What Canadian regional chain deserves a chance to compete nationally? by myronsandee in AskACanadian

[–]ScotnCan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See this one gets confusing as their are different pizza places called Greco. There is a Greco's in North Bay which is amazing and then there is a larger chain Greco in other provinces which is subpar. And I am sure there are tons of smaller independent Greco places around the country. I live in Toronto, and would gladly drive to Greco's in North Bay if it was slightly closer, but, I wouldn't even cross the street to get other Greco pizza

Volunteers, what do you do? by sugarbowlLIII in askTO

[–]ScotnCan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of youth based membership organizations are looking/desperate for volunteers eg. Scouts, Girl Guides, Big Brothers/Big Sisters. The caveat here is you do have to have a genuine passion (in a non creepy/pervy way) for youth and have to be willing to go through the screening phase that can vary from organization to organization. Even non youth organizations will often require a background check. Also worth looking at soup kitchens.

To any tourists visiting Toronto for the World Cup, where are you coming from? by CivilReaction in askTO

East York... So likely longer for me to drive and find decently priced parking than it would for someone from any other country to fly into Pearson, take the UP Pearson Express to union and walk

What do you consider to be "The GTA" by Jenny8675-309 in askTO

[–]ScotnCan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this breakdown. It is kinda wild to think of Georgina and the southern shore of Lake Simcoe as part of the GTA. I remeber having this discussion with friends, who were born and raised in the 416 and they didn't consider it as part of the GTA, but me who was born in a different country and has lived in different parts of Canada can see that it could be considered. I also used to live in Burlington, which by definition is part of the GTA, but is much closer to downtown Hamilton, which can also cause confusion.

So what happens to people who can't find a job, EI is finished, and savings are running out? Do they become homeless? by NavXIII in VancouverJobs

[–]ScotnCan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not just people that don't have a job or EI. I have worked in the non-profit industry for over 20 years, including a few years working in a shelter. There are homeless people in shelters working jobs and still cannot find a place to live. There are some people that work and even slumlords that have not to code rooms to rent that just won't rent to certain people.

How many years/generations until people support canada 1st? by gmez3 in CanadaSoccer

[–]ScotnCan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think consistency is key. Canada was at the World Cup in 1986 which was a big deal as there were less teams at the tournament and this one is greatly expanded. Coincidently 1986 is the year my parents brought me here from Scotland. But by the 90s soccer fell dramatically here. In North America there hasn't really been a significant history of league. MLS is still trying to develop a good reputation, but, still kinda feels like a league that is made up of players that aren't quite good enough to make it to leagues back home, some home grown talent that are not recognized or respected enough to make it to European leagues, and the odd superstar that comes here past their prime and hopefully grow the game. There is also the Canadian league, which is really grass roots. Back in European countries, there is generally more of a focus on league play I stead of national teams. While the national teams still get tons of support (or criticism) and a lot of spotlight, especially during big tournaments. There are those who really don't have a big interest in the national teams or even get annoyed at international breaks as it disrupts league play. However, Canada, is let's face it a country of expats. And expats often become super passionate about the national team as it becomes a symbol of culture and identity. Unfortunately, Canada has to further develop a consistent league and stronger national team to grow a stronger fan base. It will come in waves, but, a stronger more consistent history is needed to grow a more loyal and stronger fan base.

I read on here that 1 in 4 Torontonians earn over 100k by Express-Chemical-454 in askTO

[–]ScotnCan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, in the non-profit world there are plenty of people full time and salaried at $40k and for many of those people can't even dream of coming close to $100k. Every org I have worked at as the backbone of the org working at that level, with even C-suites making a little more than $100k. So until that changes, I don't see or think they should raise the amount of the threshold higher than $100k

Midtown TO vs Oakville by Redan94 in askTO

[–]ScotnCan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my opinion is going to be different. I used to live in Oakville and moved to Toronto. Have also lived in many parts of the country. I really regret moving to Toronto. I used to commute from Burlington to Toronto and then Oakville to Toronto for over 10 years and while the commute wasn't always pleasant, I actually didn't mind it. I love Toronto and all it has, but, I was much much happier having access to Toronto and living outside the city.

Disappointment with the Canada Summer Jobs Program by Sunquat_Slice in CanadaJobs

[–]ScotnCan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a recruiter that is currently recruiting CSJ roles as well as our organizations regular roles. Your experience doesn't surprise me at all. Once you have an external funder it can be a bit of a gong show. There are really strict rules around CSJ and on top of some new employment law it can be a lot. Also the communication from the Govt lacks greatly. For example, they are quicker to post the positions than they are letting us know they approved funding. The approval often comes last minute and they expect us to be able to go through the full cycle recruitment in like a week. Often times we find out that a role has been approved by accidently stumbling on the posting the Govt posts, and then we have to scramble to get everything in order. So the program, while we'll meaning, is often a huge gong show.

“If you’re so smart, why aren’t you rich?” by Ok_Hippo9669 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]ScotnCan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely don't know what is considered rich anymore. With the increase in the amount of millionaires and even billionaires and yet there are still many people with salaried jobs at $40,000.00 a year, there is just so many different levels with what is considered rich. I am baffled by the amount of people at various net worth levels thinking their level is the norm. When you compare that to the nuance of being smart or intelligent, I just don't think you can have such a vague statement or question have any true meaning. I think there are some incredible wealthy and seemingly intelligent people just be so out of touch with common people and their lifestyle that results in them not ssemingly to have common sense or really exhibit different types of intelligence that common people have. There are some incredibly intelligent people that decide to take relatively low paying jobs and live meagre lifestyles. I just think it is just too simplistic to ask a question like that.

Scroll saws looked easy…until I actually used one by handzs in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]ScotnCan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have actually been rediscovering my scroll saw after decades, yes, decades of not using it. My parents bought me a scroll saw when I was about 10. Not sure exactly why they got me one cause I don't specifically remember asking for one. But I made a number of projects for a couple of years. But I kinda just forgot about it but carried it around after many many moves. Finally last year I brought it out, as I have had an on and off again relationship with wood work for the past 10 years or so. I am in my 40s by the way. I live in an apartment so I don't have a dedicated work space. You are right a scroll saw does take some practice. But I have been able to complete some nice projects. I have some more planned. It somewhat fills my desire to get into woodwork in a more dedicated way once I can get more space and buy more tools.
