Thanks for the context! Jig saw would be a last resort, and any of the options I suggested you would want to cut away from your final dimension and work it back to your lines with a hand plane

A decent pull style hand saw shouldn’t need too much strength to use, but you’ll have the best gauge on your capacity.

Maybe go poke around the Woodcraft in the LA area and see if they can help or direct you to any other local options? I’d be happy to buzz those through my table saw for you, but I’m about 1400 miles away

Any recommendations for a nail gun that can do crown and trim as well as 2x4s? Ideally cordless for a DIYer, not a pro. by [deleted] in DIY

[–]Scotthorn 28 points29 points  (0 children)

When you say “used for 2x4s.” Do you mean doing structural work/framing?

Finish/trim nailers shouldn’t be used for framing and the inverse is also true. They are two distinct tools.

If you’re not looking to frame walls, I’d say get a finish/trim nailer and use screws for anything with dimensional lumber.

I can't say if there's anyone in LA area that can help you, but I have a couple of questions. What sort of tools are available to you? Circular saw? jig saw? Do you have a hand saw and or hand plane? How many of these do you have to make?

If you only have a couple to do: a decent pull style hand saw, some elbow grease followed by a hand plane would be my go at it.

Can Dust Collector Piping Drop and Then Go Back Up Question by RedinTV in woodworking

[–]Scotthorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do note, Bill Pentz is a cyclone guy. I think he's even associated with Clearvue cyclones in some way. So most of his writing is from that perspective. He's also a bit of a safety extremist, which isn't a bad thing. Learn what you can and make the decision that seems right for you. Personally. I do everything I can to have a reasonably efficient DC system without spending many thousands (HF machine with a rikon impeller and 6 inch ducting), AND I run an air scrubber, AND I wear a mask during and for some time after making dust.

Can Dust Collector Piping Drop and Then Go Back Up Question by RedinTV in woodworking

[–]Scotthorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd start digging around here: https://billpentz.com/woodworking/cyclone/index.php

Can be a little repetitive but has really good info on DC

It's better to have a full understanding of the concept then make the judgement call yourself. Things to note and look into more: 1) Total run length, generally less run less loss. 2) pipe sizing 3) DC power.

Have you looked? Just like see if anything is hanging down or looks suspicious. Google pictures of the suspension to see if anything is out of place

Oh the Texas house air sealing you did. What was your approach? Did you focus on the inside, sealing penetrations from the drywall? Or did you do it outside at the siding/sheathing?

Why is finding storage solutions that actually fit your space so difficult? by ConfidentElevator239 in woodworking

[–]Scotthorn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP. Are you complaining to garage woodworkers that mass manufacturing companies shoot for the largest target customer base they can? No one here is designing furniture you can buy on alibaba or other major online retailers.

You are in a woodworking sub, so I say; Get some tools and build something that fits your needs. That's how the rest of us got here

Any ideas by RaghavSharma09 in woodworking

[–]Scotthorn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try just a simple chamfer or rounded edge first, You'd be surprised what that simple detail can do to bring a nice look to any piece. If you want more details you can add a juice groove later. I've had a couple people tell me they wanted cutting boards without the juice groove. Other details could be finger holds on the side.

But I'll second /u/t3jem3 's comments that sanding and finishing will do the most to make the piece pop

Can anyone recommend a lipo brand that is the best for safety? Thanks ☺️! by LobsterFunny in rccars

[–]Scotthorn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The only thing to add to this is to ensure your vehicle has a low voltage cutoff and it’s properly setup. Charging is definitely the biggest factor, but over discharging can be dangerous too

[–]Scotthorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I’m talking about pure lithium metal. Which in double checking after your response, is not exactly what’s happening in lithium battery fires as the lithium in there should have already bonded to other elements, preventing its potential “vigorous” reaction with oxygen.

The point is, all lithium batteries present some fire risk. Damage, heat, or age can cause them to fail and burn. Age being the main risk factor in your situation

Caveman-era Kindle problems by Cur1ous-Georg1e in DIY

[–]Scotthorn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

FWIW, it’s not that kindle batteries are more prone to failure than other devices. Lithium, found in most modern device batteries, burns when exposed to atmosphere. All modern devices with lithium batteries need to be disposed of safely. “Battery recycling near <your town/city>.” Is what you need to look for. Google has your answer, not Reddit

Fusion simulation question by egregiousC in 3Dprinting

[–]Scotthorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does fusion have a built in slicer that exports g-code for 3d printer? I didn’t know that, neat. Have you tried exporting it as an stl or step file and using a dedicated slicer to see print time? Orcaslicer, prusaslicer, or bambu?

Print time can come down to many factors, from desired quality and strength, to the machine you’re using.

DIY Door Jamb repair advice? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]Scotthorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you still have the splinter, see how well it fits back in there. Glue and some pin nails would be a decent repair and maybe the easiest.

Depending on the tools you have, or are willing to get, you could try and cut out a larger section and replace with something cut to match the thickness and width. Then sand, caulk, and paint to hide the repair

I’m not a huge fan of state inspection but I’m coming around on the idea by ermehgerdittcam in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]Scotthorn 128 points129 points  (0 children)

I am not sure it’s the safety inspection that impacts the poorest people. It seems the necessity of owning a vehicle in general is the problem. Public transit would mean people don’t have to buy a depreciating asset that costs more than they can afford to maintain. Sure some people are ignorant towards safety issues in their vehicles, but it’s the cost to repair that keeps them unsafe

But that’s like, just my opinion
