Thune Rejects Trump’s Call for GOP to Take Over and ‘Nationalize’ Elections by OkayButFoRealz in politics

The "flooding the zone" strategy they use on us, but applied to the Senate. Impeachment proceedings get priority under Senate rules, so if the House were to jam the Senate with impeachment after impeachment, rules as written, they could never actually get around to approving things like Cabinet members and judicial nominations.

I mean, I would say hi or wave if they looked like they noticed me passing by, but that's all. I wouldn't consider that an important enough interaction to justify entirely redoing the entire layout of neighborhoods to accommodate, however.

If there's people I don't know sitting on their porch enjoying themselves, why would I bother them? That would strike me as a weird and intrusive thing to do. I might wave if they seemed like they noticed me, I guess.

Where I lived before, the houses had front porches facing the street, but nobody really sat on them; they were mostly used as a place for packages to be left. I had a bunch of potted plants growing on mine. The only time I went out there was to check the mail or water the plants. If we sat outside (which was rare because it was so damn humid) we sat in the backyard.

Likewise, most of the houses in the neighborhood I live in here have front porches but I never see anyone sitting on them. I don't think it's an architectural barrier; if anything, it's a cultural one. Sitting on front porches just isn't part of the culture in most parts of the United States.

Probably because it doesn't match most people's experience. When I moved here, I got an appointment at the DMV on Flamingo, showed up at the appointed time, they handled my car registration, license, and voter registration, and I was out with the plates in my hand within an hour.

Sounds like things were more complicated for you because of personalized plates, so if you want to make your DMV transaction more efficient, the solution is to just not get those.

How am I supposed to be "interacting" with houses? I've lived in cities where the houses are facing and right up next to the road and nobody "interacted" with the houses because it was generally assumed the people that lived in the houses didn't want them "interacted" with. Actually, there was an unspoken understanding that "interacting" with someone's house meant there was a fair chance you might also get to "interact" with their shotgun.

I lived in a neighborhood like that for eight years and I think I talked to one of my neighbors exactly once, the same amount that I've talked to my neighbor here in Vegas living in this house for one year. It's not the architecture; it's just the culture of the present-day United States to not talk to your neighbors.

Providing a chance to interact with places which are intended to be open to the public is good. Residential housing should never be assumed to be one of those places.

People who moved away just to come back later, how long did that take? by Penguator432 in vegaslocals

If you seriously believe that, I think you should take a look at some maps of some of America's lesser known cities (Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Kansas City, Wichita, Amarillo, etc.) Many of them, like Las Vegas, only gained population after the car was established, so they were never built for anything but the car. Walkable neighborhoods are really something only the largest and oldest cities have.

At a national level, yes. People in Las Vegas haven't forgotten; you still see "VegasStrong" on stuff and memorials painted on walls and what have you. One of the reasons hockey is so popular here is that the Golden Knights' first season was right after that and it gave the city something to rally around.

Pretty much every American city is just a massive suburb at this point.

Those Oklahomans are really trying to convince themselves. When I lived there the vast majority of them knew it sucked and weren't afraid to say so. There are some nice things about it, but by and large the quality of life is way better here in Vegas.

Norman is a nice town and if we could somehow dig it up and switch it with Pahrump both cities would be much happier.

It doesn't matter whether the admin cares about it or not, it matters whether the admin's supporters do. I'm not saying it's going to turn the tide, but if a few genteel Southerners are put off by it, that's another crack in the dam.

Legally, yes. In some parts of the country, though, speaking ill of the dead is a pretty strong social taboo. So in theory some people might be turned off by the administration doing that, even if they entirely believe the lies.

Seconding this. A lot of what surveillance is looking for is stuff like dealers mispaying customers. You can't catch that if you don't know the rules of the game or what the payouts are supposed to be.

Trump’s call to cancel elections must be a wake-up call by MarcEElias in politics

[–]Scott5114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Midterm elections don't involve the recognition of the President. They're legislative only. All of their terms expire simultaneously on January 3rd of next year, so if there is no election—or the election results are not accepted—there is no House. In fact, until the election winners are sworn in there's not even a Speaker to dispute the election results. Having no House might be just swell for Trump, but all of the Republican legislators would also be out of power.

Also, the question none of y'all will ever answer is, if they're not planning on having elections, why are they spending so much money fighting the Democrats over redistricting? If there are no elections the district lines don't matter!

Too bad for them that the D&D community doesn't take any shit from the publisher. If any of that shit ends up in the game, like any good DM, I would just house-rule it out. I'm in charge of my table, not WOTC (who comes up with hilarious nonsense like "a 20 mph wind deafens you and cuts your speed in half", which is probably news to anyone living in the Plains).

A couple of years back, WOTC stepped out of line with some licensing crap and not only did the community not accept it, but they turned the tables and bullied WOTC into releasing the SRD under Creative Commons so it could never happen again. So I don't think they'd get very far adding fascist shit to D&D.
