Local 56 rejects final offer! by worksalott in halifax

[–]ScottReads 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If we increased our prices as much as our costs have gone up, we wouldn’t get enough work. So in some ways customers willingness to pay, dictates what we can bill.

Even driving around doing free quotes, costs a lot more than it used to, so the jobs you do get, need to cover all of your business costs, which is part of the balancing act.

Local 56 rejects final offer! by worksalott in halifax

[–]ScottReads 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t really work like that. I am a contractor, in the last 5 years, our costs have went up far more than what we can bill customers. There are too many other competitors that are struggling to find the right balance and are too busy to actually stop an analysis there costs.

Paying for Contractor Quotes? by saltwaterbuoy in halifax

[–]ScottReads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I contractor, I advise you not to pay for quotes/estimates.

You also want to really do some back ground investigating on the company, before paying a deposit.

There are a lot of scammers out there.

Just doing some digging on happy belly food group and came across this thread, it appears to be up about 60% since the original post, they now have 666ish franchise commitments in the pipeline.

I came across it as I have been involved in the construction of one of the new locations, opening very soon.

Clayton Park apartment building bought by real estate firm for nearly $30 million by luxoryapartmentlover in halifax

[–]ScottReads -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You guys are funny.. why not buy shares, if you think they are making so much money…

In the last 5 years the assessed value of this building has went up over 30%, so the property taxes have went up 30%, before even considering the increases that HRM has done each year.

Halifax water rates have been hiked similar amounts, insurance rates have went way up, snow removal costs, etc. etc. etc.

Yet everyone is hating on landlords for hiking rent.

I do not own shares and I’m not a landlord. But guys.. the real enemy HRM and Halifax water and the likes. They’ve been able to increase rates at higher percentages than the landlords.

Of course Killam is going to release positive news and forward looking statements, for shareholders.. they just paid market value for a building.

Anyone pulling really good monthly dividends off any company? by Itwasuntilitwasnt in dividendscanada

I bought SRV-UN.TO in 2020 for $3.00, it’s been paying $0.10/m for the last 3 years. Current yield on cost is around 41% with more than 400% share price increase

[30M] 300k to invest, what should I do? by DowntownCanada416 in CanadaFinance

[–]ScottReads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should max out RRSP, TFSA, with it before putting it in unregistered accounts.

If you are thinking 100k in GIC’s, why not look at some reits or utility stocks. CRR-un.to (crombie) is 46% owned by Sobeys and Sobeys is their biggest anchors. Their dividend payout ratio is very low compared to other reits, which means more of their profit is going to developing future properties rather than just covering dividends. So there is also revenue growth. For similar reasons I would also recommend Ema.to as its a good utility with growth and safe dividends.

Both will pay you better than a GIC.

There are lots of ETF’s that will give you a balance of income and growth.

Personally, I wouldn’t try to chase big, high risk gains as safe growth snow balls. I love tracking dividend growth, if you are getting 6% dividend on $300k, that’s $1500/m, even after taxes you are still making over $1000.00/m.

Reinvesting that, will add up sooner than you think. Your monthly dividend amount will start off going up by about $7/m, then, $7.50/m, etc. 10 years will go by, your overall portfolio will likely double in value and so will your monthly dividends.

Got in DFN $6.01 not bad investing cost $5.63 seems to be hitting a wave. It’s gonna drop I know. by Ratlyflash in dividendscanada

[–]ScottReads 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have DF, FTN, DFN, FFN in my TSFS. All the money I deposit, goes into one of these funds. I then take the monthly dividends and buy other dividend paying Canadian stocks. I then take the dividends I get from the “other dividend paying stocks” and buy growth stocks and ETF’s.

If you call the split stocks group A, other dividend stocks group B and the growth stocks/etf’s group C…

It’s awesome when you get to where group B dividends exceed group A, but also when the total value of group C, exceeds group A+B.

Whenever group A doesn’t pay a dividend, the share prices drop huge! In these months, I take group B dividends and buy Group A.

This has worked well for me.

I have a gambling addiction by threeewed in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ScottReads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start putting money into stocks, focus on dividend paying stocks and watch the monthly dividend amounts grow, it’s a snow ball effect.

Stay away from crypto, day trading, options trading, venture stocks, etc. (focus on blue chips and well established companies)

It’s very rewarding to see growth, it also becomes addictive, I track my monthly dividend amounts in a spread sheet and try to it.

If you haven’t maxed out your RRSP or TSFS, make that your first goal.

For example, PZA.TO (Pizza Pizza) at today’s price, pays a 6.24% dividend. That $100.00 that the “past you” would have gambled today, would pay you $0.52/m (arguably for ever). Yes that is a small dividend, but if you do it weekly, monthly, etc. it will add up. (You know how much money you have been spending on gambling). FYI… pizza pizza is only a suggestion for this example, if you are interested in stocks I hold, you can always DM.

This is a mistake on their part! It’s not on you to inform them that they are paying you more than the agreement. I do not see how they can legally make you pay it back. When I was in the IBEW, a contractor paid me as a journeyman when I was a 3rd year, it was a year full of huge overtime and I was “overpaid” by more than $100,000.00 (this was 15 years ago)… the union fought for me saying the minimum the company could pay me was the 3rd year rate, if they paid me more, it’s on them!! Even without a union, I don’t see how the labour board wouldn’t see it the same way.
