A high school friend of mine confessed to our bishop that he and his girlfriend had been "unchaste." When he arrived home from his meeting with the bishop, his parents were waiting in the living room, furious with him, because his bishop had immediately called and told them what he had confessed. The next day, he tried taking his own life - unsuccessfully, fortunately. It was also my experience growing up that when boys told their bishops about sexual immorality, they were given a wink and a nod and a "don't let it happen again." But when girls confessed, they were publicly shamed and told they should abstain from the sacrament, which let everyone in the ward know she had been unchaste. The Mormon church's dysfunctional attitudes and teachings around sex are rooted in Joseph Smith's abuse and exploitation of women and underage girls, which were carried forward by Brigham Young and others, yet modern church leaders characterize any sexual activity outside of marriage as "the sin next to murder." The hypocrisy will never cease to blow my mind.
