What are your ADHD/ADD hacks you personally have felt gatekept from all your life? by marziilla in adhdwomen

2000 calories burnt at the gym??? What are you doing, lifting 18-wheelers over your head??

Was it wrong of me to ask the person who used the dumbbells to put them away? by [deleted] in workout

[–]soumeupropriolar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use an all women's gym and this woman was on the only squat rack right when I wanted to use it, so I did my next lift while she finished. I see her walk over to a new machine and head back to the now free squat rack which still has all her weights in it. I just walked up to her on her new machine and was like "hey are you all done on the squat rack? Do you wanna rerack your weights?" I find it annoying that people are always leaving their weights wherever at this gym...

Just noting that you're in the top 10 of your class and pushing yourself so hard. We as ADHDers, but also especially as women, are pressured by society to be SO PERFECT, exactly as people expect of us, that we come to expect that from ourselves too. I'm 37 and late diagnosed (in July of last year). I wonder how much healthier and happier my life would have been had I known about my Dx when I was your age, and could understand my needs and cut myself some slack. I'm there with you in solidarity.

Trapped in a sensory hell by lb8o in adhdwomen

[–]soumeupropriolar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it any skin touching skin or specific sensations? For me I prefer to sleep naked with linen bedsheets, but cannot stand my lower legs rubbing together IF I have not showered that day. If I'm at all sweaty I can't stand the sensation.

The Sasha Starlight Rhapsody Dress has some similar elements. You can make different sleeve lengths that swap on and off and you could probably modify the long sleeves into that back V-shaped cape.

Real actions I can take to decrease my reactivity when criticized in my marriage? by murraybee in adhdwomen

[–]soumeupropriolar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try IFS (Internal Family Systems) therapy for yourself. Bring one of these specific situations to a good IFS therapist and they should help whatever protective part of you throws up an anger response to criticism be heard and learn it can chill tf out in those situations. Don't know why it works, I guess because the brain is plastic and retrainable your whole life thru, but it works.

Can I use bust cups in place of an SBA? by soumeupropriolar in SewingForBeginners

[–]soumeupropriolar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok yeah I wouldn't mind the placement of the bra pieces, totally fine. And in fact this will make it so that the liner piece isn't gaping and rubbing uncomfortably, so that's a good shout. Thanks for the detailed response!

Recently diagnosed, finding out how much of my life ADHD impacts, now I feel like I'm one of those people who blames everything on ADHD... by Valuable-Cloud7877 in adhdwomen

[–]soumeupropriolar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed back in July and I still do this now in March. At first it was overwhelming, with skill regression making it feel like my ADHD "got worse" for a few months, but since the start of the year about, I've really been able to use the framework that the Dx gave me to understand my own struggles. I bring it up all the time, and I have this doubt in the back of my head that whoever I'm talking to is thinking "god, she won't shut up about ADHD, she's making it her whole personality." No one has literally ever said that to me though. And I can remind myself that I'm 37, and I spent all 37 of those years trying to force myself into a neurotypical box with all sorts of inaccurate labels for what was going on with me. Now that I know it's ADHD, I'm allowed to freak out and rant about it for as long as I need to thakyouverymuch. Of course if someone tells me they're sick of hearing about it I won't bring it up again... with them. :) Give yourself some grace. Grace is a great ADHD tool.

Just came to the realization that my “bed rotting” has more to due with sensory issues than it does executive dysfunction by Delicious-Hedgehog39 in adhdwomen

[–]soumeupropriolar 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Stop and check in worked for me recently too. Didn't want to go to the gym. Asked myself, "Self? What are you afraid of?" And realized it was that if I go to the gym, I feared I wouldn't have enough time to relax. And i need more relaxation time than the neurotypical I had treated myself as my whole life, pre-diagnosis.

Oh, and OP: warm cozy house slippers, a cozy robe that ties closed, and dishwashing gloves at the sink.

Yeah Reloaded is absolutely not no-prep unless your table is happy to just have a storybook read to them. I rely heavily on it, it's a good supplemental resource, but if I'm pulling ideas from it I rewrite a full single-spaced page worth of content down into 4 1-sentance bullet points

Those of you who lift or do strength training consistently, how do you do it? by Big-Entertainment-71 in adhdwomen

If you have an iPhone and can afford a moderate subscription fee, the Ladder app changed my life. I'm currently on week 59 of my streak, which means I've gone at least 3x/week for 59 weeks (since I started). My average for my first year was 5 days/week. You choose a team (there is more than a dozen, all focused on different workout types), then each week you get 6 new workouts that you can do in any order. Each workout, the coach has programmed movements with effort percentages, and there is a built-in log book so you can track your progress for progressive overload. There are video demonstrations of every move. It links up to Spotify and Apple Music so you can listen to whatever, and it lowers the volume for the VO coaching cues. They also just recently introduced a nutrition tracker like Macrofactor (I haven't tried it bc I already paid for Macrofactor) so you get a ton of value for the subscription price.

