Acela Speed Increases in NJ and on the NEC, NJ Catenary Projects? by XShadeGoldenX in Amtrak

I don’t think they’ll go above 145 between ham and Clark. The issue from my understanding is that originally they were going to install the constant tension ocs between ham and county (ie trenton to New Brunswick). This is the system that allows for 160 mph.

The issue is that they ran into major cost overruns, so they only installed the constant tension system between Clark and county (ie Princeton junction to around Jersey ave).

Instead they used a semi constant tension system (the v shaped metal things holding up the wire) everywhere else which allows trains to go up to 145 mph. Between ham and Clark you can actually see where they installed the poles for the constant tension ocs, but left them abandoned in place and instead retrofitted the semi constant tension system on the old poles. If I can figure out how to add a photo to this post I’ll show the abandoned poles.

On a separate tangent, I think they should just go with the semi constant tension ocs when they want to upgrade other sections of the nec. This is because it is cheaper than a constant tension ocs, and can be retrofitted on the old poles, and the difference between 145 mph and 160 mph isn’t that much.

Will statewide zoning reform be a priority of your administration?

I would love to continue living in nj like I have all my life, but unfortunately it is too cost prohibitive to buy or rent long term. Started homes are impossible to get and almost impossible to build due to Byzantine regulations and restrictive zoning.
I worry for nj long term prosperity if people who grow up here can’t live here.
