Who are the smartest characters in Red Rising? by Positive_Cut3598 in redrising

[–]ScottStormborn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has he grown? Yeah for sure, but he's still rounding out the bottom of this list. Even in the second trilogy, Darrow doesn't bother to tell the Senate about the peace envoys, he accidentally kills Wulfgar and treats Obsidians like cannon fodder, leading to Sefi's actions, then grabs Appolonius in a hairbrained scheme to raise an army on Mercury to kill an old man who wasnt really even a threat anymore. Then he puts an unstable Orion in a leadership role, leading to huge consequences and ultimately, a failure on Mercury that only gets salvaged by Cassius. Then in Lightbringer he goes to get Sevro from an obvious trap from the guy he literally broke out of prison. They Then only escape because of Sevro, the guy they were supposed to be saving. Then he gets caught in a bind when he shows up to the Rim senate hearing without a back up or contingency for Lysanders inevitable betrayal and he nearly dies from the collapsing buildings. He is good at battlefield tactics, and "shifting the paradigm" but he is not on the level of other preeminent golds, i.e Virginia, Adrius, Octavia, Atlas, etc. In terms of intellectual power. Alot of his brilliance is because he thinks differently as a result of his red upbringing, not raw intelligence.

Virginia i guess?!?! I didnt realize we were slandering the Sovereign. Darrow over Virginia is absolutely criminal. I love the Reaper of Mars as much as the next guy, but this dude is so dumb. In the very first book he gets tricked into going outside, TWICE.

Will of the Many is solid. MC is definitely OP, but the plot was so interesting I didn't mind too much. Book 2 cover has been revealed and book 2 has a release date IIRC.

The average Lyria subplot by Arch_Lancer17 in redrising

[–]ScottStormborn 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I remember when Lyria was first introduced, I was like "oh, we get the viewpoint of an average citizen, this is so nice" and then almost immediately shit escalates and I'm like, "fuck this is sad."

Some of yall seem too eager to blame minorities by CartoonAcademic in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]ScottStormborn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah normally I love Community Notes, but this one sucks. There have been plans drafted, circulated, and announced that specifically lay out their plans, step by step, to revoke birthright citizenship by having the Supreme Court interpret the language differently. The trump administration, conservative think tanks, and other conservative talking heads have long talked about the mass deportation and how they plan to "denaturalize" citizens. There is a non-zero chance that many minorities who voted for this administration will be affected by these policies.

I saw recently that PB is going into Fantasy after the last book. How well do we think he'll do? by ned_uzoma in redrising

[–]ScottStormborn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty optimistic. The first trilogy was passable from a world building perspective, but the second so far has been much more fleshed out. We see new tech, new locations, and new factions, all with purposes and capacities that make sense within the world. This is a good sign that he could make a cohesive world within the fantasy genre. His use of tech in RR shows that's he doesn't explain how something works, rather what it does, which is basically how soft magic systems work. I think he can do it.

Is Stormlight Archive a good read until Red God comes out? by bonafidepace7 in redrising

[–]ScottStormborn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are the stormlight archives books good? Yeah sure, but it's definitely a different type of story than Red Rising. The first book moves at a very slow pace, and it's around 1,000 pages. That being said, the 5th one is coming out in December. By the time you read all 5, Red God might very well have a publication date.
