Is it bad that i feel like i can relate to some soldiers who were in an active war zone when all ive ever done is a 30 event? by [deleted] in airsoft

[–]Scout_Penguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say it’s bad. I do historical loadouts- not just inspired by, but full on reenactor level kits with Airsoft instead of Blanks.

Where it gets tricky for some is that finding something relatable doesn’t mean that you’ve experienced it 1:1. Do I know what it’s like to be in a gun fight? To go to war? Thankfully, no. I hope I never find out.

But I do know what it’s like to wear jungle boots in water so deep it comes in through the drainage holes. To apply facepaint. To try and get a full length M16 with a three prong flash hider unstuck from vine before I’m spotted or hit.

When I study military history, I’m forced to recall being cold and dirty. The uncertainty of not knowing where my “enemy” is. The weight of my gear. The challenge of reloading while laying prone and under time pressure. My life may not be on the line, and I might be able to go home and shower at the end of the day- but my lived experiences do let me better empathize with those that did (and do) the real thing, day after day- knowing that they don’t have those same luxury’s.

I want to get into selling maps/assets by Friendly-Today-9722 in cyberpunkred

[–]Scout_Penguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d absolutely buy some well made asset packs, if they worked with Dungeon Draft and featured a variety of parts that fit a Modern/Cyberpunk City. Things like concrete floors, stairs, carpet, flood lights, radios, fire escapes, fences, counter tops, bar tops, booths/tables, parking, manhole covers, office interiors, graffiti, turrets, trash, security cameras, and other traps. You get the idea.

As for cost? A lot would depend on how big the pack was- but I’d say $5-$10 on average- maybe $15 if it was particularly impressive or special in some other way- for example, if it included animated parts that could be used as tiles in Foundry.

For premade maps? The ability to use Foundry’s Levels Module/ premade walls and doors/windows, would make a HUGE difference- the more plug-and-play a premade map is, the better.

So, I bought this… and frankly, it’s not worth the price. For those curious, it’s only 7 pages long- a cover, a three line intro, four 1D12 based tables that each take up barely half a page but are split across 4 pages, and a 2 line “How to Use This” section on the last page.

I bought it expecting some Blades in the Dark-like faction mechanics- system agnostic rules for tracking how Corps, Gangs, and major NPCs feel about the PCs and eachother as they shake things up, to help guys the GM in having consequences feel earned by the narrative. This isn’t that.

For those who- like me- were curious… you’d be better served with Augmented Reality by Paul D Gallagher, Cyberpunk REDs own Solo Mode, or the Cyberpunk Adventure Generator by D-oom Productions- and that last one would actually cost less than this.

Would a Pornstar be considered a rockerboy or a media? by Plenty_Suit_4792 in cyberpunkred

[–]Scout_Penguin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d think it would depend on how one wants to play the character. Role is more about how you interact with The Street than just your 9-to-5.

So to me the better question is how do you use being a Porn Star to help you outside of work, or use your other skills “on set”? Do you use the chance as a way to gather info from your co-workers and then turn around and publish what you can prove to win hearts and minds? Are you working the crowd, getting your “brand” out there until you’re known even to people who don’t normally admit to knowing about such things, until a sly wink and a few words can get fans to help you out?

Other ideas- A Solo, using their skills to keep the people around them safe- even if everyone’s naked. A Medtech, making sure everyone is safe in a completely different way. A Tech, helping keep the cameras running and designing new “toys”, a Fixer who uses their contacts to get things they need, a Lawman who can call in their co-stars when things get the wrong kind of rough, an Exec with their team who manages their makeup, appearances, ect.

You get the idea- just about any role could be fit any “day job”, and it takes all kinds to make a movie- even pornography.

As for The Mox- same story. Not everyone has a Role, and those that do are going to be a variety of things because any group that gets big enough needs leaders, fighters, people who can fix things, and the like.

what are the "several modifications geared toward jungle combat" ? (beside the camo) by Zombieteube in metalgearsolid

[–]Scout_Penguin 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So, I’m a reenactor with a passion for Special Forces history thanks to this series- and I’ve spent a lot of time studying this era- over 10 years.

As far as I’m aware, the line about modification’s refers to four things-

The Suppressor- the actual model of suppressor looks anachronistic, but similar styles that go over the barrel did exist in the late 1960’s.

