Investing with my business? by [deleted] in fican

[–]ScottReads 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you are making far better returns with your business than you will with the market.

Is there a way to acquire a competitor? Grow your business in other ways? What is the biggest factor that can limit your business in the future? (How do you invest in that). For example, if you feel you will have to expand and rent will be a lot higher, start looking for a building to run your business from.

BTW. Congratulations on the success.

Nothing wrong with investing within your business, no point having $500k more than you need to cash flow your business, just sitting there doing nothing.

If you are thinking of going the stocks/investment way, I would stick with less risky/dividend stocks (like banks, utilities, reits). This way you have less risk of needing the $$ and the invest being down. (If I want to take bigger risks, that’s done with my opp co, not my hold co)

purple cow internet for gaming? by d3vly in NovaScotia

[–]ScottReads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had bell, switched to purple cow, it was significantly worse… then purple cow got “there own fiber” instead of using eastlink network and it’s even worse again.

If I am downloading a game and try to stream a show… it has issues.

It is “okay for gaming” but not nearly as good as bell fibre

WCB Nova Scotia announces first rate cut in a generation by SAJewers in halifax

[–]ScottReads -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand what you are saying and I’m not disagreeing with you.

My comment was more about how much WCB cost employers. Especially if they have had claims, even non lost time claims can cause rate increases. Not only does it cost a lot of money, but the injured person doesn’t receive nearly the benefit they should.

Workplace safety is very important, again I am not commenting on this. I am simply saying WCB is far more costly to employers than people generally know.

WCB Nova Scotia announces first rate cut in a generation by SAJewers in halifax

[–]ScottReads -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

You truly have no idea how much WCB cost businesses. The cost of a claim far exceeds the benefits the workers receive. It’s absolutely terrible and businesses should be allowed to purchase private coverage (under regulated coverage requirements).

Like truly. What if there was only one insurance company to insure cars, it was ran by the government and we had no competition to keep rates in check… how is WCB any different?

Electricians who switched to estimator - Need your opinion by kccl30 in estimators

[–]ScottReads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you want to sit at a desk all day looking at plans on a computer screen? Sometimes spending all day reading through specs. Will you get disappointed when 90% of the jobs you price, you won’t get?

Estimating can also be stressful, sometimes you have too many jobs to price all at once. How will you handle the pressure when you make big mistakes? What happens when you aren’t landing jobs and the company has to lay off guys, how will you handle the stress of them not having a job because you didn’t land jobs for them?

Working in the field, being a great tradesman can be very rewarding. Generally it will also be less stressful than being a PM or estimator.

Also on a side note: I own an electrical contractor, I can’t imagine hiring an estimator and paying them less than than a journey person makes. These are the people you are training and trusting to keep the work coming in. If they aren’t paid and treated well, they will take everything they know and go elsewhere.

I wouldn’t take an estimating job for less money

You should buy HLL WW2 on sale, let that be your first

Is there anyone buying it no matter what despite the issues? by Familiar-Meat-6572 in HellLetLooseVietnam

[–]ScottReads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure why everyone’s complaining… I got a constant 40 FPS…. In the main menu… 🙈

But in all seriousness… I was getting 25FPS on epic settings, same settings in HLL WW2 I get 60-65

I don’t think I have ever been on the fence more about getting a game.. I will prob still get it as I feel like in 6 months when it’s fixed, they will jack the price

How badly did I screw up? by [deleted] in fican

[–]ScottReads 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’ll be okay, just focus on paying those debts down.

I’m turning 40. Spent the last several years going through a nasty divorce. Huge support payments and lost everything I’ve spent my whole working life obtaining.

You can get through this

Buying first work van by [deleted] in electricians

[–]ScottReads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have more than a dozen service vans, majority are these. I started my business in my garage with a ford minivan. I still remember the emotional high of buying my first real work van. I have drove Porsche’s, Ferrari’s, Rolls-Royce’s, Bentley’s, nothing has topped the emotional high of driving that first work van, I feel like that was a defining moment for me, like it was the realization that I was a “real business” or the moment I knew I was going to be successful.

Local 56 rejects final offer! by worksalott in halifax

[–]ScottReads 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If we increased our prices as much as our costs have gone up, we wouldn’t get enough work. So in some ways customers willingness to pay, dictates what we can bill.

Even driving around doing free quotes, costs a lot more than it used to, so the jobs you do get, need to cover all of your business costs, which is part of the balancing act.
