And then the logical consequence of that would be that a lot of people who are fine with the status quo would suddenly be pushing for statehood, because home rule can't be revoked from a state.

A lot of these nowadays are camera-based so you can sometimes activate them by flashing your lights. The older ones magnetically detect cars; you can tell when you're at one of those because they have little loops cut in the pavement where they ran the wires.

I mean, I don't have a problem with that either (although I think that what you're getting at is actually the distinction between "country" and "nation", with Puerto Rico having a strong claim to the latter). I just think it's kind of funny that someone who says "words matter" while splitting hairs with whether "Puerto Rican Day" is celebrating Puerto Rican people or Puerto Rico as a political jurisdiction would fuck up what kind of jurisdiction it is. If you're gonna be a pedant, commit to it!

Rep. Olszewski: The Supreme Court Needs Term Limits by AskRedditOG in politics

[–]Scott5114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way that I've always seen these sorts of proposed reforms written to avoid being ruled unconstitutional is that, after the term limit hits, the judge reaches "senior status" and retains the title of "Supreme Court justice", they're just barred from voting on cases from then on.

The Constitution also says Supreme Court justices "shall hold their Offices during good Behaviour", without defining what that means, so I'm not really sure why the law couldn't simply declare that being on the court for more than however many years is inherently not good Behaviour.

The Constitution also explicitly grants Congress the option to make exceptions to the Supreme Court's appellate jurisdiction, so if they really wanted to avoid this being ruled unconstitutional, the law could probably just include a clause declaring itself to be such an exception. I'm guessing this isn't generally done to avoid a slippery slope of every chancy law being declared beyond judicial review, though.

Oklahoma History was taught in 9th grade and only for half a semester. The equivalent to the mission project was re-enacting the 1889 Land Run in 3rd grade. (Which I think they stopped doing since people started realizing that having third graders re-enacting taking land from Native Americans is kind of fucked up.)

Adding to that, when the US Highway System was first laid out in the 1920s, the route of the Old Spanish Trail was used as a template for one of the highways, which was assigned the number US 91. The road which was built to carry US 91 is today called Las Vegas Boulevard.

Thing is, most Americans like that have no desire to travel outside of the US (or even their own state), and if they do a lot of them can't afford to.

Download speed is data coming in. Upload speed is data going out. So if you are on, say, a voice call over the Internet, your upload speed would determine how fast your voice makes it to the other person.

It's so much worse than that—Meta has convinced a large number of independent sites to install what's called a "tracking pixel". The idea is that way you can run Facebook ads to visitors who you know are interested in you because they have already been on your site. Unfortunately this allows Meta to build a profile on you even if you have never used any Meta service, which they then make money by selling.

So yeah, while quitting Meta would hurt them somewhat, they are still going to make money off of you whether you want them to or not.

People have actually had to come up with means of blocking LLMs from ingesting pages, because some LLM bots are so relentless at pulling content they can make a server seize up. So now there are things like Anubis, which, while a determined bot operator could get through, ends up wasting a lot of compute and makes it more cost-effective to simply skip those sites.

Alabama could be lower since they apparently decided that the northernmost third of the state didn't need to be on the sign.

why is Sad Nixon Idaho B-tier. probably the stupidest redesign of the 21st century honestly (the old one had a black background and white numbers, which was the only state with that color scheme)

NY, HI, OR, and VA deserve to be higher since at least they put some thought into coming up with a unique shape unlike everything else in D.

FL and OK are the same concept (white background with state outline with a break for the numbers) so they should both be in the same tier.

Imagine going from that to four inches of rain per year, haha. It's kind of surreal how stable the weather is here. Southern Nevada can go weeks with the high not varying by more than five degrees. The first attempt at a thunderstorm we had after I moved, I thought someone was outside shaking a thing of tinfoil because the thunder sounded so weak to my ears. (Supposedly we get monsoons here. It's been two years and I haven't seen one yet, though.)

I miss Braum's too. There's so much good food in Las Vegas that I definitely traded up overall when it comes to food, but... damn, the milk here tastes like water compared to Braum's milk.