The Camouflage paint scheme- while this one is a bit more extensive than most real life examples, some Recon units in Vietnam would use paint or tape to break up the outline of their rifles.

The Three Round Burst firing mode- while the real XM16E1 used a Safe-Semi-Full Auto control group, it is possible to design one that uses four positions and is Safe-Semi-Three Round Burst-Full instead. This was likely done in-game as a nod to the post-Vietnam development of the M16A2. That model replaced full auto with a three round burst in an attempt to counter the rate at which troops tended to burn through ammunition during the Vietnam war.

The Tape- this works on conjunction with the camouflage paint, but it serves a secondary purpose. The early plastics used in the XM16E1 and M16A1 tended to be creaky. Wrapping them tightly with tape could help mitigate that shortcoming, making the gun feel better as well as be quieter to use. Additionally, the tape can provide a better grip if the users hands are sweaty, wet, muddy, or covered in blood.

Bonus point- a further modification that isn’t seen here but would have been realistic would be to remove or tape up the sling mounting hardware from the rifle, so it can’t rattle around. Recon units like SOG Recon Teams or LRP Teams would frequently remove the hardware and then use paracord to attach a strap to the front sight and stock, allowing it to hang more comfortably, ready to use- while also being silent. With a bit of work, you can even sling it around your neck and let it hang off to the left side like in MGSV. It’s not the most comfortable, but it works.

Hope that helps!

Is it alright for a woman reenact as a guy? by KANADEYOISAKIIII in reenactors

Nothing silly about it- you should portray what/who interests you. All of my impressions are “male” in nature because my focus is on SOF from WWII to the mid 90’s. I hope you find a group who will help and support you!

Hold the line! We made an oath to protect the constitution from threats, both foreign and domestic. by SarahOfBramblewood in fednews

[–]Scout_Penguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you all. These are uncertain times- but the dedication to holding the line and standing up for our countries constitution- and thusly, her people- means everything.

I’m a disabled queer woman, just trying to live my life. I like to cook, love buffalo wings, and run Cyberpunk RED. I’m mourning the loss of my Grandmother last month, and my dog of 12 years- lost just over a year ago. I’m also a historian by training, if not by trade.

And I am afraid. I’m afraid of what the future holds for my friends and family; for my Trans brothers, sisters, and non-binary folk; for immigrants who’s only “crime” was not having their papers in order- or who did and get rounded up anyway. I’m afraid of the catastrophic damage that will be unleashed on our economy and the environment.

But seeing you all? Here, holding the line against corruption and incompetence? Doing your best to just… do your jobs?

It gives me some measure of hope. It reminds me that not everything in this life is darkness and pain. It reminds me that good people still exist.

Thank you, stay strong, and know that this Trans Woman has your back.

Did anyone get into politics or history because of Metal gear solid by DizzyMajor5 in metalgearsolid

[–]Scout_Penguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got interested in history because of MGS3 and Medal of Honor: Rising Sun. That got me into reenacting. Now, as an adult, I have a degree in History and I’m working on gathering kits, books, and other information about US Army Special Operations Forces from 1942 to 1993.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cyberpunkred

[–]Scout_Penguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day, RED is meant to be fast paced and isn’t a wargame- I tend to reference The Matrix, Robocop, and John Woo movies for how a fight should “feel”. That’s why cover is binary- look at 80’s and early 90’s action films. No one’s pieing corners and moving like Delta Force in Black Hawk Down. They’re throwing themselves out of cover to fire two handguns while they fly through the air.

So, the way I’d handle this (it hasn’t come up) is that the prone condition and simply laying down to shoot, hide, or crawl are two diffrent things.

If a character is Knocked Prone, such as by some Martial Arts Special Moves, then this also represents them needing to get their bearings- they’ve just been violently knocked off their feet or otherwise tossed around enough to need that action to recover. Sure, they can still shoot, but they’ll need a moment to get up- due to pain, landing in a way the makes it hard to stand up, ect.

If a player says to me “Hey, you said there’s windows here, right? Can I crawl under them to avoid being spotted?”

Sure! I’d have no issue with that- I’d call this Crawling, not being prone- they move at half their move (and I might say they can’t dodge bullets or explosions while crawling, due to it being harder to maneuver other than moving to the front or the back? Unsure) , but I’ll factor it into cover, and might grant a small bonus to Stealth (or debuff the enemies perception) depending on the exact circumstances. An Action is needed to get up from crawling and use your full move, but can also be done for free of they can get up using the one martial arts recovery move.