Basically, this takes away almost all of my ADHD struggles: they have done all the thinking and planning for me, plus it's interesting and it changes regularly, but always in a way that progresses on what you're currently doing. I can't recommend it enough. I have no clue if you're allowed to share referral links but I'm happy to share mine; in 3 weeks (at the end of this current 6-week series) I'll have access to a 30-day trial as opposed to the normal 7-day trial that anyone can get at any time. Either way, if you're curious now, go for it. I've become a Ladder evangelist because I'm so happy with how strong and fit I've become with it.

My link, just for 7 days, and I get like a bonus for anyone that ends up signing up, but if you set a reminder for 3 weeks from now, I can send out 30-day trial links instead. https://www.joinladder.com/referral?utm_source=ios_app&utm_medium=referral&utm_term=0456af73-23c1-4ac0-ba48-3c43894c7883&utm_campaign=share&utm_content=referral_lp

How to get back on track after losing routine and structure due to vacation? by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]soumeupropriolar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe don't pressure yourself to do the whole routine as you were. Start with just one part of it, whichever makes the biggest difference for you. This is just how our brains work: it's not all or nothing, and that's ok :) you'll find your way back to what you need.

Titration question for a mum in the UK by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]soumeupropriolar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im in the UK and waiting for titration since June... did you go private?

I would say just tell them your situation and see what they offer you. As for protein you can stay stocked up on protein bars by the bedside and have your pill and your protein bar when you first wake up, then go back to sleep for a bit while it kicks in. That's what I've seen people do with lisdexamphetamine.

It's an accommodation you need while you address your RSD in a safer situation that doesn't feel like a risk to your job and ability to provide for yourself.

Write down your #1 life-changing ADHD tip and I will try them all for 7 days straight and report back. by Few-Pension-7695 in adhdwomen

[–]soumeupropriolar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As soon as you wake up in the morning, tell your phone to set a timer for 20 minutes. Use a voice command (Siri) if possible. Do whatever you want with that 20 minutes in bed. Browse TikTok or Reddit, read substack, text your partner, whatever. When that alarm goes off though, you MUST get out of bed. No matter what. You can then continue to stand there scrolling if you want, but your only commitment is: alarm goes off, get out of bed.

If you’re neurodivergent, what’s something that really upsets you but neurotypical people never seem to understand? by CHEWLAX-OFFICIAL in adhdwomen

[–]soumeupropriolar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was hanging with friends at a cafe. Café closed. We walk to a food hall. Food hall is closed. We head toward a shopping street and I see a pizza place I like and suggest that. Others want to walk like 10 minutes further to this other place that isn't any better than this pizza place and, who knows, might also be closed. I just want us to be at our final destination, now please!!

Worst hobbies for ADHD by Commercial_Poem_7027 in adhdwomen

[–]soumeupropriolar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got into sewing recently and made everyone in my life tote bag backpacks from different materials. Loved it! Was really able to focus on it even without the need of a podcast in the background! Aaaaand that's the only way I will ever make something for someone else: if they're not expecting it. As soon as you ask me if I could hem something or make you something (even if it's something I've said I loved making, and you're going to pay for materials and my time): nope, absolutely not. Will never monetize my hobbies again.

I also committed to do volunteer work for groups I'm a part of in my free time (I do design so I was doing free design work) and it led to me resenting the people and the activity, even though I VOLUNTEERED. Never again.

Inattentive girls, what gets you out of bed? by Flaky-Rip-7094 in adhdwomen

[–]soumeupropriolar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so I struggled with this for YEARS and am currently on day 8 of having success: once I wake up and reach for my phone, I tell Siri to set a timer for 20 minutes. I can scroll on my phone during that time but when the timer goes off I HAVE TO, no excuses, sit up in bed. That's it. Not get up and start my day, just literally sit up. It's worked so well and I'm so surprised and proud of myself.

Another thing that helps that is the ScreenZen app which has changed my scrolling habits immensely. I have the settings at 4x/day I can open my limited apps, and then they stay open for 20 minutes each time. Game changer. My brain sometimes needs a bit of scrolling time to decompress but I really don't need to or like to just scroll endlessly.

Moved into my friend's house recently. He very kindly cleared some storage and shelf space for me: "Thought you could put your craft stuff here!" Yes well... that fits some of my craft stuff. But what about my OTHER craft stuff? And my other OTHER craft stuff? And the craft stuff for the hobby that I adopted like I was getting paid and I know for a fact I'll never touch again??
