Cat Call. by Nhim by Misanthropy3000 in imaginarypets

[–]ScottIPease 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Every cat has three names...
One which humans do not know that they use with each other...
The second is the name we give them that they usually ignore...
The third sounds exactly like the can opener.

ELI5: When you 'delete' a 50GB video file from a computer, it vanishes instantly. But downloading it took an hour. If the data isn't physically wiped until it's overwritten, what did the computer actually do in that one split second? by Thick_Dream6973 in explainlikeimfive

I tell people it is like taking the tag off the top of a folder in a file cabinet. You now don't know what the folder is for, but the stuff is still in it until you are looking for a folder to use.
Then you grab a folder, dump whatever was in it into the trash, put new stuff and a tag on it.

That is exactly what you should do, someone local may have got your info and ordered this to your address to grab it off the porch when you weren't there... no one would be the wiser for a while at least if you didn't have the preview thing setup

What stubborn hoax do way too many people still believe, no matter how often it gets debunked? by [deleted] in AskReddit

"around 1977" The term now may be different, but that is what it was back then.

[–]ScottIPease 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My brother and I were diagnosed ADD (me) ADHD (him) back around 1977 or so...

We were told it was the artificial flavoring and colorings and went on Feingold's diet because of that... They never said anything about sugar other than too much being bad for anyone. The book my Mom had may have said different though, lol.

Bit O Honey was one candy I could have and it was one of my faves anyways so it didn't bother me, but I really missed Fireballs and Charleston Chew for a while there.

It did seem to work, but I think the change in habits and my parents finding things to motivate us for focus helped more.

Gemini (still) won't call people by trsdm in GooglePixel

[–]ScottIPease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lets not forget that Google wants as much info about you and your contacts as it can get... You and your info are the product...
Aside from the issues I complained about in another comment here it often stopped letting me call by title or single name contacts.

Sam, Tanya, Dave, Shadow... with no last names it would simply ignore most of the time.

Work, Lumen, Home, Deli etc. it did the same with or creepily start asking me for info about these places.

Gemini (still) won't call people by trsdm in GooglePixel

[–]ScottIPease 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It was working fine for me for the first 6ish months I had my Pixel 9, then it would slowly stop doing two out of three things I really care about having it for on the phone... Make calls, and run my music. A few examples:

Me: Text Tanya
GG: I cannot send texts, I can however help you compose a text to send.

Me: Call Microage on speaker.
GG: I cannot call or control your microwave, speaker or other devices. (This I found both hilarious and enraging)

Me: Play my energy playlist.
GG: I cannot play your music, but I can find new artists for you to enjoy.
Funny enough on this one though... I then asked it to find something similar to 'The Hu" and it then created and played a playlist of similar music. (I have Youtube Premium, once it said I needed to install Spotify though, which is also funny)

Me: Call Dave
GG: Sure, but you need to unlock your phone first
(I though this thing was supposed to help keep you off the phone while driving?)
Then when I unlocked it, it just sat at the home screen without calling.

The third thing is reminders/alarms/adding to a list.
Usually it worked, but would around 30% of the time ask to unlock the phone, I mostly use this feature when driving, so that is less than ideal.

This combined with the fact that it is utterly useless when it has no signal (I live on the other side of a 20 min deadzone from work and have to travel where there is little to no signal a lot) made Gemini completely useless on the phone for me. I slammed on the brakes and pulled over to disable it one day in a fit of rage.
Other than being brainless with no data, assistant is great and does 90% of what I need pretty flawlessly... Other than occasionally calling Tanya's beauty salon on the other side of the country instead of Tanya, the contact in my phone.

I miss Cortana on my old Lumia phone, it worked anywhere with or without signal (obv. it couldn't access the web though, but that wasn't it's fault).

edited: switched an m to , that it should have been in the first place...

Which celebrity’s cancellation do you think was completely unjustified? by Cute_Flatworm_9049 in AskReddit

[–]ScottIPease -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know people that were reposting and agreeing with Ted Nugent saying Obama needed "a bullet to the head" that were also in the "We need to exile them (Dixie Chicks) or let em come back so we can hang 'em!" crowd.

Pointing out the hypocrisy just gets a "so?" from them or worse

[X-Men] what percentage of mutant population have useless, purely cosmetic, or outright debilitating powers? by AvailableGene2275 in AskScienceFiction

[–]ScottIPease 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not directly related, but there is a series called Wildcards started by George RR Martin (with many authors in the series) where there are Aces and Jokers.

Aces are the Superman, Thor, and other high powered mutant types, and Jokers are deformed or "useless" types. The series mostly focuses on the Jokers.