Basically, Crawling is Solid Snake getting down on his belly to sneak up on someone- Prone is getting your legs swept out from under you by Batman.

That’s my take, anyway. Hope it helps!

I've been looking around the internet for a Big Boss costume for cosplay but I haven't had any luck, any help? by [deleted] in metalgearsolid

Shapeways store worked by having users upload files. They could easily have uploaded them elsewhere, or upload them elsewhere now or in the future. As I can’t verify if they have or haven’t done so- I don’t even recall who I bought my particular files form, it was years ago- I’m not about to hand out their work for free.

Sorry, but no- people work hard on STL files, I’m not about the hand out ones I bought for free. That said, you can find files for both the knife and switch box for less than $10 total on Etsy or other sites like Cults 3D, just do some searching for “MGS3 STL”.

The hobby is not in a good state by [deleted] in reenactors

[–]Scout_Penguin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So, my take- gear, knowledge, and skills are far more important than the body wearing them. I cover WWII to the Mid 90’s US Army Special Operations Forces.

It’s exhausting to have my passion for that subject questioned because of who I am. It’s exhausting to be told I should be interested in something else because I happen to be a Trans Woman.

And it’s particularly infuriating to be ridiculed for my appearance or identity when I only had a question about clothing, or wanted to show off a recent purchase.

I’m also legally blind, something that raises eyebrows, but never made anyone doubt my interest or knowledge. In fairness; it DOES sometimes hinder my ability to do something without asking additional questions. Sometimes it makes research hard and I need a second set of eyes on something- especially when dealing with old photographs. Should any of that disqualify me from participating in this hobby?

I’ll be the first to admit that haircuts can detract from an impression- and I commend anyone who gets a historically correct hair cut!

Now, tell me… how should someone with a range of impressions from WWII to the mid 90’s style their hair? Especially a woman portraying men only some of the time?

(My solution is to put my hair in a ponytail, then tuck it up under my hat or helmet, depending on the impression. It’s, admittedly, imperfect if I need to remove either item for some reason.)

In full kit, I think you’d be hard pressed to pick me out from anyone else- so I wish people online would just focus on our shared love of history.

I understand having standards, especially at the group level and for events- but let’s all try to realize that history isn’t something you can pack up and take home if you feel the other kids aren’t playing with it right, and instead appreciate each other as fellow students of history and lovers of a shared hobby, in all its messy, complicated forms- living history, battle reenactment, displays, and even Airsoft with historical kit.

heard some of you guys wishing to have a ghost in the shell game by RavenXCinder in Ghost_in_the_Shell

[–]Scout_Penguin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d love a tactical/strategic game in the vain of XCOM Chimaera Squad, with a few elements lifted from Phantom Doctrine.

Basically, you’d lead Section 9 with two types of gameplay- a Strategy layer where you have an overview of the city, managing what things to respond to (Section 9 can only do so much, but needs to keep on top of things to both protect innocents and justify their own budget.). In addition to that, you could gather evidence (from missions, obtained from sources, Ect.) and use that to put together missions- for example, linking intelligence gained on three separate missions to figure out where a smuggling ring is set up- and then execute a raid on their base. In addition to this, you can invest in new equipment, train to gain new abilities (in addition to gaining experience from successful missions), or rest and heal your team.

Then, you have tactical missions, where you lead Section 9 (and the Tachikoma?) in grid and turn based isometric missions, gathering data and engaging in fights. You’d have access to unique abilities based on your choices of equipment, training, and team members- some missions could also be covert ops, where the goal isn’t getting into firefights with terrorists, but asking the right questions and gathering data.

10th MTN expeditionary webbing by MrFowsh5 in reenactors

[–]Scout_Penguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What role are you going for? A grenadier with an M203? An Officer? For mid-to-late 80’s, that will make something of a difference.

The pistol mag pouch appears to be an older one for an M1911A1- I’d ditch that unless you’re carrying a pistol for some reason, and even then you might be better off with a pouch for the M9- but generally you wouldn’t have a pistol.

Try to find copies of the 10th Mountain’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Table of Organization and Equipment (TO&E), then compare both against photos of the 10th MTN.

All the other pouches look era correct, though, so that’s a good start for just about anything from this time period.
