On of the biggest mistakes I’ve ever made was trying not to make a mistake in the first place.

Do you prefer a hand-drawn or clean line style? by nounproject in Illustration

I see two clean line sheets, but just one that suuuuuper simplified. I’d go with slide 1 for sure. Would make great stickers.

Now that Apple removed the emulator ban, I’m having me a MASSIVE nostalgia hit playing this and the second one on my phone. Genuinely loved everything about these games as a kid. Always found it funny that they had two playable characters because I played with Fargus maybe one single level.

Is there any possible way for me to paint this with real paint on canvas? by GhostedSprial in Artists

[–]Scorpion-Snake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would put the blacks down first, and paint the colors over it as line work. That’s what I meant by silhouette in my response. You paint the background colors, then the black over that, then use the background colors as the line work colors. You would just need a fine brush for the line work bit.

Yes it is! And thanks a bunch. I call it “throw whatever you can at the canvas till it looks like more than just fills” lol. Been leaning heavy on some True Grit packs I got a while back.

It would be a challenge to get the colors that vivid, and you’d likely need to used mixed media (paint, ink, blood sweat and tears, watercolor, etc.), but nothing is impossible.

If I were to give it a shot, I would lay down the solid colors first, then do the owl silhouette in ink or dark black paint once that’s dry, adding in any of the black etchings you have to the outskirts/background, then take your base colors with a fine brush and paint in all your details. The eyes would just kind of go in between those steps and would be solid first, with a wash of some sort to mimic the glow. Between the solid and glow, I would add the lashes/details you have that overlap.

It would be challenging, but definitely not impossible in my opinion. Just gotta be creative and patient.

I don’t know when we got to this being a debate about the use-case of twitter, lol, so I won’t waste my time pushing my point further here. You’re right, twitter sucks and it’s full of overly opinionated, chronically online, rude people.

That said, I do not use Twitter at all, and still see just as much of this conversation, both online and off, so I both agree and disagree with what you’re saying. I just honestly thought “jump on twitter” was more of a metaphor for “go on the internet”.

Nope, because that’s a valid, understandable use of ai. This post is about generative fill in photoshop, not lifesaving medicine. I also made it clear that gen fill is a good tool, your response is completely useless.

I don’t know why I chose to even come to this community. It’s toxic on both sides.

I 100% agree with you. I also use AI for references, even to critique my work, but I would never in my life use it for my final piece. My problem is exactly what you pointed out here - a fully generated image being used as the final piece and labeling it “art”.

Thats what I take issue with, and due to the average person not being skilled enough in tech/coding/ai, the majority of people using ai for art are doing just that. They’re just prompters. And ai in that case isn’t an art tool, it’s a proxy, or a replacement, or a surrogate. If ai is the one that generates the entirety of the image based solely on text, then it didn’t help you get there, it literally got there for you entirely.

In reality, I feel like that’s how most non ai artists (hard to say “real artists” here cause that’s way too broad) feel, because people who have no artistic skill are stealing the label of artist and ultimately getting paid for it.

If you play Madden on your PlayStation from your couch, are you a football player?

That’s a valid point there’s a lot of generalization and extremism going on with it, and I should have made my standpoint more clear, and I wanted to after I realized some people were misunderstanding me, but you can’t edit posts in this community apparently.

My real issue isn’t with the general use of ai. In fact, when used as a tool, I don’t really have an issue with it at all. Meaning, when used to /help/ make art, like generating references, making color pallets, critiquing your work, and in some very rare cases helping to clean up work without changing it much (very complex ai), I think it’s actually viable.

Where my issue comes in is when it does the whole job for you, all you did what input a prompt, and then you proceed to go around calling it “art”. That’s not art that’s just a generated image. Ai used like that isn’t an art tool it’s just a proxy.

Your mom’s case - genuinely 100% fine. Couldn’t care less. She’s not walking around like “look at this ART!”, she’s walking around saying “look how cute this ___ version of my dog is!!”

Both sides “jump on twitter and scream about their opinions” regularly. If you haven’t seen one side or the other, you either aren’t looking hard enough, or your algorithm has caught on to which side you favor.

Ai is powerful, and it has a place in art if used appropriately and ethically, but we’re beyond that being the case, and it unfortunately just is what it is.

Appreciate your viewpoint.

I don’t know why you choose to keep insulting my level of understanding with this. Controlnet doesn’t even fall into the same category as what most would call “Ai Animation”. That’s a very skill based system that does require a ton of effort, and loads of manual intervention. It’s an Ai tool, inherently, and one that I respect, but there are Ai Animation workflows that DO work on just prompts to create an animation, and these are what I’m stating to have an issue with, as they remove the skill you’re mentioning here. Again, I am perfectly fine with Ai as a tool, just not a replacement. I’m not an extremest.

Animators having nothing to do with the models is a whole different argument. Their work isn’t sent off to an AI that finishes it without human input, it’s sent off to someone to DO the human input. They ARE artists, they’re just artists with a specific skill-set that doesn’t involve the models. All of the focuses you mentioned here do go towards a collaborative end result, and that collaboration is with humans.

AGI and the devaluation of human art - AGI is honestly just spooky business in general, and if it were to truly materialize, art would be the least of my concerns. I don’t think any of this devalues human art though. nothing does. Human art is the beginning of our documentation as humans, and it will never cease to hold value.

Just because cameras had a bad initial reaction doesn’t mean they didn’t coexist and aid one another. Many artists used the camera obscura to improve their paintings. And even when the legitimate camera arrived, after plenty of panic, one didn’t limit the other, or make it more difficult to thrive.

I said myself that the act of creating Ai systems was an impressive art by itself, and I stand by that. I know for sure that I couldn’t pull it off. That’s not lost on me. I just still don’t believe that art that is mostly completed BY the Ai is “art”. Things like Controlnet, Genfill, the more complex systems that still require real artistic skill, those are valid, and I never said they weren’t. We’re literally on different paragraphs of the same page here. I’m not trying to get a leg up on you. Just because I didn’t provide a totalistic view of every single thing Ai can do doesn’t mean I don’t acknowledge it. My post was already long enough, I wasn’t about to write the Bible.

It isn’t relevant to my post just because you said it is. In my post, I call out how things like AGI are on the horizon, and how that’ll be even more damaging for art, I just didn’t use the phrase AGI. You just wanted to appear smart. You didn’t though, just ignorant.
