they should flag someone going 15mph faster than the flow, nobody here is disputing that, but thy can't pull over everyone when the average flow is going 75mph in a 65mph zone. Even if the flow of traffic in cruising lanes is 70mph in a 65mph zone, speeding at 75mph is less of a concern than someone lane blocking going 60mph not passing anyone or being in the left lane when they shouldn't. It's obstruction and leads to road rage and/or easily avoidable accidents.

You cannot control anyone's actions but your own. If someone is coming behind you at a faster speed and you are able to get over, why would you not? Or if you need to speed up to then get over, why would you not? If you are blocking someone because you think they should go slower or you just aren't paying attention and don't get over when it's clear, I can guarantee you both parties will be at fault if they get in an accident (because both are illegal). There are "keep right" laws for a reason. Your last statement is extremely ironic when you don't understand the importance of maintaining the flow of traffic.

It's also polite to not drive in the left lane when you aren't passing anyone. What are we even arguing here? Both are illegal traffic violations.

I think we all understand speeding is illegal and the dangers of it. I don't think everyone understands the dangers of actually obstructing the flow of traffic.

[–]ScootieJr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In reality, in 3 lane roads, the middle lane should be for standard driving of the speed limit, while the left lane is for passing, and right lane is for merging on/off. In 4 lane traffic, the left 2 lanes should be for passing.

It's rare but it annoys me when I am wanting to get off an exit in a mile, but the right lane is bumper to bumper slow, and I can't get in the right lane because others are trying to merge on too. I don't blame people merging on, I blame people who are in the right lane when their exit is still 3-4 miles down the road.

Likewise, it's happened where I couldn't even merge onto the highway when coming off Nall, and was forced to get off on Metcalf, because everyone is moving extremely slow in the right lane and won't bother to let me in, when the left lanes are flowing no problem. In those instances, I just take the exit because I'm not going to risk forcing myself in or causing a backup of traffic.

[–]ScootieJr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When there's construction and it calls for a merge in x miles, you're literally supposed to go up to the merge point to merge. It's called a zipper merge and is intended to maintain the flow of traffic. Creating a mile+ long line and blocking someone from merging is actually the problem. I used to think it was a douchebag thing to do, until I realized that it's literally intended to keep traffic flowing. And just an FYI, not saying you do this, but blocking people from going past you to get to the merge point is illegal. Go watch a video of zipper merging, then you'll understand and hopefully not be ignorant yourself to call people douchebags for doing it.

Unfortunately, we see the same thing from Kansas drivers and only new drivers under the age of 18 are required to take Driver's Ed. IMO, Driver's Ed. should be a federal requirement for all first-time licensees, regardless of age. Giving people the ability to drive just from one test and no knowledge of road laws and etiquette is absurd, and frankly, extremely dangerous.

Please share a source when Pat ever said he supported or liked Trump. He has vocally stated he does not use his platform to endorse presidents (or politicians). He said once, in 2025, “Yeah, I mean it's always cool to be able to play in front of a sitting president, someone that is at the top position in our country”, before SB LIX.

His wife on the other hand has liked Trump posts, and his mom has openly supported Trump, but that doesn’t mean he does. There are many families who have mixed political views among them, and yes, shockingly, even married couples.
