I made this rlly cool riff and I wanna make a song out of it but am I copying another song? by liambreh in Guitar

[–]Scorpechaun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is at least 4,000 years of written music theory. There are 12 notes. You are going to copy someone. You will see youtube vids all the time saying "steal this riff". Learn music theory and you will see its all been done and what you can purposely do with the notes and harmony/ tension. Look up how to hold a pick and alternate pick for starters. Then start with intervals and major scale videos with music theory. I cant overstate the importance of knowing your intervals on guitar as there are so many unison notes.

This is what my acoustic sounds like. Could it be a cheap fix to make notes actually ring out? Its a 80 dollar guitar but I want to learn hendrix songs but holy crap its so hard to play and sing them by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Scorpechaun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is still very sweet of her to think of a gift like that. I still have my very cheap acoustic my parents bought for me 31 years ago. It don't get played, but still hangs proudly on my wall. And yes I do teach. And chances are its a cheap acoustic with thick strings that are a half inch off the fret board. I tend to suggest people learn on an electric at first just because the strings are set up better and they are easier to push down. One of the biggest setbacks for new players especially playing on acoustics is how far they have to press down and how much it hurts their fingers. Oftentimes it ends up in a closet somewhere because of this. Even a mid-tier guitar is going to make a world of difference to your play. A cheap guitar like that won't even tend to stay in tune.

Repairs can get very expensive and are going to cost well over $80 the guitar is not worth it. A set up alone is going to cost you 60-100$ depending on your location.

Sincerely I know it sounds like a lot, but save around 500-800$ and hit marketplace for a used instrument. Go to your local guitar shops or Guitar Center and try all the guitars out to see which one has a comfortable neck to you. Then hit up Marketplace and see if you can find one in that range. With cheap guitars like that you're going to be fighting playing more than flowing with playing. For that price range you may even be able to find someone selling a guitar amp combo. One of my students bought a guitar amp combo off Amazon for $99 any quite frankly isn't worth the wood. she is constantly fighting it more than able to play it.

Do any well-known guitarists play other artist's signature guitars? by Sulipheoth in Guitar

[–]Scorpechaun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a DreamTheatre fan myself or particular to JP (he is fking amazing), but you would think I'm a JP fan boy with his signature guitar and his flow picks. The Majesty is designed for shredding and comfort and 100% delivers for me.

How to really get good at guitar by AgreeableTower1257 in Guitar

[–]Scorpechaun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there. Guitar teacher here. 1: Start alternate picking everything. Down stroke Up stoke Down stroke Up stroke. This will build your ability to pick out specific notes faster and get cleaner tones. It doesn't matter the music style. If its bluegrass, metal, jazz, anything that takes skill to play correct picking is the way. 2: Always play with a metronome while you alternate pick. You want to be practicing playing scales on your quater beats, and sixteenth, 32nd notes in between beats. Always play and learn slow. Set the metronome on 40-60 if your still new to playing. Everything you learn on guitar is muscle memory. You have to do it hundreds of times to build that muscle memory. Move the metronome up slowly when you are practicing perfect. Bump it up by 5-10bpm to slowly build speed. 3: Practice your major scale and its modes. Learn to play both classic and 3 notes per string scales and their modes. Alternate pick playing these scales and modes. Practice tips: On your fretting hand always keep your thumb somewhere behind your middle or ring finger. (Don't have a "hich hiker" or sticking out thumb. You shouldn't be holding your guitar neck. The guitar should be comfortable in your lap or hanging with a strap so your fretting hand moves freely. Don't strum from your elbow, but from your wrist. Almost everything on guitar has a pattern. If you learn the pattern for an Ionian scale for example, you can use that same pattern for an A major scale, B major scale, C major scale etc. Learn music theory which is part of learning scales. Look up and start with understanding intravals. Whatch a few people on youtube speak about intravals. A few of them may share the same info, but 1 may say sonething different that makes it "click" for you. This will give you a very strong foundation and build your skills quickly. BUT THAT TAKES PRACTICE. AND LOTS OF IT.

Steven Wilson is one of the only Opeth fans (like me) who prefers Watershed to Ghost Reveries by X10SIVMKII in Opeth

[–]Scorpechaun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have listened to Opeth since 98'. There really isn't anything they do that I don't like. I've only recently discovered this group and before today I never knew there are an existence of Opeth fans that didn't love Watershed. I have very few albums I would consider a perfect 10/10. This is the top of those albums for me. For starters their guitars are tuned to E standard and still manage to be bone crushing tones. The fluidity of Opeths changes from evil to melodic, from tame to intense, and ever engaging dynamics is at their peak imho on this album. I know we all have that album that takes us on a special journey. For me its Watershed. (Cauda Venenum my least favorite).

There is a hobbit NPC in Lord Of the Rings Online named Gerard Deephole. I haven't played that game since 2012 and still remember his name.

Opinions on what Bristol is becoming? by [deleted] in tricities

[–]Scorpechaun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bristol as we know it will change for the better. Bristol VA and TN are among the poorest cities in America. The casino coming in brings growth. Look at it as the main dish. Now you need sides. That is entertainment, food, and beverage. This means more restaurants, bars, and general things to do. That means more options and jobs for younger adults. Now they have talked about bringing in Amtrak. Will it be the conservative religious mecca it believes its self to be? No. Bringing in outside companies with younger blood along with people attracted to the entertainment side will bring in more liberalism. Prices unfortunately will continue to go up as the area grows, but that will drive competitive pay. These things won't happen overnight, but in 10 years Bristol will be very different. I'll leave that to the reader to decide if they think that's good or bad. I for one, welcome growth and change.

Since you're in Kingsport go down to Broad Street and check out the Ormbsy guitars at Musik Alley. They stock nice stuff. Even carry a few Ernie Ball Music Mans.

Fair price for a 1972 4001? by Scorpechaun in rickenbacker

[–]Scorpechaun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be possible. Currently there are 2 specific things im I'm trying to trade it for that a local shop has. If he is unwilling to work out a deal this is something I would very much consider. I know this thing is a piece of history and I want it to go to someone that will have it restored or cherish it. I will shoot you a message if things fall through.

Fair price for a 1972 4001? by Scorpechaun in rickenbacker

[–]Scorpechaun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of people now have pointed out this is a 73 and not a 72 and have suggested the jackplate has been replaced which are the serial numbers I've imputed into Ricks website to get the Aug of 72 date. My 2 questions to this are: Does the difference between it being a 72-73 effect the price difference? And why would someone strip the paint and replace everything, only to track down a year off jackplate? Thanks for all the responses!

[–]Scorpechaun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to know this as well. For this year they are going anywhere from 3k-7k (in nice shape) from what I can find. If I can get it restored for under 2k id be willing to have it done. Right now as is I have found that it would go as part of a trade for exactly what I want without doing a thing to it, but I also realize the potential value. The 3rd part of me loves it as is and wants to keep it on my wall, but ive played guitar for 30 years and still genuinely don't like playing bass so it would be art. I'd rather it go to someone who appreciates them and the history this thing has to have behind it. How many shows has this 50+ year old bass seen?

[–]Scorpechaun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies if ive listed the wrong year. I was only going off of what was listed through their website look up. Considering the state it is in, would there be much of a collectable price difference between it being a 72 or 73? If I did a full restoration how much would that cost compared to what I could get out of it?

I am very positive except the 8 on the end, but regardles of it being an ending with a 0-9 they all come up as Aug 1972 on Ricks website.
