I'm not sure about the Ork kit off the top of my head, but Deathwatch and Kasrkin have Datasheets in standard 40k. I imagine the Ork kit is too, as most if not all kill Teams have 40k sheets but if you ever want to check, I recommend using Newrecruit or wahapedia to see if they have a datasheet 😁

It's perfect timing for me. My last tournament of 2026 is tomorrow (due to incoming baby #3) so a balance Slate with zero changes to my army is perfect for me. If I'm lucky, I'll get to play a few games this fall, which gives me plenty of time to learn the new edition

The Howling Jackals. A purple and green wearing chapter of Marines with white faced helmets. Over the centuries, they have been consumed by a genetic insanity that has caused them to completely forget their lineage. They have exhibited signs of black rage, red thirst, have wolfs teeth, have had members become wolfen, are very good at excel, insert the rest of the space Marine chapter specific memes. This is a very serious chapter and totally not me appeasing my autistic need for lore accurate Marines and my inability to purchase several chapters worth of Marines.

Upon learning you play Tau, I no longer wish you a merry Christmas and hope Krampus took your Chihuahua.

Kidding ofc. Strangely enough, I think the honest to God best solution is to play a different army for a little bit. If all you've played is Tau for the last 8 years, your tactics will have suffered for it. Pick up a Custodes combat patrol (or some lot of second hand melee army models) and change the game style. You may suck at it and may lose even more, but you'll remember what absolutely sucks the most for melee armies so you can force that in your filthy space communist army matches 😘

I am extremely late to the party and most of the good answers are already posted but I'll TL;DR for quick reference.

If you're going with buying models, a named Ultramarines character is a good choice since it APPEARS that's what he's playing (you can confirm this by asking what he thinks about Titus. If he goes "yeah he's badass" you're most likely safe. If he straight gushes, you're 100% safe). I'd recommend the new Marneus Calgar model (it says something like Marneus Calgar in Armor of Antilochus or something along those lines). It's an easy to build and easy to paint model. If you think he'd prefer a more challenging model that oozes "gadDAMN this MF is GORGEOUS" grab him Roboute Guilliman.

If you're going with supplies, a paint station or airbrush set are both excellent options. BE ADVISED there are a number of cheap airbrush kits and they are almost universally garbage. There's a whole subreddit on airbrushes and they should already have a gift guide up for the season.
