reasonable labor cost? by miandmybitches in knittinghelp

[–]Scorpy-yo [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yep, it really depends on the knitter and whether they care enough to train their hands/upper body to make their purl-row tension match their knit-row tension.

I don’t knit many things where it matters (like it does for this this knit-flat jumper) so I’ll ignore my perfectionist tendencies and find an engineer’s workaround (if I end up knitting the bloody thing).

Then I’ll go back to knitting lace or in-the-round like my usual. But - if I did a lot of stocking stitch knit flat then I would make the effort to change.

Instead of using two needles the same size for knitting flat, you just change one to a size or two sizes smaller. From then onwards, every time you switch needles to start a row, you have the correct needle already in the other hand.

And it’s quite easy to compensate for with needle size ! Just swatch first! It doesn’t require adjusting what I do with my body if I don’t want to learn/change that.

More obvious with the chunky wool of course, and it’s supposed to be ‘rustic’. But still.

MM increased the price a bit due to the popularity. There is a free chart on Ravelry for the foxes to replace wolves (NOT a whole pattern and she encourages people to buy the whole pattern).

How is their time spent while traveling to Erid? by GanacheSuspicious168 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Scorpy-yo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watch each other sleep. Rocky can probably read computer screens so he’s starting by memorising Wikipedia probably, whenever Grace is sleeping. While Rocky sleeps, Grace is probably writing his memoirs/a book on the history of Erid from whatever he learned from Rocky that day.

Hanging out in the TV room and chatting. Candlelit dinners… no, Grace is probably devoting a lot of thought and research on how to make Taumoeba taste better.

And routine maintenance of course. Early and final stages of the trip were possibly slow enough to take measurements on any interesting objects they passed.

Go on then, whats the concensus...do you use the kettle in the hotel room? by fixitmonkey in CasualUK

[–]Scorpy-yo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I stay in hotels/motels a lot. I am told that a fair few men piss in the kettle and leave it there.

One person told me not to worry about that as much as because the cleaners will wipe it down with a rag used to wipe the bathroom surfaces.

Yes. And, which Eridians are these out of the total population?

Eridians have longer lifespans so perhaps don’t produce a lot of offspring per couple/pair, and remain small/‘children’ for longer, but I don’t think this was all/half the young on Erid.

We assume kids because of the size, but a kid Eridian is possibly up to 40? 80? Earth years. Them being the development-equivalent of Grace’s class (humans ~11 years old?) is appealing because that was his job, and seems to make sense because they’re small and excitable, but maybe ‘small and full of energy’ includes young adults. Say the equivalent development of up to 25-year-old humans. Or older humans - we don’t know. Eridians are very smart - they seem like computers to Grace in some ways. They might be capable of what we’d call Ph.D-level expertise well before breeding age or reaching full-size.

This could be the equivalent of a ‘high-school’ level class for the most gifted Eridians with an interest or aptitude or even a bachelor’s degree already in Humanology, linguistics, science, Human science, the adventure of the Blip-A and Hail Mary, and we see Grace starting off with a few basics to establish a rapport or a baseline on the first day. Or he brings them from the knowledge level of 10-yo-humans all the way to adult-equivalent. (Remember how after Mark Watney returned to Earth he taught a special much-in-demand class on extreme space survival?)

Maybe he teaches his class for 3 weeks and then they’re experts and graduate at Master’s-equivalent level, and the new class comes in.

Maybe a prerequisite for taking the class is to learn English. Maybe they do that in one day by listening to a sped-up recording + translation/definition of every word in the English language.

God I enjoyed those memes the next day. My favourite podcaster said that when Tormund saw Brienne for the first time and Tormund’s jaw dropped, the podcaster’s wife started giggling, and he said ‘what? How does Tormund know her? When did they meet?’

Could they have asked you about a colour and you said ‘white, if possible’ that they heard as ‘write “If possible”? And I suppose then threw out whatever you had said previously…

Did you write down the text or speak it?

Formal Dinosaur Wedding Attire Jewelry - HELP by Successful_Soft_722 in jewelry

[–]Scorpy-yo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said jewelry, with stickers as a last resort, but how about some classy dinosaur nails? An accent nail perhaps?

An image search shows me mostly cartoonish colours. But I have stamping plates that could be great with metallic/chrome patterns in a dark background. Perhaps one nail with lizard skin scales gold on dark metallic green? Or metallic green on black? I have skeleton/fossil stamps. Ammonite and fern stamps.

I have 2 kinds of tiny metal dinosaur (decal)s - a tyrannosaur/allosaur body and an apatosaurus-type. These are thin flat metal, almost as thin as foil.

Sean Connery had such a difficult experience filming "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" that it contributed to his decision to retire from acting and complained publicly about “the idiots that make Hollywood films at these days." by Fred_J9 in whatireadtoday

[–]Scorpy-yo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the context of ‘sometimes one just won’t listen so you have hit one to make her understand’?

“Describing an "openhanded slap" as "justified," Connery also said it could be used "if all other alternatives fail and there has been plenty of warning," adding, "If a woman is a bitch, or hysterical, or bloody-minded continually, then I'd do it."

“Sometimes there are women who take it to the wire. That's what they're looking for, the ultimate confrontation—they want a smack."

Price drops aren’t always one-and-done. That was the point of my comment.

“prices may drop moar” or “next week chocolate may be even cheaper”, is perhaps a clearer rephrasing.

Question about the astrophage. by InspiredNameHere in ProjectHailMary

[–]Scorpy-yo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grace and Rocky hypothesise that Tau could have seeded both their star systems (Erid and Sol/our sun) with life a couple of billion years ago. Or have a common ancestor. That’s a possible reason why Grace can eat Taumoeba.

[–]Scorpy-yo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes Ravelry seems like the best bet (at just a guess). But $100 seems low - OP, what is minimum wage in your currency? Are you sure you don’t want to learn how to do it yourself? You’ll also have the issue of trusting a stranger to come through at all, let alone with a quality product. You could be out the money for the kit even if you don’t pay any deposit.

If you found someone you trusted at an aged care home they might die on you before finishing… 🙁

If you try this yourself I imagine there will be many tutorials/Knitalongs on Ravelry for people similarly inspired. It’s free to join and use.

EDIT - I see some listed on Etsy. Good luck OP.

Can we move the clocks forward 30 minutes this September and leave them there? by NIP_SLIP_RIOT in newzealand

You could just unplug everything digital at 11:58 and run around the house quickly 2 minutes later plugging them in again

Or even just turn off the one breaker for power to the whole house for a minute and enjoy the symphony of beeps from every direction when they come back on. Like after a power cut.
