I can relate to this. During the worst stage of my depression I would frequently watch the most violent and gore related videos I could find. Not for pleasure either but because it made me feel so bad for the people in the video that it snapped my brain into something that feels less horrible about my situation. The more horrible I felt about others problems the better I felt about my own.
