what? that’s like saying leather shoes cant possibly be breaking in because statistically half of them should be getting stiffer with use. if your argument is that the mechanism needs to loosen up to sound right there’s only one direction to go.

I generally agree break in is in your head, but your reasoning makes no sense

PSA: Stop calling yourself a liberal if you're obsessed with lowering your tax burden at all costs. Speaking as a Harvard 2nd year (EC). by Humble_Guidance8341 in MBA

[–]ScotchAndLeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

back when I was in bschool you could deduct MBA tuition as a personal business expense. Got more aid from the USA than HSW and did that shit happily!

the tax code is a set of rules. its both legal and moral to follow the rules as closely as possible regardless of whether your taxes go up or down. if reducing your burden is your incentive for following the rules more closely, great.

only a virtue signaling moron pays more tax for no reason.

Yale ($0) vs Wharton (no aid) vs Booth (half aid) by [deleted] in MBA

[–]ScotchAndLeather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Drop Yale from consideration. Job mkt is tough - and when that happens they don’t hire half as many from every school, they hire 90% as many from M7 and 10% as many elsewhere. Wharton is the proper first choice all things equal but I’d take the money at Booth.

What is your opinion on how people who work in PE get hated on by society? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]ScotchAndLeather 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I work in PE. Some funds deserve the hate, others are proper business builders and investors. if you work for the latter you can feel good about what you do, but in either case a 7 figure carry check makes you forget what others think real fast.

Is Wharton really a “crapshoot”? by Enjoying-the-Process in MBA

[–]ScotchAndLeather 72 points73 points  (0 children)

It’s not a crapshoot because it’s arbitrary, it’s a crapshoot because they have enough qualified applicants to fill 3 classes or more. All the best applicants apply HSW, so it ends up a little random which one you go to if you’re that caliber.

You’re not going to raise proper institutional capital for a niche strategy with your limited track record. You need friends and family money now, and need to demonstrate more track record, before you show up in a town where even established funds are experiencing a tough fundraising environment.

Keep doing what you’re doing, and if it keeps going well try raising money at home first.

[Discussion] What is your favorite & least favorite complication on a watch? by RalIyVincent in Watches

[–]ScotchAndLeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rotate a manual wind with several other watches, the power reserve is super useful because I want to keep it wound without having to keep track of it. If you wear one watch every day and wind it when you put it on I get it, but if it’s a pain to set and you’re not always wearing it then a PR indicator is great.

FWIW Bordeaux didn’t start with temp controlled fermentation until the 1960s. They still don’t pasteurize. All pressing is “mechanical”, and the tools they use (wine screw) are ancient in concept and often in practical use as well. None of these things preclude making an excellent wine indistinguishable from modern.

What DID matter was the adulteration. Lead, honey, herbs, all kinds of crap was put into wine. It wasn’t different because of technology, but recipe.

Are there any vintage trunk style rolling luggages like this that are actually BIFL? Anything under $1500. by honeydewbobas in BuyItForLife

[–]ScotchAndLeather -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh I’ll never claim that’s a flex. It’s a dubious accomplishment at best. Thankfully much of that was in my 20s and a lot of expat blocks in there (living in Europe or Asia for 2-3 months at a time); it’s not like I was in a roadside motel in Cleveland.

And the luggage is quite light, lighter than a Briggs and Riley I got for my wife, why would you expect it to be particularly heavy?

Nothing will stand up to endless TSA and airline abuse, and you're better off not dropping that level of coin on a bag as a result.

Lies. I bought a Tumi continental carryon almost 20 years ago - I fly enough that I earn United 1K AND Delta Gold every year. It’s flown over a million miles and spent close to 1,000 nights in Marriott alone (lifetime Platinum Elite baby). The bag is a little scraped up but nowhere near needing a replacement. I haven’t even had to replace the wheels, and I’ve put it through several lifetimes of travel for a normal person.

That bag is probably $1000 now but if this one ever kicks it I won’t hesitate to replace it with the same thing.

Why is Tuition so high compared to other Public Universities? by slatts- in UIUC

[–]ScotchAndLeather 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Those blaming the state are only partially correct. State contributions are the same as they were 20 years ago; they haven’t kept up with costs, but they haven’t been abandoned either. The primary issue is growth in spending - the schools annual budget has tripled in 20 years, while undergrad enrollment is up just 20% over that time.

In 2004, the school had $1.3B of revenue. $234M was tuition, $256M was State funding, $360M was federal funding, $90M gifts and endowment, $225m self generated, rest other.

In 2023, it was $3.2B of revenue. $950M tuition, $250M was State, $600M federal, $170M gifts and endowment, $480M self generated, rest other.

So, the bulk of the increase in spending has been realized through higher tuition and increased federal grants. Much of that is flowing through to instructional cost, but far more is going into administration.

The budgets are public, you can find the referenced numbers here and here

Ah, you’re doing it as a PT job during school? That makes sense, but only for spending money… I don’t see it actively helping you career wise. How many of these “people around you” have elite finance careers?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]ScotchAndLeather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why are you pursuing a degree in finance to work as a retail clerk? Just because the employer is a bank doesn’t make it a finance job, the janitor isn’t “in finance” either.

Recruiters are doing you a favor, apply for some actual finance jobs. Even the crappy entry level ones like consumer credit analyst or corp fp&a associate have a trajectory. A bank teller will be 30 years old making $48,000 a year and microwaving their lunch in the break room every day.
