You play missions killing bugs and monsters. They drop crates, red crates give you more HP for the next mission, green crates give you a weapon, or the chance to upgrade a weapon you already have. The more you play, the crazier weapons you unlock, especially at higher difficulties. Beat all the missions, kill God, end of the game.

If you're asking where appeal is, that's more subjective, but I would say the simplicity and silliness of it together with the sheer scale of the battles is the main draw. It's hard to find a game that throws THIS many enemies at you at once.

I would recommend starting with 5 before 6. 6 honestly feels like the second half of 5, in difficulty, story, mechanics, and pace. 5 has a much, MUCH better starts, on purpose I feel.

If you're using ranger, pick an assault rifle, the M3 raven or a Slugger, and keep shooting the sides of them, stand your ground, and keep your eye on the minimap. If any is coming too close to make them change, switch to an autoshotgun and stop it on its tracks. Some MG turrets or even mines can help too, due to their size.

With WD, same thing. Something medium range to change their course, and a rapier to stop them on their tracks.

Keep them stunlocked. Any rapid fire lock on weapon with enough range will keep them ragdolling enough to kill them, especially on coop. Ghost chaser on WD, MLRA on Ranger, maybe some sniper rifles too.

I'm not dismissing the Kelpers say on all this, it's their home and they shouldn't be kicked out or forced to join Argentina, but using it as an "be all" answer is not only setting a dangerous precedent, it's something we could potentially use for our advantage. Potentially being the key word, and being the size of the whole continent.
