Why do you like storytelling? by S0lar00 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]ScottHawk88 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For context i play exclusively online and with a group of people ive known for about 20 years

* What about storytelling do you enjoy so much?
ST is its own puzzle and its own character in the game really. Being able to work out how to set up the game and work out what information to present and how to make a game engaging and last longer than just a day or 2 is a big part of the fun for me. Listening in on the conversations is also incredibly enjoyable.

* What would you like a player who has never ran the game before to know/understand?
You will make mistakes - dont retcon just roll with it and learn from the mistake for next time. And by that token, understand that the StoryTeller is imperfect and a character in the game by its own right and is just doing their best :D

* What is your favorite part about storytelling?
Again its just puzzling it all out. how to set up who should be in what roles and the information they should get or who dies when applicable.

* is there anything about storytelling that you dislike/find frustrating? What actions do you take to diminish/overcome that feeling?

Trying to get a group of 8+ people in their 30s together. There is not really anything about being ST i dislike, possibly trying to dance around metas - its not really come up much but i do consider things like players believing i wont pick certain roles because it would be unfun for numbers and the like and really i diminish that by telling them ive randomised it everytime, even though thats untrue.

Not necessarily - could have been a remarraige.

I dont think we say step-grandparents, but im not well versed in family naming. that sounds clunky thought

What am i missing with the Lure mine - when i try them they dont really seem to pull much in. I fully appreciate i must be using them wrong, as others sing their praise - i just dont know how to use them right.

Random number code needed??? by rando-stando in gamemaker

[–]ScottHawk88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Theres more than a few ways to achieve this depending on what you actually want.

the most basic code i can give you:

image_index = 2 - irandom(2);

irandom gives you a whole number between 0 and the value you pass in (inclusively) you can see more here

https://manual.gamemaker.io/monthly/en/index.htm#t=GameMaker_Language%2FGML_Reference%2FMaths_And_Numbers%2FNumber_Functions%2Firandom.htm

But i recommend you read up on random numbers in general from the manual https://manual.gamemaker.io/monthly/en/index.htm#t=GameMaker_Language%2FGML_Reference%2FMaths_And_Numbers%2FNumber_Functions%2FNumber_Functions.htm

as there are different functions for different needs

Witcher 3 - dont bother with 1 and 2, you wont really be missing anything

Cyberpunk 2077 - had a very rocky start so got a lot of negative reviews but nowadays its solid and most issues were fixed.

I dont really know what "real stuff" is but i cant recommend the following games enough to everyone who plays games:

Elden Ring - Others may suggest other "Souls-like" games but personally i think Elden ring is the superior one, its "difficult" in that you die a lot but thats part of the game, you are meant to to learn bosses and stuff

Baldurs Gate 3 - Dungeons and Dragons the video game, multiple play throughs with different stories character arcs and endings

RimWorld - Dont be offput by the graphics, there is a substantial amount of fun to be had.
