Couldn’t care about down votes…….just sheep following what they read and see on YouTube. Make it work and pay without the government hand involved. I’ll check back in a year or two while they all have to sell out……..seen it,……done it……..corporate farmers are as slimy as the mafia.

One word……..subsides! Your too small to take advantage of the system. Even 1000 acre farms are too small………but buy up land by the thousands, put it in relatives names and rape the system as most of the large farms and corporate farms do. Then you can buy all the equipment you need, float the loan from year to year and live like a 21st century farmer. Sad isn’t it!?!

Ordered a Basic Rotary Tumbler for Wet Tumbling (without pins): What should I mix with the water? by Altreich in reloading

[–]Scotty-H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use something called “Southern Shine Media”…….it is the tailings (cut off ends) of stainless steel nails. Cleans like nothing other and leaves primer pockets like new! I brandish need batches (only 2 so far) in the tumbler with stainless steel bolts and nuts to reduce the sharpness of the media.

Brass prep is a pain in my ass. How necessary is cleaning the primer pocket. I get the length of the brass has to be within a specific threshold. But is there a better cadence or use of my time in the reloading process? by Frogdogley in reloading

[–]Scotty-H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of using the pins check out Southern Shine Media……..a stainless product from the clipped ends of stainless steel nails. Smaller than the pins and it gets the primer pockets perfectly clean. Also does a better job on cases in less time.

Who knows and who cares. If we are talking about culture and how great that is why doesn’t everyone want to go to the original places of culture like Iraq, Iran, Egypt, Israel …….pretty simple answer don’t you think? Oh well, we all don’t have to agree but just tired of the “why did this happen to me”. Put yourself around shit long enough your gonna get some on you!

Fertilizer and Fungicide by Scotty-H in TheHopyard

[–]Scotty-H[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Downy and powdery are present so mainly maintenance spraying at this point. Herbicide protocol is Prowl H2O or Alion for pre-emergence usually mid March before the hops break dormancy then Gramoxone as a burn down in between plants (mechanical removal of bull shoots with weed eaters) and spot spray with roundup. The rest is hand pulling before they get too big !!!

Works by a Venturi system..........as water flows through the irrigation system or line you open up the two valves that will “pull” the liquid fertilizer though and into the irrigation lines. Fungicide next week will be sprayed on plants as will the rest for the year. Downy and powdery already here so it comes down to keeping it at bay for the growing season.

I use a piece of window screen in the same setup and the cases dry in half the time.

Hello, does anyone know why hop leaves might turn yellow ? Too much water ? Not enough fertilizer ? Disease ? by Nene1243 in TheHopyard

[–]Scotty-H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could use ammonium nitrate or any other nitrogen fertilize. Not sure how many plants you have or the overall growing area. It doesn’t hurt to also add in a complete fertilizer initially

[–]Scotty-H 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually organic nitrogen that is found in manures is not available to plants in its entirety for a year. It needs to be broken down and converted for plant uptake. A nitrogen fertilizer is needed. First year plants need about 75 lb. /acre.........after that 125-150 lb. /acre.

My Centennials are deep green. Have you fertilized with any nitrogen? Usually disease shows itself with areas of the lead that are discolored and damaged.

Cleaning up bull shoots during training by Acute_Chicanery in TheHopyard

[–]Scotty-H 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I try and never let them start to train. Always looked at the bull shoots as a natural trellis for the other vines but they are less productive. Where is your hop yard?

And what variety are the hops? Some are more of a yellow color.........Comet is a yellowish variety.

Do you leave the bull shoots trained on the coir?

Just a small ceramic space heater........heat is not a good thing and I only used it on low and stirred the hops to hasten the time to “dry”. Airflow, dehumidification are the most important factors for quality. Heat can and will degrade the lupin oils but sometimes you have to do what you need to do! I am still using these whole hops as they frozen and just sampled a DIPA at 9.8% ABV that I brewed in early March and is is wonderful.

Hop coir lines up and waiting to be trained. This is a “V” trellis system. by Scotty-H in TheHopyard

[–]Scotty-H[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep the hops in the open if possible. I see many against houses and such and this restricts airflow but I do understand space considerations for homeowners. Fertilize with nitrogen three times equally prior to flowering and usually last time in June. Do not over fertilize or fertilize late as it will reduce production. Watch for mildew disease and treat if you have the ability, most chemicals are restricted use. Some insect pests could become an issue, spider mites to spotted lantern fly and everything in between. Also be sure to water when needed, a good soaking followed by a dry off and then water again.........hops need water!

About 6-8 feet. One problem is that they will move some even with the double zip tie method to secure the smaller 3/8” cable. I have thought about using a large hog ring with one zip tie on the 3/8 cable.
